A new technique for optimally encoding a given source statistical properties of which are described by the first-order model is introduced. The calculation of codeword lengths is based on construction of a new source with statistics that is determined by the consecutive redistribution of the probabilities of symbols in accordance with their original probabilities at each stage of the encoding. The proposed method performs equally well for different orders of symbol probabilities. While codewords are generated by a separate combinatorial procedure, the overall computational cost of the proposed method is lower than that for the Huffman code.

Bioinformatics is as a bridge between life science and computer science: computer algorithms are needed to face complexity of biological processes. Bioinformatics applications manage complex biological data stored into distributed and often heterogeneous databases and require large computing power. We discuss requirements of such applications and present the architecture of PROTEUS, a grid-based problem solving environment that integrates ontology and workflow approaches to enhance composition and execution of bioinformatics applications on the grid.

New advancement in FPGA-DSP technology demands a new number system as well as a new data treatment that best utilizes the strengths and avoid the shortcomings of the new technology. To achieve this goal, here we introduce a customized floating-point number system that it can be reformatted as a fixed-point number when needed. In addition, a scheme is proposed for the use of both formats in DSP applications, such as in digital filter design.

The new economy is the result of the information revolution that promotes the emergence of networked, ubiquitous and collaborative service provision. Furthermore, the globalisation of trade has increased the number of competitors, driving the need for federated and networked business models. In this paper we argue that next generation ASP models could benefit from the use of the grid. We describe a grid-enabled architecture for coordinated resource sharing and problem solving in dynamic, multi-institutional ASP vendors.

A trusted third party (TTP) has been employed in many distributed applications to provide various services such as security and reliability. This paper presents an insight into distributing the trust among a set of hosts supporting distributed applications. It critically analyses the current work and suggests perspective solutions to the problem exhibited by using a single TTP, i.e. performance and security bottlenecks, in providing trust services in general and in agent-based threshold proxy sigcryption (ATPS) protocol proposed in [A Secure Method for Signature Delegation to Mobile Agents] in specific.

We propose moving objects data model and its query language over GML documents. The conventional query languages about GML have been studied with priority given to the integration of geographic information, the support of spatial operations, etc. However, it lacks the support for moving object queries. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the moving objects query language that supports moving object queries for GML documents by extension of XQuery that is standard XML query language. Also, data model, algebra operation and various moving objects operators for the proposed query language are designed.

We examine two different schemes of three dimensional parity checking codes that can be obtained by arranging the information and parity bits as a combination of rows and columns or by arranging them as two dimensional planes to obtain a three dimensional cube. Finding the number of errors detected and the numbers of errors corrected has been the main aim of this work. The code rate and the overhead of each scheme has been calculated and compared with that of the standard parity schemes available. Some general equations have been derived to represent these families of codes. A four dimensional scheme that can detect and correct more multiple errors has also been discussed.

With new applications being launched each day, the number of vulnerabilities to attack increases. Attackers find new ways to attack any application they come across. Some attacks are successful because the application is vulnerable due to the vulnerabilities in files assisting in the proper functioning of the application. Although the area of attacks is vast, buffer overflow attacks form the basis for most attacks. Hence it would be a great boon to the software industry if their products were made secure from buffer overflow attacks. This paper introduces a tool, which is used to locate vulnerable files, which in turn have been the root cause for buffer overflow.

Grid is becoming a new infrastructure for scientific computing and cooperative work, it becomes more important and urgent to provide grid workflow to construct and manage the grid applications. The grid workflow based on dynamic modeling and scheduling is presented, which consists of user portal, resource management component, grid services management, performance management, grid workflow engine, and its advantages cover the dynamic modeling according to changing grid running environment and dynamic scheduling adopting to the performance of grid system by performance evaluation and optimization. Then the prototype implemented on the Globus is introduced. Finally the experiments of genome sequencing based on shotgun algorithm are analyzed and the results are promising.

Health care is an important industry that touches most, if not all of us. In today's context of escalating costs in health care, managed care, regulations such as the Health care information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and a technology savvy patient, the health care industry can no longer be complacent regarding embracing technologies to enable better, more effective and efficient practice management. Our paper then, serves to outline an appropriate, feasible mobile solution to enable hospitals operate effectively and efficiently in today's competitive and costly health care environment as well as meet all the necessary regulatory requirements.
