This paper presents an hourly simulation model for the analysis in an annual context of the impact of large scale RES penetration on the Hellenic power system. The impact is assessed in terms of the system Marginal Price of the Day Ahead Market (DAM), taking into account the intermittency of the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) production and its optimal integration into the power system along with operational technical and economic considerations. The model is based on a slightly simplified version of the DAM clearing algorithm of the Hellenic wholesale electricity market [1]. Its purpose is to examine how the system behaves under large scale RES penetration and different configurations of the thermal capacity. It runs for milestone years such as 2020 or 2030, and it helps in evaluating, from an operational perspective, configurations stemming from optimal capacity expansion models that do not fully cover operational issues. Results provide an assessment of the potential cooperation between thermal, hydro and RES plants, highlighting that none of the above should be treated independently. © 2013 IEEE.

This work evaluates the opportunities for increased profits owing to the better management of energy deviations under a synergistic supply offer and demand bidding strategy of a wind energy producer and an electric vehicle (EV) aggregator that participate in day-ahead energy and regulation reserve market. The new market player acts as a prosumer and participates in the electricity market with synergistic offers and bids of the two entities he represents. Key factors of uncertainty affecting the bidding strategy are identified and incorporated in a stochastic optimization framework. The case of night residential EV charging is examined and unidirectional interaction between EVs and the grid is considered, i.e. the EVs do not discharge energy back to the grid. The possibility for increased profits through the holistic consideration and better management of the energy deviations under specific market rules is examined in this work. Finally, the impact of wind curtailment opportunity in energy deviation management was also examined. © 2013 IEEE.

The paper deals with control structures and functionalities contributing to the distribution grid smartness in the presence of distributed generators (DG). The Primary Cabin (PC) hosting DG is analyzed assuming a voltage control scheme that includes the Transformer (TR) with On-Load Tap Changer (OLTC), but also generators and FACTS allowing their reactive power remote control. Therefore more and contemporary closed loops controls operate on the same voltage variable or on the strictly linked reactive power. These combined efforts require a proper coordination among the operating control loops having different dynamic performances. Promising proposals of alternative coordinated PC controls, including the reactive power flow between the HV and MV bus-bars, are presented. They are substantially aimed to achieve effective automatic regulations by simple and practical solutions. The considered control schemes take into account different PC operating conditions including the islanded network covered by proper functional variant. The considered PC regulator is also provided with automation functionalities operating a timely and proper switching of capacitor banks and shunt reactors when remotely controllable. © 2013 IEEE.

Linear sensitivity distribution factors (DFs) are commonly used in power systems analyses, e.g., to determine whether or not the system is N-1 secure. This paper proposes a method to compute linear sensitivity distribution factors (DFs) in near real-time without relying on the system power flow model. Instead, through linear least-squares estimation (LSE), the proposed method only uses high-frequency synchronized data collected from phasor measurement units (PMUs) to estimate the injection shift factors (ISFs). Subsequently, ISFs can be used to compute other DFs. Such a measurement-based approach is desirable since it is adaptive to changes in system operating point and topology. We illustrate the value of the proposed measurement-based DF estimation approach over the traditional model-based method through several examples. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents novel methods based on Affine Arithmetic (AA) for voltage and transient stability assessment of power systems, considering uncertainties of power injections from intermittent generation sources such as wind and solar. These methods, which are an alternative to the well-known sampling and probabilistic based approaches, are able to improve the computational efficiency as compared to simple Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, with reasonably accuracy. The presented AA-based voltage stability method computes the hull of PV curves associated with the assumed uncertainties, and results are discussed in detail for a 5-bus test system. On the other hand, the proposed AA-based transient stability method solves the set of differential-algebraic equations in affine form, based on a trapezoidal integration approach, that yields the hull of the dynamic response of the system, for a set of assumed contingencies and uncertainties;this approach is demonstrated on a generator-infinite bus test system. In both presented stability studies, MC simulations are used for comparison and validation purposes. © 2013 IEEE.

Wide-area synchrophasor applications inherently depend on the underlying IT and communications infrastructure supporting them. In particular, closed loop control systems for power grid oscillation damping is problematic, as it is a complex mixture of power grid monitoring, communication network properties and overall system stability issues. This article offers a holistic analysis of these fields, proposing a combined requirement on the full system: to keep system delays down to maintain stability. Simulation results to support the analysis findings, also showing how observability of power oscillations is important in combination with system delays related to feedback signals, and finally laying out experimentation plans to be performed in the lab on a complex power-grid model with real PMUs, communication network and controllers interacting with the SmarTS Lab real-time hardware-in-the-loop simulator platform. © 2013 IEEE.

Increasing wind power penetration levels bring about new challenges for power systems operation and planning, because wind power forecast errors increase the uncertainty faced by the different actors. One specific problem is generation re-dispatch during the operation period, a problem in which the system operator seeks the cheapest way of re-dispatching generators while maintaining an acceptable level of system security. Stochastic optimal power flows are re-dispatch algorithms which account for the uncertainty in the optimization problem itself. In this article, an existing stochastic optimal power flow (SOPF) formulation is extended to include the case of non-Gaussian distributed forecast errors. This is an important case when considering wind power, since it has been shown that wind power forecast errors are in general not normally distributed. Approximations are necessary for solving this SOPF formulation. The method is illustrated in a small power system in which the accuracy of these approximations is also assessed for different probability distributions of the load and wind power. © 2013 IEEE.

Traditional short-circuit modeling techniques and the associated models existing in commercially available packages are not accurate enough and do not accurately represent the behavior of converter interfaced renewable energy resources during short-circuit events. To address those issues, detailed EMT-type, time domain models of Type III and Type IV wind turbines have been developed as part of this work. Those models can be used to achieve an improved understanding of the way in which these devices affect system protection and of improved short-circuit models for system studies. The potential impact of renewable energy resources on relay misoperation and protection coordination is discussed, given that depending on the type of the wind turbines and the associated controls, the short circuit current contribution of a wind park might be the same for different locations of the fault. Finally, presently available modeling techniques of renewables in frequency domain are presented and compared. Their disadvantages are discussed along with an approach for improved modeling. © 2013 IEEE.

The integration of the European electricity market constitutes a critical and contemporary issue, expected to take place within year 2015. In view of the forthcoming RES penetration, physical markets with unit-based offers-either power pools or power Exchanges (PXs)-check the feasibility of the electricity market solution against their intra-zonal transmission capacity constraints. An iterative process is examined, with two variations, differentiating only in the way that the internal network of each physical market is represented. In each iteration of the proposed algorithm, intra-zonal power flows are calculated, possible violations of internal transmission limits are identified and additional constraints are incorporated in the centralized market splitting problem, in order to avoid the overloading of internal transmission lines. The attained results are compared to those of a centralized market-splitting problem, considering the full European network configuration. The above methods are compared in terms of (a) solution efficiency, (b) correct pricing and (c) computational efficiency. © 2013 IEEE.

One of the most common control decisions faced by power system operators is the question of how to dispatch generation to meet demand for power. This is a complex optimization problem that includes many nonlinear, non convex constraints as well as inherent uncertainties about future demand for power and available generation. In this paper we develop convex formulations to appropriately model crucial classes of nonlinearities and stochastic effects. We focus on solving a nonlinear optimal power flow (OPF) problem that includes loss of synchrony constraints and models wind-farm caused fluctuations. In particular, we develop (a) a convex formulation of the deterministic phase-difference nonlinear Optimum power Flow (OPF) problem;and (b) a probabilistic chance constrained OPF for angular stability, thermal overloads and generation limits that is computationally tractable. © 2013 IEEE.
