In fluid power systems, the presence of undissolved air greatly influences the properties of the liquid-gas mixture. Even marginal amounts of undissolved air may drastically reduce the apparent bulk modulus of the mixture. In current state-of-the-art 1D simulation tools, the estimation of the apparent bulk modulus of the mixture is based on the assumption that both liquid and gas fractions act as springs. However, the so-called RayleighPlesset equation frequently used for cavitation analysis shows that the gas bubbles should rather be regarded as non-linear mass-spring-damper systems, implicating a frequencydependent stiffness of the gas phase. In the present paper, these dynamic effects are investigated by considering monodisperse as well as polydisperse mixtures. For the polydisperse case, a log-normal bubble size distribution is used. First, a frequency domain solution for the bubble dynamics is developed by linearizing the Rayleigh-Plesset equation. An expression of the mixture bulk modulus is derived, which is complex-valued and frequency-dependent. Based on the bulk modulus, a theoretical solution for the dynamics of a whole pipeline is developed by utilizing transmission line theory. It is shown that the dynamics of the bubbles leads to a significant shift of the system's natural frequencies towards lower values - a phenomenon that needs to be accounted for during the design phase of afluid power system. After the development of this analytical solution, by introducing a bubble dynamics source term, an established numerical scheme for 1D pipe simulation based on the method of characteristics is expanded. Finally, the newly developed numerical approach is compared with the analytical solution in order to determine its accuracy. The findings and simulation approaches in this work will enable fluid power system engineers to predict dynamic system behavior more precisely during early stages of system layout.

The system frequency response model (SFR) has been widely adopted in power grid dynamics analysis for describing the average frequency response of all elements in a power network. It is a challenging problem to accurately calibrate the parameters of the SFR model for a real bulk power grid. This paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based approach for adaptive SFR model parameter calibration. The frequency responses of bulk power systems under multiple contingencies are considered. Detailed parameter selection, architecture design, key component definition, and environment setup associated with the DRL implementation are analyzed and illustrated. The proposed DRL method for SFR parameter calibration is verified using a real bulk power system with thousands of buses in China considering the faults of ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) lines. It is shown that the proposed method can optimize the SFR model parameters efficiently and accurately.

Grid-forming converters have recently been gaining more interest as a viable alternative to replace bulk synchronous generation for supporting and sustaining medium to low voltage grids. While the ability of grid-connected converters to support bulk generation has been thoroughly investigated, the capacity and behavior of converters that would replace bulk generation are not well defined. In an inverter-dominated system with one or more grid-forming inverters, maintaining dc-link stability is equally, if not more, important as maintaining frequency stability. To this end, and to better understand the behavior of grid-forming converters with different types of controllers, this paper derives the small-signal models for converters with nested and single-loop control structures, and compares their input and output impedance characteristics with and without synchronization. The analysis of input impedance provides insight into the impact of each grid-forming converter controller on upstream (dc) elements such as the dc-link and non-stiff dc sources, while the analysis of output impedance provides insight into the interaction of the controller with downstream (ac) elements of the grid such as the line impedance and loads. The analytical results are verified using simulation and experimental measurements.

In fluid power systems, performance as well as system dynamics are strongly influenced by the presence of bubbles especially for low system pressures. While the static effect of dissolved air (especially the volume fraction of dissolved air) on the bulk modulus has been extensively investigated in the past, in hydraulics, the dynamic effects due to bubble dynamics have been neglected entirely. Thereby, the dynamic characteristics of the bubbles influence the compressibility of the disperse fluid and, as a consequence, the speed of sound in the mixture and the hydraulic system as a whole. In order to account for the bubble behavior in hydraulic simulation models, the present paper investigates a method for coupling bubble dynamics equations, such as the Gilmore or the Rayleigh-Plesset equation, with the fluid dynamic equations and their subsequent solution using the method of characteristics. Regarding the modeling, special attention is put on the distributed bubble nuclei sizes, since bubbles of the exact same size are unnatural and cannot be observed in reality. Since a dilute mixture - i.e. a small void fraction - is assumed, bubble-bubble interaction is neglected in this study. To account for the polydispersity, a discretized lognormal distribution for equilibrium bubble sizes is considered. In order to evaluate the discretization interval needed, case studies of different numbers of bubble size classes are presented and their results evaluated. Thereby, the question about the least required numbers of homogeneous bubble clusters shall be answered, as to reduce the computational effort that is needed. Using the method described in this paper, the profound effect of the bubble dynamics and the bubble size distribution on the fluid system dynamics is elaborated.

