In this paper, an efficient architecture for multiplicative inversion in GF(2/sup m/) using addition chains is presented. The approach followed was based on the Itoh-Tsujii algorithm targeting a fast implementation on reconfigurable hardware devices. We give the design details of the proposed architecture whose main building blocks are a field multi-squarer block, a field polynomial multiplier and a BRAM two-port memory. Our design is able to compute multiplicative inversion in GF(2/sup 193/) in about 1.33/spl mu/S using only 27 clock cycles.

This paper focuses on the development of a maintainable information filtering system. The simple and efficient solution to this problem is to block the Web sites by URL, including IP address. However, it is not efficient for unknown Web sites and it is difficult to obtain complete block list. Content based filtering is suggested to overcome this problem as an additional strategy of URL filtering. The manual rule based method is widely applied in current content filtering systems, but they overlook the knowledge acquisition bottleneck problems. To solve this problem, we employed the multiple classification ripple-down rules (MCRDR) knowledge acquisition method, which allows the domain expert to maintain the knowledge base without the help of knowledge engineers. Throughout this study, we prove the MCRDR based information filtering system can easily prevent unknown Web information from being delivered and easily maintain the knowledge base for the filtering system.

In software development, many kinds of knowledge are shared and reused as software patterns. However, the relation analysis among software patterns by hand is difficult on the large scale. In this paper, we propose a technique for the automatic relation analysis among the patterns. Our technique is based on a new pattern model to treat various patterns, and utilizes exiting text processing techniques to extract patterns from documents and to calculate the strength of pattern relations. As a result of experiments, the system that implements our technique has extracted appropriate relations among patterns without information on relations described in original pattern documents. Moreover, our system has the ability to suggest relations among patterns that the author has not noticed.

Hidden Markov model has been successfully applied to bacterial gene finders and mRNA splicing modeling. Using a set of observing DNA sequences, HMM is derived for homologous search. In this paper we develop profile HMM in detecting p53, a tumor suppressor, binding sites along genes. Without assuming the constant number of nucleotides in p53 binding site, profile HMM and viterbi algorithms are designed to detect the embedded p53 binding sites from the promoter genes chosen from GenBank. The p53 regulated genes containing either single or multiple p53 binding sites distributed as clusters can be identified and classified into 7 functional groups including cell cycle regulation, DNA damage repair, signaling transduction, transcriptional factor, stress response, tumor suppressor, and oncogen.

Design patterns document good design solutions to a recurring problem in a particular context. They are typically modeled using UML. In practice, however, pattern-related information is lost when a design pattern is applied or composed because UML does not keep track of this information. Consequently, the designer cannot identify design patterns used in software system design diagrams. The benefits of design patterns are compromised because the designers cannot communicate with each other in terms of the design patterns they use and their design decisions and tradeoffs. In this paper, we present a Web service (VisDP) for explicitly visualizing design patterns in UML diagrams. This Web service is developed based on a UML profile containing new stereotypes, tagged values and constraints for visualizing design patterns in UML diagrams. With this service, the user is able to identify design patterns by moving the mouse and viewing color changes in UML diagrams. Additional pattern-related information can be dynamically displayed based on the mouse location.

Shape is one of the fundamental visual features in the content-based image retrieval (CBIR) paradigm. Numerous shape descriptors have been proposed in the literature. These can be broadly categorized as region-based and contour-based descriptors. Contour-based shape descriptors make use of only the boundary information, ignoring the shape interior content. Therefore, these descriptors cannot represent shapes for which the complete boundary information is not available. On the other hand, region-based descriptors exploit both boundary and internal pixels, and therefore are applicable to generic shapes. Among the region-based descriptors, moments have been very popular since they were first introduced in the 60's. In this paper, we study and compare three moment-based descriptors: Invariant moments, Zernike moments, and radial Chebyshev moments. Experiments on the MPEG-7 shape databases show that radial Chebyshev moments achieve the highest retrieval performance.

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) are autonomous, infrastructureless networks that support multi-hop communication through IP routing. MANET and Internet have many differences. These differences are not only the structure and topology of the networks, but also communication patterns of nodes in both networks. Therefore, it is a challenging problem for MANET to access to the Internet due to these differences. There are many kinds of accessing mode such as single fix gateway or multi-gateway, where load-balancing is the most important problem. In this paper, we propose the dynamic gateway concept that acts as an interface between MANET and the Internet. These dynamic gateways can use mobile IP and DSDV protocol when they communicate with the Internet and interact with MANET, respectively. The dynamic gateway is used to solve the load-balancing problem. Several simulation experimental results in the dynamic gateway environment show that the performance of network has been improved.

In telecommunication networks and in computer grid networks, a significant ongoing research is in a technology known as wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), which is capable to transport more than 1 Tbps aggregate traffic over a single fiber. However, when massive amounts of information are transported, as in optical networks, there are three issues that stand, cost-efficient ultra-high bandwidth delivery, security of information and data, and security of the network and of the transporting link layer. In optical networks, each fiber link consists of segments, each several kilometers long. Since a single WDM channel carries traffic, there are opportunities for sophisticated eavesdroppers to tap the fiber, copy a channel, isolate a specific payload and attempt to decrypt it if the encryption key is known or it is breakable with a fast computer. Therefore, end-to-end data security should not only rely on the client's encryption method but also on securing the transmission method on the optical link. In this paper, we present a WDM link security methodology that encrypts multiple channels and with multiple keys to render channel monitoring by eavesdroppers virtually impossible. Although our paper presents the applicability of the method on a point-to-point topology, it is applicable to a multilink and edge-to-edge network path.

Current mobile agent systems are based on agent architectures that are partially or fully implementation programming language-specific. Mobile agent implementation in a specific programming language has usage limitations as the inter agent communication and agent migration to other agent hosts needs support for the same language. Widely used Java-based agents have an advantage of easy agent migration through bytecode transfer but this also imposes the requirement of a Java virtual machine (JVM) on each agent host where agents can migrate. To achieve a truly system independent and agent system architecture independent solution, we propose a XML-based mobile agent architecture. This paper presents a mobile agent system design based on the use of XML-based agent code, the UDDI registry for agent registration and lookup/discovery and XML Web service calls for mobile agent intercommunication and migration. This also facilitates industry to have easier and less risky adaptation from existing agent system implementation.

Interactive Data Language (IDL) is an array-oriented data analysis and visualization application, which is widely used in research, commerce, and education. It is meaningful to make user IDL applications collaborative between computers over networks, using a common message broker as the underlying communication system. In order to achieve the global collaboration, we have brought together in the research a Grid-based collaboration paradigm, a shared event model, different implementing structures, methodologies and technologies. We have succeeded in our prototype codes, and we are currently working on a real life IDL application package to make it collaborative. At the same time, we are trying to find better structures and methods for the collaboration in general user IDL applications.
