This paper investigates the fault-tolerant safe control problem in water network systems in the presence of process and actuator faults. Firstly, based on the established watersafe benchmark, the studied water network is modeled as an interconnected switched system, and a fault-tolerant regulation problem is proposed while ensuring the states of the system remain within safe regions. Secondly, based on the stability theories for interconnected and switched systems, considering the worst cases of leakage and pump faults, a proper state-dependent safety-guaranteed switching law and distributed control policies are designed. Thirdly, the stability and safety of the proposed approach are proved in theory. Finally, simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach on a benchmark water transport system. Copyright (c) 2024 The Authors. We introduce a method for assessing cardiac mechanical efficiency via a porcine ex situ biventricular working heart model, designed to closely replicate physiological conditions and improve the evaluation of donor heart viability for transplantation. The method aims to provide decision support for the safe utilization of hearts that might otherwise be discarded. Quantifying the heart's pumping work against its chemical energy yield, our model advances traditional assessments by incorporating dynamic flow impedances to simulate real-world cardiac loads. We calculate mechanical efficiency by measuring aortic pressure, cardiac output, coronary flow, and blood-gas parameters in six porcine hearts beating in isolation, outside of the body, against computer-controlled dynamic flow impedances. The observed mean mechanical efficiency was 8.0 +/- 0.8 % (standard error of the mean), below the physiological norm of 25 %. This discrepancy underscores the influence of ex situ conditions on heart performance, as well as the limitations of standard estimation methods. Impacts of the ex situ setup as well as estimation improvements are discussed. Future research will explore integrating imaging technologies (MRI) to refine mechanical efficiency assessment. This paper introduces the use of internal variables, estimated through Model Predictive control (MPC), for fault detection and diagnosis in process industries. To do so, a data-driven methodology is proposed. Three reconstruction techniques - Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Kernel Independent Component Analysis (KICA), and Autoencoder (AE) - are compared using data sets that combine plant measurements with internal variables. The methodology was tested on a hot-dip galvanizing line dedicated to the production of automotive steel and compared to the use of only plant measurements for the development of the reconstruction methods. The results showed that the incorporation of internal variables significantly enhances the overall fault detection rate. Finally, contribution plots were used to identify the faulty sensor. In this work, the solution of the intelligent monitoring and optimal control of a real-world Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system is presented with its cloud-edge implementation. The main contribution and novelty of this work are three-fold: (1) an improved just-in-time-learning aided canonical correlation analysis (JITL-CCA) based health monitoring method is proposed;(2) a hybrid particle swarm-based optimization control method to improve the energy efficiency of HVAC systems is proposed;(3) a cloud-edge platform is developed for its implementation. Particularly, this platform allows online verifying and implementing the monitoring and optimal control methods of real HVAC systems via Internet, which is significantly different from the simulation-based and the test rig-based verification ways. This paper investigates a digital signature-based attack detection approach and applies it to a DC motor control system. For this purpose, the elliptic curves digital signature algorithm (ECDSA) is selected, as it can achieve a high level of security while using fewer bits than other digital signature approaches like Rivest-Shamir-Adleman (RSA) or discrete logarithm (DL). The curve SECP 256k1 can be used together with the Hash Function SHA-3 to obtain an output of 256 bits, ensuring collision security of 128 bits. The approach is validated by considering different scenarios in the DC motor control system during normal operation and under an attack. The proposed approach successfully detects the attack and activates the corresponding countermeasure. Copyright (C) 2024 The Authors. This study provides a solution for robust and early detection of Oscillatory Failure Cases in aircraft control surface servo loops. Extending the results from literature, an improved model-based monitoring approach based on a nonlinear actuator model is presented including novel band-pass filters, sliding windows, and an enhanced signal processing method for faster detection of high-frequency OFC. To specifically cope with the effects of actuator model uncertainties, filter time delay, and noise, an integrated method combining model-based and data-driven methods employing neural networks, distance-complexity correlation, and information entropy is proposed. Verification of this novel scheme is carried out using an industrial benchmark provided by Airbus. The promising results indicate that the proposed scheme is able to detect any OFC ensuring a very low false alarm rate, even in the presence of uncertainties. Copyright (c) 2024 The Authors.

We consider the problem of identification of time-varying, and nonlinear systems from measurements of its inputs and outputs over a chosen time frame. We present the rational maps in the time, frequency, and correlation domain as an effective way of identifying such systems. As we show, their use leads to computationally efficient algorithms while providing great flexibility in capturing complex phenomena. Copyright (C) 2024 The Authors. control systems regulate industrial processes by processing input signals to generate corresponding output signals. The monitoring of control systems ensures process safety. For control systems, we have the following recognition: the future outputs are determined by the output states and input excitations at the past moments, which have different interpretability capacities. It is a significant challenge to decouple the intricate relationship between inputs and outputs to provide comprehensive and interpretable monitoring results for control systems. In this paper, we propose a synergetic decomposition variational information bottleneck (SDVIB) approach to solve this problem from the perspective of information theory. Firstly, a compressed representation strategy is proposed to extract interpretable features from the output and input separately by employing the information bottleneck principle, which can provide initial state information and excitation information, respectively. Secondly, a reconstruction model is established within the framework of variational autoencoder (VAE), which can decouple the remaining interpretable-unrelated features to describe the cross-correlation separately among the input and output variables. In this way, the relationships between input and output variables are decoupled into multiple subspaces with specific physical meanings, which can be described by the constructed monitoring statistics. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through a well-known benchmark process. Copyright (c) 2024 The Authors. Overtaking on two-lane undivided highways poses complex challenges, with attention traditionally focused on the overtaking vehicle. Yet, slow-moving vehicle (impeder) behaviour has been largely overlooked. This study investigates the yielding process whereby impeders actively support overtaking vehicles. This phenomenon can have implications for safety in autonomous environments and optimising traffic control strategies. Empirical data, including drone-captured trajectories, were analyzed to develop predictive models for yielding behaviour. Prediction accuracies up to 82% and 85% for speed and space yielding were achieved, respectively. Integrating these models into microsimulation tools can supplement policy decisions, optimize traffic flow, and mitigate accidents, yielding significant societal benefits. Maintaining optimal skin temperature for premature infants in incubators is crucial. This work proposes a novel contactless skin servo control approach using infrared thermography (IRT), eliminating the need for intrusive sensors. An experimental test bench evaluated the control strategy under simulated disturbances, demonstrating its effectiveness in maintaining desired skin temperature. The results suggest the potential of IRT-based control for comfortable and reliable temperature management in neonatal care. Further research is needed to refine the system and validate its clinical applicability. Copyright (C) 2024 The Authors.
