This paper proposes two modeling approaches to predict lung tumor dynamics as an effect of radiotherapy. Real clinical information of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients undergoing stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) as the primary treatment method has been used for numerical simulations. The classical Gompertz model for tumor volume growth prediction was modified using a fractional parameter and combined with the linear-quadratic model to foresee the effect of SBRT on the targeted tumor. Another approach was implemented by following a pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PKPD) minimal compartmental model for single therapy with SBRT. Statistical analysis has been carried out to compare the two models. In terms of tumor growth prediction, obtained results indicated a decrease in the total tumor volume for both modeling approaches. A striking observation to emerge from the data comparison is the interesting perspective of fractional tools for further exploration in modeling tumor growth. Copyright (C) 2021 The Authors.

This paper describes the development of PlatypOUs - an open-source electromyography (EMG)-controlled mobile robot platform that uses the MindRove Brain Computer Interface (BCI) headset as signal acquisition unit, implementing remote control. Simultaneously with the physical mobile robot, simulation environment is also prepared using Gazebo, within the Robot Operating System (ROS) framework, with the same capabilities as the physical device, from the point of view of the ROS. The purpose of the PlatypOUs project is to create a tool for STEM-based education, and it involves two major disciplines: mobile robotics and machine learning, with several sub-areas included in each. The use of the platform and the simulation environment exposes students to hands-on laboratory sessions, which contribute to their progression as engineers. An important feature of our project is that the platform is made up of open-source and easily available commercial hardware and software components. In this paper, an electromyography (EMG) based controller has been developed using support vector machine (SVM) bed classification for robot control purposes. Copyright (C) 2021 This is Authors.

Many single- and multi-phase fluid dynamical systems are governed by non-linear evolutionary equations. A key aspect of these systems is that the fluid typically flows across spatially and temporally varying cross-sections. We, first, show that not any choice of state-variables may be apt for obtaining a port-Hamiltonian realization under spatially varying cross-section. We propose a modified choice of the state-variables and then represent fluid dynamical systems in port-Hamiltonian representations. We define these port-Hamiltonian representations under spatial variation in the cross-section with respect to a new proposed state-dependent and extended Stokes-Dirac structure. Finally, we account for temporal variations in the cross-section and obtain a suitable structure that respects key properties, such as, for instance, the property of dissipation inequality. Manufacturing industry is seeing an explosion in data availability, with potential for desired optimisation of productive systems. For instance, additive manufacturing is a novel technology that is currently advancing fast and constantly. As the physics of additive manufacturing are complex there are cases where it is of interest to monitor the process, and further to this, a potential objective is to optimize process parameters. Analytics and decision support technologies can support optimisation from data and expert knowledge. We present current status of analytics methodologies, which have not been updated in years. Also, we introduce an additive manufacturing process, laser cladding. From this context, this paper presents a methodology proposal, and further to this, applicability in a laser cladding scenario. A set of experiments is performed and quality of results, both in terms of porosity and dimensionality, assessed. A study of correlation is centred on data analysis for extracting relationships among the process data and process parameters with respect to the quality of the test outcome. As a result, in our study porosity showed up as the hardest to generate and to model of the two quality indicators studied, with the model attaining modest results, while results for dimensionality were better, and various variables showed importance for correlations. Introduction: Current practice in coaching track cycling sprint athletes is a focus on a very narrow band of power output from 1-4 seconds. However, there is a small oxidative contribution to sprint performance as short as 10-s, and this contribution increases as a rider competes in multiple events. All Olympic track cycling events demand repeated sprint performance! Purpose: This study models sprint-cycling performance to investigate the role of durations requiring a high oxidative contribution to energy supply and their relationship to sprint-cycling power durations. It hypothesizes power at endurance durations are strongly related to power at sprint durations, and further, these relationships may be nonlinear and saturable. Methods: Power meter data was used from 89 participants (192 datasets) to model fit the data using 4 different models (exponential, linear, parabolic, and power) using total least-squares. All data was based on a (0,0) start point acknowledging neither glycolytic or oxidative pathways operate independently. Dependent variables were 15 and 30 second power, and predictor variables 2, 8 and 20 minute power. Results: All four models yielded high r2 values (r2 > 0.81), and the exponential and linear models in particular. Strong correlations for all models demonstrates the role of oxidative power duration on performance over short durations. The linear model was the best model based on consistent, high r2 values and model simplicity, validating the first hypothesis, but nullifying the second. Conclusion: The results show maximal performance in sprint-cycling durations of 15 and 30 seconds are strongly related to maximal performance in 2, 8, and 20 minute power, and training at these durations does not diminish performance, and with a season, training maximally at these durations complements performance. One of the most difficult challenges in cancer therapy is the emergence of drug resistance within tumors. Sometimes drug resistance can emerge as the result of mutations and Darwinian selection. However, recently another phenomenon has been discovered, in which tumor cells switch back and forth between drug-sensitive and pre-resistant states. Upon exposure to the drug, sensitive cells die off, and pre-resistant cells become locked in to a state of permanent drug resistance. In this paper, we explore the implications of this transient state switching for therapy scheduling. We propose a model to describe the phenomenon and estimate parameters from experimental melanoma data. We then compare the performance of continuous and alternating drug schedules, and use sensitivity analysis to explore how different conditions affect the efficacy of each schedule. We find that for our estimated parameters, a continuous therapy schedule is optimal. However we also find that an alternating schedule can be optimal for other hypothetical parameter sets, depending on the difference in growth rate between pre-drug and post-drug cells, the delay between exposure to the drug and emergence of resistance, and the rates of switching between states. The increased demand for highly customized products and the need for shortening lead times for competitive advantage has also affected the automotive industry. Companies that handle markets in a multi-faced network of demand, like Europe, need to be flexible, responsive, and follow a customer-focused policy. Therefore, there is an increased need for automated solutions not only in product design but also in the manufacturing section. Such solutions need to replace manual effort increasing efficiency and creating new horizons of innovation and development. In this paper, a mathematical model based on Goal Programming modeling has been introduced as a part of a more flexible and automated perspective for production scheduling. The model is applied to a production scheduling process of an automotive company headquartered in Germany to handle a multi-objective problem that manual effort cannot. The paper will explain how demand management, lead time shortening, and process efficiency can be solved through a mathematical model properly modified to its cause. Copyright (C) 2021 The Authors.

