The installation of phasor measurement units (PMUs) around the world enables wide-area monitoring and control applications. To incorporate PMU data in grid operations, system operators must understand, validate, and correct phasor measurements before using them in higher-level applications. In this paper, we first discuss the phasor measurement process that takes place inside a PMU, then we present a phasor state estimator to correlate and validate PMU data across a network, and finally we discuss a two-level interarea mode damping controller using remote phasor measurements. © 2013 IEEE.

For the non-linear power flow problem with PQ and reactive power limited slack and PV buses, we present two sufficient conditions under which the specified set of nonlinear algebraic equations has no solution. The first condition uses a semidefinite programming relaxation of the power flow equations along with binary variables to model the generators' reactive power capabilities. As a byproduct, this condition yields a voltage stability margin to the power flow solvability boundary. The second condition formulates the power flow equations, including generator reactive power limits, as a system of polynomials and uses real algebraic geometry and sum of squares programming to create infeasibility certificates which prove power flow insolvability. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents an innovative power system Restoration (PSR) that exploits the flexibility offered by large offshore wind parks, in particular with HVDC connection with Voltage Source converter (VSC) technology, to support restoration following a black out in a typical transmission grid. Restoration sequences comparing different strategies in a VHV AC network with conventional generation (thermal units and hydro units) were implemented for two cases: with and without the participation of a large offshore wind farm in the restoration plan. In order to evaluate the benefit of using Utility scale Wind Parks to support PSR, a typical transmission network with all its models (including HVDC link with DC converter) was implemented in EUROSTAG simulation platform. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper, it is investigated how detailed the model of a synchronous machine needs to be in order to assess transient stability using a Single Machine Equivalent (SIME). The results will show how the stability mechanism and the stability assessment are affected by the model detail. In order to identify the transient stability mechanism, a simulation with a high-order model was used as reference. The Western system Coordinating Council system (WSCC) and the New England & New York system are considered and simulations of an unstable and a stable scenario are carried out, where the detail of the machine models is varied. Analyses of the results suggest that a 4th-order model may be sufficient to represent synchronous machines in transient stability studies. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents a simplified methodology to estimate the impact of wind power over operating reserves in isolated power systems. The methodology is based on a convolution approach that merges the fluctuations of wind speed with the natural variations of demand, and formulates the probability distribution function of variables as a non-Gaussian behavior. The estimation renders a histogram containing the probability distribution of operating reserves required in different time spans. The methodology also estimates the LOLP indicator to assess the operative reserve of the system. An application on the expansion plan of a Chilean isolated power system is presented and results indicate that the methodology is able to estimate operating reserve needs in a time span ranging from 1 to 30 minutes, which adequately satisfy the future needs of this isolated power system. © 2013 IEEE.

We introduce a method for analyzing large-scale power systems by decomposing them into coupled lower order subsystems. This reduces the computational complexity of the analysis and enables us to scale the Sum of Squares programming framework for nonlinear system analysis. The method constructs subsystem Lyapunov functions which are used to estimate the region of attraction pertaining to the equilibrium point of each isolated subsystem. Then a disturbance analysis framework uses the level sets defined by these Lyapunov functions to calculate the stability of pairwise interacting subsystems. This analysis is then used to infer the stability of the entire system when an external disturbance is applied. We demonstrate the application of these techniques to the transient stability analysis of power systems. © 2013 IEEE.

The exploitation of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) allows to reduce the electricity energy supplied by fossil fuelled power plants but introduces significant issues in power system planning and operation. Especially for small islanded systems, a larger share of load covered by RES, mainly wind and photovoltaic (PV) plants, implies lower inertia and reduced regulation resources to address frequency stability issues. The paper focuses on frequency stability criticalities of the power system of Sicily operated as an electric island. Starting from the reconstruction of a real incident occurred in 2011, several scenarios are analyzed, characterized by different countermeasures (e.g. PV retrofitting, advanced controls on wind farms). The aim is to evaluate the benefit on security brought about by the introduction of these solutions. The study relies on the dynamic simulation of the control/defense/protection systems relevant for frequency stability. © 2013 IEEE.

New system solutions need to be introduced and deployed carefully to ensure good value to the user, effective deployment of technology, and reduced risk of stranded assets. This paper presents a methodology consisting of three effective steps for successful deployment of production-grade systems designed to perform and support disaster recovery environment. The article focuses on the deployment of most advanced technologies associated with the synchrophasor solution in electric power utilities. The steps include establishing requirements and specifications, implementing a real-time proof-of-concept (POC) performance validation center, and full deployment including end-to-end testing. Establishing such a facility is essential for successful deployment of production-grade advanced technologies in the field and at the enterprise level, and is indispensable in paving the path for effective and accelerated rollout of business cases. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper describes the possibility to improve transient stability for large generators using a series braking resistor. The method of dimensioning the resistor is presented together with results from dynamic simulations done in power system analysis tool PSS/E. It is found that adding a series braking resistor to a large thermal generator-turbine set results in a greatly increased transient stability when experiencing a close-up three-phase fault. The critical fault clearance time for the studied unit is increased from 150 ms to well above 250 ms. The simulations show that both the braking resistance and braking time influence the stability margin as well as the energy absorbed by the braking resistor. Results also show that the selection of braking resistance and braking time is not very sensitive to changes in the fault clearance time in terms of preserving transient stability. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents an hourly simulation model for the analysis in an annual context of the impact of large scale RES penetration on the Hellenic power system. The impact is assessed in terms of the system Marginal Price of the Day Ahead Market (DAM), taking into account the intermittency of the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) production and its optimal integration into the power system along with operational technical and economic considerations. The model is based on a slightly simplified version of the DAM clearing algorithm of the Hellenic wholesale electricity market [1]. Its purpose is to examine how the system behaves under large scale RES penetration and different configurations of the thermal capacity. It runs for milestone years such as 2020 or 2030, and it helps in evaluating, from an operational perspective, configurations stemming from optimal capacity expansion models that do not fully cover operational issues. Results provide an assessment of the potential cooperation between thermal, hydro and RES plants, highlighting that none of the above should be treated independently. © 2013 IEEE.
