This paper describes the experiences in coordinating a first year programming course at Griffith University since Semester 1, 2000. In this time, the course structure and content have evolved to implement and evaluate an "objects-as-needed" approach to first year programming with the recent return to an "objects-early" approach. A variety of assessment strategies have also been employed in order to maximize student-learning outcomes. The success of the revised course has continuously been measured by evaluating student feedback and performance. Finally, a focus group-based strategy of evaluation was adopted to determine students' attitudes to the most recently implemented changes.

In our previous work, we proposed the "impact factors" (IFs) to measure the symmetric errors in different microarray experiments, and integrated the IFs to the Golub and Slonim (GS) and k-nearest neighbors (kNN) classifiers. In this paper, we perform experiments with different cancer types, which are lung adenocarcinomas and prostate cancer, to further validate the efficiency and effectiveness of the IFs integrations in terms of measurements of classification accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. For both cancer types, the IFs integrations can be successfully improved on the classification performance.

The application of information technologies (IT) to government services is termed electronic government (e-government). The drive to implement e-government is a global phenomenon. This research is concerned about the application of IT for online education and training (also known as, e-learning) for government employees and citizens. A summary review of the latest technological developments and practices in e-learning have been provided to help the professionals, managers, and policy makers of both profit and nonprofit organizations to identify the areas of IT they can invest to bring about efficiency and cost savings in continuous education and training. The research also identifies several research projects within the area to further advance the field.

Establishing the security properties of executable code provides an important challenge for advocates of ubiquitous computing. We provide a framework that utilises component composition techniques in order to establish such properties for a composed application in a ubiquitous environment. The framework accounts for the need to establish the properties of individual components, and draws on composition results in order to establish overall properties for composed applications. The framework utilises XML composition templates to provide extensibility, so that new composition results will further enhance its effectiveness.

The eXtensible Markup Language (XML) is becoming a new standard for information representation and exchange over the Internet. How to index XML data for efficient query processing is an important subject in the XML community. In this paper, based on the extended preorder indexing method, path information is added as part of the index. It is shown that the number of path joins can be reduced to the number of the "interested points", but not related to the length of the path expression in a query. The extra space needed is about the same as the extended preorder labeling method. Experimental results showed significant improvements by using the new indexing method over naive extended preorder labeling method.

The paper discusses a technique for on-line compression of ASCII files. There is a need for fast compression technique that can also produce no overhead data, and with a set amount of memory. Current text compression methods are possibly far superior with some of the characteristics, but none meet all of these needs. The proposed compression scheme uses multiple static dictionaries and a pre-generated variable length code. The method compresses text files of various sizes to approximately 60 percent of their original size.

Current business presentations are commonly multimedia-based and with the realization of the mobile enterprise, accessing of such presentations stored on servers from mobile devices becomes increasingly common. However as a roaming mobile device user moves, factors that change include the local wireless network technology, the available bandwidth, the currently closest source of the media files and even the continuity of wireless access. The XML-based standard, synchronized multimedia integration language (SMIL), provides a format to specify the display sequence and layout of media files in a multimedia presentation. We present a SMIL-based system for mobile devices that is able to dynamically adapt presentations in response to such changing mobile computing-related factors as those given above.

We focus on visually meaningful color image watermarks, we construct a new digital watermarking scheme based on the discrete cosine transformation. The proposed method uses the sensitivity of human eyes to adoptively embed a watermark in a color image. In addition, to prevent tampering or unauthorized access, a new watermark permutation function is proposed, which causes a structural noise over the extracted watermark. Also, we have proposed a procedure to eliminate this noise to decrease false positives and false negatives in the extracted watermark. The experimental results show that embedding the color watermark adapted to the original image produces the most imperceptible and the most robust watermarked image under geometric and volumetric attacks.

Novel approaches are needed to support content-based retrieval on geographic image databases. Motivated by the success in the text-based information retrieval, where the indexing and retrieval is based on keywords, we present the framework of geoblock-based image retrieval, where the retrieval is conducted based on the concept of visual keyword: "geoblock". We introduce a learning vector quantization (LVQ) based approach to construct the dictionary of semantic-oriented geoblocks. Based on the frequency and correlation of these geoblocks in the images, comprehensive geographic image features are extracted to facilitate image retrieval. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach.

Programmable, high throughput domain specific crypto processors are required for different networking applications. We present the architectural design features that lead to a multiple Gbits/s rate AES coprocessor, which is programmable with domain specific instructions for Gbit throughput IPSec and other applications. Our design is a loosely coupled, independently working crypto-coprocessor that runs AES in ECB, CBC-MAC, Counter, and CCM modes of operation at a maximum throughput of 3.43 Gbits/s in a 0.18 /spl mu/m CMOS technology without any penalty in throughput for any of the above modes.