We studied cavitating flow over the suction side of a symmetric 2D foil - a scaled-down model of high-pressure hydroturbine guide vanes (GV) - in different cavitation regimes at several attack angles. High-speed imaging was used to analyze spatial patterns and time dynamics of the gas-vapor cavities, as well as for evaluating the characteristic integral parameters. A hydroacoustic pressure transducer was employed to register time-spectra of pressure fluctuations behind the hydrofoil and, thereby, determine dedicated frequencies of unsteady regimes. A PIV technique was applied to measure the velocity fields and its fluctuations, which were compared for the free and forced flow conditions. The active flow control was implemented by means of a continuous liquid supply with different flow rates through a slot channel located in the GV surface at the distaence of 60% of the chord length from the foil leading edge. It was found that the active mass injection does not influence the primary flow upstream of the slot channel position absolutely. At small angles of incidence, the injection flow at velocities in the range between zero to 0.76 of the mean bulk velocity was observed not to practically influence the distributions of turbulent characteristics so that the global difference is only between the free and forced flow conditions. For cavitation-free and cavitation inception cases, the active mass injection was shown to make the flow turbulence structure more developed and the wake past the GV section more intense. However, the active flow control system considered also allows a favorable and efficient flow manipulation, especially at the regimes with developed gas-vapor cavities. The increasing share of inverter-based resources in bulk power systems reduces the total amount of mechanical inertia and increases the stochastic uncertainties of power system generation; both factors could cause the future power grid to operate closer to stability limits. Meanwhile, the need for flexible operations will cause more disturbances in future power grids which will challenge the transient stability of the system. To cope with the challenges, this paper proposes a novel wide-area control method utilizing battery energy storage systems to improve the transient angular stability of synchronous machines. The proposed method does not require information of the post- disturbance system and is robust to dynamic modeling uncertainties. The effectiveness of the proposed method is shown theoretically via transient energy analysis and demonstrated through simulation results in a multi-machine test system. Moreover, its advantage over a local control method is demonstrated and discussed.

Electro-hydraulic pressure-control valves are used in many applications, such as manufacturing equipment, agricultural machinery, and aircrafts to name a few. A traditional electro-hydraulic pressure-control valve regulates an output pressure for a corresponding input current by balancing solenoid force, spring force, and regulated pressure force. This results in a repeatable steady-state pressure output that is nearly proportional to the input current. This is helpful in open loop applications when one wants to achieve a consistent output pressure for a corresponding input current. The transient pressure response, however, is highly sensitive to the component tolerances and manufacturing processes as well as the fluid properties in the regulated volume, such as bulk modulus, viscosity, density, and aeration. These properties are often unknown in a system and can vary significantly from system to system and also during use in a typical application, making controllability difficult. Since there is variation in the steady-state pressure output for a given valve population, these valves are often calibrated in the end system to better achieve the desired output. This helps, but there is variation in this process, and also variation within a single valve over life. So although various attempts are made to minimize steady-state error, it will always exist and therefore closed loop control is desirable. Unfortunately, attempts at closed loop control of a traditional pressure-control valve often yield unacceptable and inconsistent performance. This is due to the sensitivity of the transient response to system characteristics, primarily fluid and mechanical properties of the regulated control port volume. The transient performance sensitivity of the valve can be reduced by de-coupling the regulated pressure dynamics from the spool dynamics. This will conversely increase the sensitivity of the steady state performance;however this can be solved through the implementation of
