A scalable wallet-size cluster computing system has been proposed to obtain low cost, low power consumption and small sized digital home processing center. In this paper, we apply the wallet-size cluster for H.264 encoding to accelerate the H.264 video processing. We analyze the encoder scheme of the H.264, and perform the H.264 encoding in parallel through the nodes of the cluster. The experimental results show that an efficient real time video processing for H.264 can be achieved

The new video coding standard, H.264 allows motion estimation performing on tree-structured block partitioning and multiple reference frames. This feature improves the prediction accuracy significantly, but the cost of which is the complexity and computation load of video coding increase drastically. The reference software of H.264 adopts a full search scheme and its complexity increases linearly with specified the number of reference frames and the number of modes respectively. In this paper, we propose a fast mode decision algorithm in H.264 which eliminates searching unnecessary modes. The proposed algorithm takes full use of available information obtained from the previous searching process, e.g., macroblock's best mode in searching the previous reference frames. In the algorithm implementation, multiple half-stop conditions have been set in motion estimation so as to decrease encoder's complexity. Simulation results show that this proposed algorithm can effectively reduce complexity of inter-frame encoding, and the quality degradation is tiny compared with full search scheme. Furthermore, our algorithm is adaptive to variant test sequences, no need to set specific experimental threshold.

In-line bit interleaving has over the last decade been used in a number of papers, where it has proven to he very effective. However, little or nothing has been said about its advantages and why it should be used in favor of conventional bit interleaving. In this paper, we offer an analysis of the inline bit interleaver and elucidate the advantages of using it. The mutual information (MI) constellation is introduced as a useful tool, both for the analysis and the code design. With its assistance, we show how some common code design principles rely on conventional bit interleaving. The system considered is serially concatenated trellis coded modulation (SCTCM), consisting of a serially concatenated convolutional code (SCCC) of rate 2/3 and an 8PSK mapper. Simulation results are given for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The results show a clear improvement in the bit error rate (BER) performance for systems using in-line bit interleaving.

This paper describes a scalable approach to the enabling of legacy scientific applications on computing grids using a service-oriented architecture. In the context of this paper grid-enabling means turning an existing application, installed on a grid resource, into a service and generating the application-specific user interfaces to use that application through a Web portal. Scalability is achieved by providing a common abstraction for a category of applications and providing a "generic" application service to wrap those applications as services. The focus of this paper's approach is on grid-enabling "command-oriented" scientific applications. The novel aspect of the approach is that the entire process -from turning an application into a service to the user-interface generation for that application - is done automatically, without requiring coding or grid-system downtime. Portlet technology is used to dynamically generate application-specific interfaces. Further, the approach makes it possible to customize the applications for different user groups by way of simplifying, restricting or composing the functionalities of applications. The approach is useful for building grid portals on which a large number of applications need to be dynamically enabled.

An ad hoc wireless network is limited by the characteristics of multi-hop, so its network efficiency cannot be improved by multi-channel technology. This investigation exploits the code division multiple access (CDMA) technology. Employing this technology, even to a single frame, enables the frame header and the frame payload to be modulated separately using a common spreading code and a special spreading code. Some data fields in the frame header are used to announce the spreading code used in the frame payload. A spreading code database is also maintained in every node to support negotiation by special spreading code to prevent the code collision. The RTS/CTS is modified into ERTS/ECTS, and a negotiation process is proposed to get the special spreading code without collision. The algorithm CSMA/CA is modified into CDCSMA/CA to enhance the performance of the ad hoc network. The proposed procedure can be followed to enable numerous node pairs to transmit at the same time as each other. Therefore, the performance of the ad hoc network is significantly.

This paper proposes an innovative solution to design the search interfaces of search engines with soft real-time guarantee. Our solution presents a new scheduling model to enable flexible relative deadline and a time prediction algorithm to overcome the uncertainty of varied execution time. The time prediction algorithm is also proved to be optimal if the elements of sampling vectors are independent. The results of the experiment show that this new model can fully utilize the processor with a very low ratio of task abortion.