Photothermal therapy has emerged as a potential modality to generate hyperthermia as cancer treatment due to its low invasiveness and its capacity to complement other cancer therapies. Undesired side effects can occur such as damage to surrounding healthy tissue and temperature increase to values that cause tissue carbonization and evaporation. For this reason, this research aims to develop a multivariable fuzzy logic controller that maximizes tumor thermal damage while keeping temperature within the recommended ranges and minimizing neighboring healthy tissue damage. Three inputs were contemplated for the control system: tumor thermal damage, future maximum temperature error and future healthy tissue temperature error; thirteen logic rules were used to determine the controller output, which was established to be the change in laser power. Results showed that the control algorithm successfully accomplished the proposed goals.

The article investigates a microstrip line (MSL) with two side grounded conductors having rectangular and rounded shapes of conductors. Each shape of conductors was simulated in the TALGAT system, and the values of the per-unit-Iength capacitance of the line $(C)$ and the per-unit-Iength capacitance of the line in vacuum $(C_modelling)$ were calculated. The results demonstrated good convergence when the thicknesses of conductors were $t=18,35,70$ , and $105\mu\mathrm{m}$ for two shapes of conductors. The results obtained did not confirm the lower computational costs with rounded conductors, compared with rectangular ones, and important causes of this were revealed. In the meantime, it was found that the rounding has a considerable influence on secondary characteristics. For example, when thickness increases, the difference of per-unit-length delays rises from 1.58% to 2.56%, while the difference of wave impedance rises from 2.14% to 4.67%. Moreover, we also considered an important case of grounding the side conductors at the ends rather than along the central conductor. This case allows this MSL to be used as a modal filter (MF) for protection against ultrashort pulses based on their modal decomposition into two lower amplitude pulses. In this case, with rounded conductors, the difference of per-unit-length modal delays decreases up to 8.25%. It decreases the duration of USPs that will be completely decomposed in MF and, therefore, deteriorates the protection. Thus, accurate modelling of the conductor shape can be critical for simulating such protective devices.

Glycemic control (GC) has improved outcomes for intensive care unit (ICU) patients. However, the increased risk of hypoglycemia and glycemic variability due to inter- and intra- patient variability make safe, effective GC difficult. Stochastic TARgeted (STAR) GC framework is a unique, patient-specific, risk-based dosing protocol directly accounting for both inter- and intra- patient variability using a stochastic model of future patient variability. A new tri-variate (3D) stochastic model, developed and validated in virtual trials to provide more accurate future predictions of insulin sensitivity (SI), is clinically evaluated. STAR-3D was implemented as standard care at the Christchurch Hospital ICU, New Zealand, between April 2019 and January 2021. In total, 567 patients (33276 hours) were treated. The overall median [IQR] BG achieved was 6.7 [6.0 7.8] mmol/L with 76% BG in the 4.4-8.0 mmol/L target band. Importantly, there were only 0.3% BG < 4.0 mmol/L (mild hypoglycemia) and no incidence of severe hypoglycemia (BG < 2.2 mmol/L). These outcomes were achieved with median [IQR] 4.0 [2.0 6.0] U/h insulin and median [IQR] nutrition delivery of 99 [80 100]% goal feed (GF). Similar safety and performance BG outcomes were obtained at a per-patient level, suggesting STAR-3D successfully provided safe, effective control for all patients, regardless of patient condition. Compared to the original version of STAR, STAR-3D provided improved safety and efficacy, while achieving higher nutrition delivery. The new 3D stochastic model in STAR-3D provided higher safety and efficacy for all patients in this large clinical trial, despite using higher insulin rates than its predecessor to provide greater nutrition delivery. STAR-3D thus better captured patient-specific condition and variability to provide improved GC outcomes. Copyright (C) 2021 The Authors.
