Super-scalar, out-of-order processors that can have tens of read and write requests in the execution window place significant demands on Memory Level parallelism (MLP). Multi- and many-cores with shared parallel caches further increase MLP demand. Current cache hierarchies however have been unable to keep up with this trend, with modern designs allowing only 4-16 concurrent cache misses. this disconnect is exacerbated by recent highly parallel architectures (e.g. GPUs) where power and area per-core budget favor lighter cores with less resources. Support for hardware and software prefetch increase MLP pressure since these techniques overlap multiple memory requests with existing computation. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a novel Resource-Aware Prefetching (RAP) compiler algorithm that is aware of the number of simultaneous prefetches supported, and optimized for the same. We show that in situations where not enough resources are available to issue prefetch instructions for all references in a loop, it is more beneficial to decrease the prefetch distance and prefetch for as many references as possible, rather than use a fixed prefetched distance and skip prefetching for some references, as in current approaches. We implemented our algorithm in a GCC-derived compiler and evaluated its performance using an emerging fine-grained many-core architecture. Our results show that the RAP algorithm outperforms a well-known loop prefetching algorithm by up to 40.15% and the state-of-the art GCC implementation by up to 34.79%. Moreover, we compare the RAP algorithm with a simple hardware prefetching mechanism, and show improvements of up to 24.61%. © 2010 IEEE.

Grid technologies provide a valuable solution for distributed scientific applications but are not readily available for the 4th Generation Languages (4GLs) widely used in physics, climate modeling and medicine. Examples of 4GLs are Interactive Data Language (IDL) and MATLAB. there is a need for tools allowing 4GLs to interoperate with the Grid. this paper describes our design and the status of the tools under development, which include IDL bindings for Web Sen'ices and tools for running and managing parallel and serial IDL processes on Grids and clusters. ©2005 IEEE.

the Grid seems to be everywhere, with announcements appearing almost every day of Grid products, sales, and deployments from major vendors. However, in spite of the popularity of the term, there is often confusion as to what the Grid is and what problems it solves. Is there any "there there" or is it all just marketing hype? In this talk, I will address these questions, describing what the Grid is, what problems it solves, and what technology has been developed to build Grid infrastructure and create Grid applications. I will review the current status of Grid infrastructure and deployment and give examples of where Grid technology is being used not only to perform current tasks better, but to provide fundamentally new capabilities that are not possible otherwise.

As grid architectures provide execution environments that are distributed, parallel and dynamic, applications require to be not only parallel and distributed, but also able to adapt themselves to their execution environment. this article presents a model for designing self-adaptable parallel components that can be assembled to build applications for grid. this model includes the definition of a consistency criterion for the dynamic adaptation of SPMD components. We propose a solution to implement this criterion. It has been evaluated on both synthetic and real codes to exhibit the behavior of the several proposed strategies

Effectiveness of parallel/distributed application control based on predicates defined on application global states depends on the performance of an underlying consistent global state monitoring mechanism. Focusing on strongly consistent global states (SCGS) usage, we introduce three measures of SCGS monitoring quality. they reflect delay, state information ageing and state inspection frequency experienced by a monitor. Using the measures, four SCGS monitoring algorithms are compared, including two novel algorithm variants. the comparison is carried out with the use of simulations. the newly introduced algorithms prove to perform much better than a standard SCGS algorithm

Components can be a useful tool in software development, including the development of scientific computing applications. Many scientific applications require parallel execution, but commodity component models based on remote method invocation do not directly support the notion of parallel components. parallel components raise questions about the semantics of method invocations and the mechanics of parallel data redistribution involving these components. Allowing parallel components to exist within a component framework comes at very little extra cost to the framework designer. However, the interaction semantics (i.e. method invocations) between two parallel components or between a parallel and non-parallel component can be complex and should require support from the underlying run-time system. the parallel data redistribution problem comes about when in order to increase efficiency, data are subdivided among cooperating parallel tasks within one component. When two or more components of this type are required to perform a separate computation on the same data, this data distribution must be decoded and mapped from the first component to the second component's specification. We demonstrate a method to handle parallel method invocation and perform automatic data redistribution using the code generation process of an interface definition language compiler. the generated code and run-time system accomplish the necessary data transfers and provide consistent behavior to method invocation. We describe the implementation of and semantics of parallel remote method invocation. We describe how collective method calls can be used to provide coherent interactions between multiple components. Several results and benchmarks are discussed.

Data grids are becoming a popular infrastructure for distributed, data intensive scientific application. Data access optimization is one of the key features of such systems, as the transfer and access to the huge amounts of data are often the bottleneck of the data intensive tasks. Concept of replication, creation of multiple copies of a data source across multiple grid nodes, was adopted by grid community to increase data availability. In this paper, we present the ongoing work on the grid replica optimization framework that addresses both short-term and long-term replica optimization problems. We describe high level architecture of the optimization framework and discuss the promising results achieved by prototype implementation of several system components

High-performance interconnection networks are crucial in massively parallel computers. Routing is one of the most important design issues of interconnection networks. Moreover, the huge amount of hardware of these machines makes fault-tolerance another important design issue. In this paper, we propose a mechanism that combines scalable routing and fault-tolerance for commercial switches to build direct regular topologies, which are the topologies used in large machines. the hardware required is not complex. Furthermore, it allows a high degree of fault-tolerance inflicting a minimal decrease of performance
