This year, the ifip working conference on distributed and parallel embedded Sys tems (dipes 2008) is held as part of the ifip World Computer Congress, held in Milan on September 7 10, 2008. The embedded systems world has a great deal of experience with parallel and distributed computing. Many embedded computing systems require the high performance that can be delivered by parallel computing. parallel and distributed computing are often the only ways to deliver adequate real time performance at low power levels. This year’s conference attracted 30 submissions, of which 21 were accepted. Prof. Jor ¨ g Henkel of the University of Karlsruhe graciously contributed a keynote address on embedded computing and reliability. We would like to thank all of the program committee members for their diligence. A Petri net based approach for modeling dynamically modifiable embedded realtime systems is presented. The presented work contributes to the extension of a Petri net based design methodology for distributed embedded systems towards the handling of dynamically modifiable systems. Extensions to the underlying high-level Petri net model are introduced that allow for dynamic modifications of a net at run time. © 2004 Springer Science + Business Media, Inc.

embedded systems envelopment are currently being challenged to provide global solutions that reconcile three conflicting agendas: enrichment/refinement of system functionalities, reduction of time-to-market and production costs, and compliance with nonfunctional requirements. Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) can help development master these complexities by both separating concerns and systematically automating the production, integration and validation process. This paper draws on the Accord|UML research project to illustrate the benefits of model-driven engineering for embedded real time systems development. © 2006 by International Federation for Information Processing.

The conference, int- duced in a separate preface by the Chairs, covers a range of topics from specification and design of embedded systems through to dependability and fault tolerance. rd The second part of the book contains the proceedings of BICC 2010, the 3 ifip conference on Biologically-Inspired Collaborative Computing. The conference is concerned with emerging techniques from research areas such as organic computing, autonomic computing and self-adaptive systems, where inspiraton for techniques - rives from exhibited behaviour in nature and biology. Such techniques require the use of research developed by the dipes community in supporting collaboration over multiple systems. We hope that the combination of the two proceedings will add value for the reader and advance our related work.

This paper compares different high-level modeling approaches for real-time embedded systems design: an object-oriented approach using UML diagrams against the block diagram approach provided by Simulink. This investigates the facilities provided by both approaches for expressing system requirements and functional specification. Register files (RF) are known to consume about 20% of the power inside a processor. embedded systems, due to area and timing constraints, generally have small register files, which can cause significant register pressure. This work explores how having a map-table or a map-vector can decrease the power dissipation in the processor. The distribution of register writes and sharing of commonly occurring values such as '0' is investigated. It is shown that systems with small register files obtain a greater power reduction than larger register files when these sharing structures are used. Finally, the proposed power model comes within 95% accuracy when compared using benchmarks on a synthesized Verilog softcore processor. © 2008 by International Federation for Information Processing.

This paper proposes a new communication primitive for distributed embedded control systems: the pulsed data stream. A pulsed data stream is a time-triggered cyclic unidirectional data stream that is transmitted for a short duration at a defined phase of every cycle of a periodic control system. Since the duration of a cycle and the phase and duration of the transmission within each cycle are known a priori, the transmission of pulsed data-streams can be scheduled by the network ahead of their activation in order to minimize the end-to-end latency that is provided to an application. This paper introduces the concept of a pulsed data stream, presents a number of practical examples that demonstrate the utility of pulsed data streams in distributed monitoring and control applications and hints at implementation issues of pulsed data streams in local and wide-area networks. © 2006 by International Federation for Information Processing.

The paper presents a new type of system architecture for distributed embedded systems, whereby a system is composed from embedded actors that communicate transparently by exchanging labeled messages (signals), independent of their allocation onto network nodes. Signals are exchanged at precisely specified time instants in accordance with the concept of Timed Multitasking, whereby actors can be viewed as real-time tasks with event-triggered input and output drivers activated by timing or external events. The combination of actors, signal-based communication and timed multitasking has resulted in a new operational model - distributed Timed Multitasking (DTM). The latter has been used to derive a task execution model and requirements specifications for a real-time kernel, which have been used to develop the timed-multitasking version of the HARTEX kernel. In this context, the paper presents a discussion of specific implementation issues related to the execution of periodic and sporadic tasks under DTM. © 2006 by International Federation for Information Processing.
