This paper presents a control architecture suitable for autotrophic cultivations in a stirred tank reactor feeding a gas mixture of H2/CO2/O2. Based on the employed multi-layer structure, for simple gas phase control no metabolic information of the strain is required. A MIMO-PI controller connected to an adaptive feedforward disturbance rejection based on a physical model allows for a gas phase feedback control. Thus, without further knowledge of the autotrophic strain, experiments can be run to generate data and develop a process model including strain specific biological details. Combining both layers, gas phase control and feeding trajectory optimization with the process model, results in a control architecture that is suitable for optimizing the process in a closed-loop. The model for perception of the preview target trajectory is being proposed. The model is a weighted sum of the slopes of the preview target trajectory elements. A procedure for the selection of the weighting coefficients as well as other pilot adaptation parameters is proposed. The results of the mathematical modelling of the pilot-aircraft system corresponding to the preview tracking and ground based simulation are compared. Copyright (C) 2019. The Authors. Lithium-ion batteries are ubiquitous in modern society. Their high power and energy density compared to other forms of electrochemical energy storage make them very popular in a wide range of applications [1]. To ensure safe, prolonged, and reliable operations, significant research effort has been put into understanding, modelling, and predicting the key limiting phenomena, which has led to various battery models with different levels of complexity and prediction capabilities [2]. This work focuses on implementing the pseudo-two-dimensional (P2D) model, the most widely accepted electrochemical model on lithium-ion batteries. The unparalleled prediction abilities of the P2D model, however, are over shadowed by its high complexity. Thus, much of this work focuses on model reduction to shorten effective simulation time. In the end, four model reductions have been identified and successfully implemented. Comparisons to the full model at 1C, 2C and 5C discharge rates are reported. We introduce a new robust stability measure for retarded type systems, which is called smoothed spectral abscissa. The main characteristics of the smoothed spectral abscissa are that it is smooth with respect to the system parameters, and it provides a trade-off between the spectral abscissa and the H-2 norm of a transfer matrix related with the system. It is given by an implicit relation with the H-2 norm of an auxiliary system, and its computation is based on the delay Lyapunov matrix. We show that these features make the smoothed spectral abscissa suitable for the design of robust controllers by using standard gradient-based optimization techniques. Copyright (C) 2019. Artificial pancreas control is an important research area in the biomedical field. However, it is dangerous to test new control algorithms on humans in order to improve the performance of the control system. This paper presents the results of using an open-source low-cost hardware in the loop platform to test different control strategies for artificial pancreas research. An Arduino platform was selected as the main device to implement the real time differential equations solver needed for the HIL simulation. The platform was successfully tested with both a PID controller and an LQR controller. The code and schematics of the platform are available upon request. The integration of Industry 4.0 technologies must consider the place of the operator in the production. In this paper, we adopt a human-machine cooperation perspective for modelling operator 4.0 in industrial systems. Our approach is supported by Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA) method. We used three phases of the CWA: Work Domain Analysis (WDA), control Task Analysis (ConTA), and Social Organization and Cooperation Analysis (SOCA), to model the functional and cognitive constraints as well as the function allocation. The paper especially uses two modeling tools - Abstraction Hierarchy and Decision Ladder that could support the positioning and the design of Technology 4.0-based assistance systems. This model is applied to the specific activity of orders picking. This activity integrates both function of planning and organization of the different production lots and these functions can be shared between order picker 4.0 and specific Industry 4.0 technologies. Scaling of motion and forces has always been of high relevance in teleoperation setups since it allows the adaptation of workspaces of master and slave devices or to increase precision. Teleoperation setups are often affected by a delay in the communication channel. Most state of the art control approaches that guarantee stability despite delay are based on the passivity criterion which is highly restrictive to standard scaling methods. This paper proposes different time domain control concepts that regulate the motion or force scaling based on the energy flow in delayed teleoperation systems. The approach focuses on setups with motion down-scaling and is applicable to variable motion and impedance scaling. The scaling control is integrated in a state of the art time delay control concept and its performance is analyzed in experiments. Copyright (C) 2019. The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Biotechnological processes are urged to become more flexible and sustainable in order to meet the challenges of modern society. Using renewable feed stocks for the production of value added products is one strategy to achieve sustainability. The challenges arising from the use of renewables are large compared to the commonly used resources. The concentration of nutrients in renewable feed stocks varies between batches and is not optimal in respect to the demands of the cells. The biological system adapts to this situation by changing the metabolic growth modes in dependence of the availability of nutrients in the media. Consequently, the process can run through multiple modes. Each switch of the mode results in a change of the system dynamics which effects the process performance. To overcome the challenges, we propose a model predictive control approach combined with a moving horizon estimator that takes directly the multi-mode nature of the process into account. It ensures optimal performance while guaranteeing that the constraints are met in each phase of the process. Cyclic calcium release and uptake in heart cells has an important role in heart rhythm and contraction, and it is known that the malregulation of calcium release is a predictor for cardiac arrhythmia. A model of this calcium release process was proposed, which consists of a large number of discrete calcium release sites, each involving stiff, stochastic, and non-linear systems. In this paper we have developed a simulation of this calcium release model, which is parallel across the problem. The simulation is developed in a CUDA framework to be solved using GPUs. Computational efficiency is enhanced by using a DIIRK solver and taking advantage of the sparsity of the Jacobian. The output is shown to display behaviour similar to empirical observations, in particular displaying behaviour known as calcium waves. In this paper, we consider the issue of synthesizing optimal control of nonlinear dynamic systems in case of a problem with an unspecified time of the transition process. To solve this problem, an algorithmic method for constructing a suboptimal control is suggested. The basis of this method is the behavior of the Hamiltonian on the optimal trajectory, which corresponds to the required condition of the optimal system. For the synthesis of suboptimal control, the original nonlinear model is replaced by an equivalent model with a linear structure with state-dependent parameters. The use of the quadratic quality functional allows to make the transition from solving the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation to the Riccati-type equation with state-dependent parameters. A computer simulation of a simple nonlinear system, for which the Riccati equation with state-dependent parameters can be solved, has been carried out. Also, for this system a suboptimal control was created with the use of a new algorithmic parametric optimization method. The simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the method. In addition, the constructed suboptimal control is close to the control obtained by solving the Riccati equation. Copyright (C) 2019. The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
