This is the response to the discussion submitted by Omid A. Mousavi and Rachid Cherkaoui regarding the presentations in the 'Managing Uncertainty in power systems' session in 9th irep symposium 2013. The points made by the authors of the discussion are important to consider, especially if investigating the effects of uncertainty sources on overall system performance. Operators need to be prepared to cope with events that are rare but might have detrimental consequences to power systems. To this end, the risk is evaluated as the product of consequence and probability of an event. © 2013 IEEE.

PMUs placed at different buses enable dynamic monitoring of a power system. The question is whether those limited PMU measurements can provide sufficient information. In this research, observability analysis is used to answer this question. Different observability concepts together with their related state monitoring applications are discussed in this paper. Nonlinear dynamic observability based on Lie derivatives is applied to the PMU-based dynamic monitoring of power system. The smallest singular value of the observability matrix serves as an observability index. A 3-bus system is used to illustrate the observability concepts presented in this paper. The concepts of observability are clarified and the nonlinear observability analysis provides a basis for PMU-based on-line wide area monitoring and control to improve the dynamic performance of power systems. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents a computational technique for conducting assessments of multi-area power system frequency dynamics using reachability analysis theory. To this end, a reduced-order model of the U.S. power system with high renewable penetration is derived. We investigate the control capabilities of HVDC lines to improve the frequency response of asynchronously connected regions, and to transmit the variability of renewable sources within synchronously connected areas. In this modeling framework, disturbances and parameters are treated as belonging to unknown-but-bounded sets. The analysis yields bounds that are guaranteed to contain the trajectories of all possible scenarios. © 2013 IEEE.

Nowadays the necessary coordination of trades to clear the energy market, while maintaining network security and adequacy of supply, is carried out centrally by a system operator. This paper examines the idea of an autonomously operating power system where energy trading is conducted in a decentralized manner among market players. A general decentralized solution framework is proposed, the main issues and challenges are discussed, and indicative results are presented to illustrate how the overall concept could work. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents a Model Predictive control (MPC) approach for Automatic Generation control, suitable for tackling deterministic frequency deviations in a multi-area interconnected power system. The current ProportionalIntegral (PI) controllers were compared to the implementation of MPC in a single area and also in all areas of an interconnected system. In a direct comparison, the MPC-based frequency control proved to be superior to the traditional PI control scheme. Moreover, the effect of inaccuracies between the MPC model and the dynamic model of the power system was studied. The proposed controller was found to be robust against inaccuracies of the model and possible external disturbances. © 2013 IEEE.

The importance of wind power generation has risen in the last years so much as to be considered among the most important and affordable Renewable Energy Sources (RES) with a growing rate faster than other technologies. This paper presents the process used by ENEL in order to optimize the tasks of scheduling, controlling and operating of multi-reservoir systems within the Italian energy market. The process described below is divided in three steps: definition of the constraints, real time operation and real time actuation. On the whole, the process covers a timeframe that begins up to 14 days before the day of delivery and ends with real-time actuation. Each step is characterized by a proper optimization process with different description of the objective function, constraints and with a different focus on the time horizon to be evaluated. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper, a multivariate statistical projection method based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is proposed for detecting and extracting unusual or anomalous events from wide-area monitoring data. The method combines PCA with statistical test to detect and analyze anomalous dynamic events from measured data. Simulations based on a transient stability model of the New England Test system are used to demonstrate the ability of the method to detect and extract system events from wide-area data. © 2013 IEEE.

We present a parallel implementation of three transmission switching algorithms. The first is based on a parallel search of all candidate lines, the second is based on a priority listing of lines and the third is based on decomposing the set of candidate lines in smaller subsets that are solved in parallel. We present a duality result that justifies the priority listing of the second algorithm. The We apply the algorithms on an IEEE 118 bus system and compare the relative performance of the algorithms in terms of cost of system operations. We envision the use of high performance computing for implementing the proposed algorithms in a real-time setting in order to exploit topology control of transmission networks for operating the system at minimum cost and for responding to system contingencies. © 2013 IEEE.
