Leveraging Grid computing technology, i.e. the virtualization of distributed computing and data resources such as processing, network bandwidth and storage capacity to create a single system image, we present a Grid Air Quality Forecast System (G-AQFS). The Modeling system consists of meteorological and dispersion models coupled in cascade. The computational workflow of the Modeling system is defined by means of DAGs (Direct Acyclic Graph). A simple system is presented to manage and schedule the computational Grid resources. As case study the system has been applied over Salento area, in the Apulia region (South-eastern Italy), to simulate ground level ozone concentration. Model predictions have been compared with field measurements, with reasonable results.

A huge quantity of Earth Observation and geospatial data is produced daily by numerous satellites launched by several worldwide space agencies. The Processing of remote sensing data requires several steps, some of which are computationally intensive. The extraction of prominent information from remote sensing data requires a coordinated use of many applications and algorithms. Sharing computational resources among different scientists represents the sole way to approach the problem in order to achieve good performance. In this paper, we describe a Problem Solving Environment for remote sensing data processing layered on grid technologies. The proposed architecture allows sharing resources among different organizations taking into account each access policy defined by the owner of the resource.

The paper presents a hybrid technique for the classification of web returned hits into concept hierarchies. The technique involves a combination of manual and automatic classifiers. At first, all web returned documents are assigned to human defined categories using manual classifiers, and then automatic classifiers are used to generate a concept hierarchy for each of these categories. The results of the evaluation reveal the following: (a) for polysemous queries, our system is able to generate meaningful categories corresponding to (but not limited to), the different semantic facets of the queries;(b) as expected, for non-polysemous queries the system generates fewer categories;(c) the hierarchy precision of the concept hierarchies generated for polysemous queries is found to be significantly better when compared to the one obtained using a baseline system.

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are collections of autonomous mobile nodes with links that are made or broken in an arbitrary way. They have no fixed infrastructure and may have constrained resources. The next generation of IT applications is expected to rely heavily on such networks. However before they can be successfully deployed several security threats must be addressed. These are mainly due to the ad hoc nature of these networks. Consequently it may be much harder (or even impossible) to establish routing communication paths that can tolerate malicious faults. In this paper we first propose a general Bayesian model that satisfies the basic mobility requirements of a MANET and define the requirements for secure communication in this model. We then consider several multipath routing schemes and propose a new adaptive multipath routing algorithm that satisfies our security requirements.

This paper presents a semi-parallel architecture for decoding Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes. A modified version of Min-Sum algorithm has been used which has the advantage of simpler computations compared to Sum-Product algorithm without any loss in performance. Special structure of the parity check matrix of the proposed code leads to an efficient semi-parallel implementation of the decoder for a family of (3, 6) LDPC codes. A prototype architecture has been implemented in VHDL on programmable hardware. The design is easily scalable and reconfigurable for larger block sizes. Simulation results show that our proposed decoder for a block length of 1536 bits can achieve data rates up to 127 Mbps.

The eXtensible Markup Language (XML) is becoming a new standard for information representation and exchange over the Internet. How to index XML data for efficient query processing is an important subject in the XML community. In this paper based on the extended preorder indexing method, path information is added as part of the index. It is shown that the number of path joins can be reduced to the number of the "interested points", but not related to the length of the path expression in a query. The extra space needed is about the same as the extended preorder labeling method. Experimental results showed significant improvements by using the new indexing method over naive extended preorder labeling method.

In spatial resolution reduction transcoding, the original resolution of the incoming frames is reduced to a lower resolution in the out going frames. In the reduced resolution the motion vector of every macroblock needs to be calculated from the corresponding four macroblock of the original frame. Instead of re-estimating these motion vectors, a number of techniques recompose these vectors using the incoming information to reduce computational complexity. Many techniques utilize the quantized DCT coefficients of residual blocks for composing the invalid vectors. This paper proposes a new motion vector composition technique by normalizing the low frequency DCT coefficients with the visual quantization matrix (VQM) derived from the study of human visual system (HVS). Simulation results show that the performance of this modified technique is better compared to other similar techniques.

Punctured convolutional codes were first introduced by *** etc. in 1979 [3]. Rate-compatible punctured convolutional codes (RCPCs), presented by J. Hagenauer [4], form a subclass of punctured convolutional codes. Hereinafter, we call punctured convolutional codes as punctured codes. In searching for RCPCs with good performances *** used a property that cyclic permutations of puncturing patterns give the same code performance. But we cannot find the detailed description and proof for the corresponding property. The property is also very useful in adaptive modulation and coding, and in blind recognition of punctured codes. Therefore it is valuable for us to describe the relationship between the parity-check matrices of punctured codes and the equivalent puncturing patterns. In this paper, we firstly give an equivalent partition of puncturing patterns. Then we show that equivalent puncturing patterns deduce equivalent punctured codes.

Personalization recommendation is a valid method for lightening the user's burden on information retrieval. In order to implement personalization recommendation for text information retrieval (TR), User-focus is defined and algorithms for the construction of user-focus are given in this paper. The construction of user-focus for a user depends on his entire query requests at a period of time. Each query request of the user is treated as a transaction between TR system and him. Items in a transaction are non-noise words in the query request corresponding with the transaction. Each item is weighted with a value to measure the importance of the item for the user. Weighted frequent itemset is used for the user-focus's construction. In order to mine weighted frequented itemset fast, an algorithm named as WeightedFP is presented The experimental result shows that the implementation of personalization recommendation based on user-focus can lighten the user's burden caused by the work of filtering valid information from vast information in some degree while time requirement of TR is satisfied well.

Most XML-Enabled database management systems can only translate a few relations into an XML document. Moreover, the translation is without data semantics constraints consideration, which may not be sufficient for information highway on the web. The demand on database is increased in e-commerce. Not only relational database (RDB) is needed for traditional data processing, but also its equivalent XML documents (database) are needed for B2B applications. Therefore, performance for online conversion from relational data to XML document is an issue. This paper aims to create a replicate XML database for a company's RDB to improve database performance, and to automate XML database recovery in case of system failures. For any successful update to the RDB, corresponding update will be applied to its replicate XML database. The result is an incrementally maintained XML database for efficient and effective computing for e-commerce. In summary, Internet computing performance can be improved because a replicate XML database and its counterpart RDB can be parallel processing for both internal data and external data transmission on the Internet. Furthermore, an XML database can be recovered by its counterpart RDB once it is down.
