This paper investigates the stakes of introducing probabilistic approaches for the management of power system's security. In real-time operation, the aim is to arbitrate in a rational way between preventive and corrective control, while taking into account i) the prior probabilities of contingencies, ii) the possible failure modes of corrective control actions, iii) the socio-economic consequences of service interruptions. This work is a first step towards the construction of a globally coherent decision making framework for security management from long-term system expansion, via mid-term asset management, towards short-term operation planning and real-time operation. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper deals with operation and security assessment of the autonomous power system of the island of Crete, which has reached high levels of RES penetration. In particular the paper investigates the effect of including in the system a number of concentrated solar plants, as well as hybrid power plants consisting of wind farms and hydro generators with pumped storage. Results indicate that integration of the proposed new resources will require minor system upgrades and/or modifications of operating practice to assure static and dynamic security. © 2013 IEEE.

In power systems, the automatic generation control (AGC) system is responsible for maintaining the nominal system frequency and the scheduled real power interchange between balancing areas. This paper proposes a framework to evaluate the effects of uncertainty arising from renewable-based electricity generation and noise in communication channels on the AGC system performance. To this end, we introduce a unified stochastic differential equation (SDE) model that includes power system dynamics and the AGC system (including the communication network on which its operation relies). We propagate the uncertainty from renewable-based resources and communication channel noise through the SDE model and investigate the resulting effect on AGC system performance. The proposed ideas are illustrated through a 4-bus test system. © 2013 IEEE.

The paper deals with a method of stability investigation for Smart Grid on the example of the Russky Island power network at the end of continental Russia in the Pacific region. The new forms of cross-Gramians and Gramians of controllability and observability for both finite and infinite time were used for the investigation. The software package MATLAB/Simulink was applied for the model creation and stability investigation of the Russky Island power network. The advantage of the new method of examination for stability compared with the use of H2-norm transfer matrix of the system is shown. © 2013 IEEE.

Most of the autonomous island power systems suffer high electricity costs due to expensive fuels. Interconnection of such systems to large mainland systems is an option to reduce operational costs. Recent evolutions in both cable technology and AC/DC/AC conversion promise feasible solutions. Since interconnection projects are of high cost, their economic feasibility must be carefully investigated;static, transient and dynamic system performance is crucial to reliably assess the volume of exchanges between the island and the bulk system and consequently to estimate the economic feasibility of the interconnection. This paper presents such an investigation, focusing on the transient stability issues, for the planned interconnection of the island of Crete to the Greek mainland. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper proposes outer loop active and reactive power controllers to ensure battery energy storage system (BESS) performance when connected to a network that exhibits low short circuit ratio. Inner loops control the BESS current components. The interface of BESSs with the grid is based on voltage source converters of STATCOM type which allow BESS providing not only active power control but also reactive power/voltage control. A meaningful design approach of both inner and outer loop controls is presented. Time domain simulation results show the problems encountered and the performance of the proposed control scheme. © 2013 IEEE.

Adaptive coordinated voltage control provides coordination of various devices within a wide area and adapts to the changing dynamics of power systems subjected to a series of faults. A new adaptive control is proposed for coordinated voltage control in this paper. The off-line training and on-line learning is used to acquire system knowledge. Accompanied by the system knowledge stored in a long-term memory, the on-line search and flexible control can perform a fast and effective control to prevent voltage instabilities. The simulation results for the IEEE 39 bus and 145 bus systems shows its efficiency. The comparison between controls of these two systems proves that the reduced solution space is not necessarily increased with the system scale. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper focuses on the use of extremely large data sets in power system operation, control, and protection, which are difficult to process with traditional database tools and often termed big data. We will discuss three aspects of using such data sets: feature extraction, systematic integration for power system applications, and examples of typical applications in the utility industry. The following analytics tasks based on big data methodology are elaborated upon: corrective, predictive, distributed and adaptive. The paper also outlines several research topics related to asset management, operation planning, realtime monitoring and fault detection/protection that present new opportunities but require further investigation. © 2013 IEEE.
