The 3-layers of granularity model (LAG) have been introduced in A.I. Cristea and L. Calvi (2003) as a model for the adaptive behavior within adaptive hypermedia (AH). LAG is destined for authors of AH entering this process at the different levels of difficulty and flexibility: direct adaptation rules, adaptation language and adaptation strategies. The focus is on the different levels of the implied adaptation language grammars for conceptual structure and interface. We show their design, creation and implementation in MOT, an on-line adaptive hypermedia authoring system [MOT, http://***//spl sim/acristea/***]. We also show how the basic adaptation language can be extended by AH designers, via the adding of adaptive procedures.

GIS systems are ubiquitous distributed systems, since geo-spatial information adheres to almost everything. Considering the characteristics of GIS, the following four design-decision issues are particularly crucial: transactional mode (synchronous versus asynchronous), service granularity (finegrained versus coarse-grained), delivery manner (chunk versus stream), and transmission formats (GML versus binary). We have shared our experience in making choices in these four dimensions.

One important strategy in Socratic tutoring is the directed line of reasoning, in which the tutor asks a series of directive questions, to help the student follow a particular approach to the problem. The questions may contain useful information to assist the student in making the argument. If the student gets stuck, the tutor often supplies a hint. The result is an effective dialog with the student that helps students reason about the solution to a problem, while still feeling they are solving it themselves.

This paper describes an extension to the Internet backplane protocol (IBP), called content-addressable IBP (IBPCA). IBP is an important protocol in distributed, Web, grid and peer-to-peer computing settings, as it allows clients in these settings to access, manipulate and manage remote storage depots in a scalable and fault-tolerant fashion. Content-addressability adds the ability to reference storage by hashes of its contents. In this paper, we discuss the rationale behind IBPCA, important design decisions, and performance implications.

Models have been proposed to ensure the secrecy of data using various strategies. A number of these models however do not adequately address the problem of inference. This paper describes the design and implementation of a prototype that uses query modification along with security constraints to accurately return the proper information to the user whilst preventing unauthorized disclosure of data. The strategy works by augmenting a user's query with security constraints to ensure that the modified query is correct and safe in relation to the user's clearance level. The prototype is an implementation and extension of the query modification technique proposed by Keefe.

Modern database systems manage very large volume of database constraints. The cost spent in changing constraints is quite expensive because most of integrity requirements have dynamic specifications from applications domain with irregular and intermittent changes. The constraints maintenance can be motivated to scenarios changes that reach the integrity conditions of applications. In these changes, time is a main dimension to represent the boundary of integrity satisfiability in constraints. This article proposes a temporal modelling of variability characteristics in database constraints (survivability and applicability) to represent the time (instant or interval) effectively and efficiently when assertions must be used to enforce the data integrity.

Grid computing is a major research area with increasing impact on the business world. Substantial work has been spend on improving the grid middleware but the gap between the high expectations and available real-life grid applications is still remarkable. There is a significant emerging risk of creating a new hype, which may result in disillusion and disappointment. Therefore, we emphasise the urgency of providing reliable grid-based solutions - regardless of their scientific or commercial domain - in order to get grid computing to a mature state with wide-spread acceptance. An application prototype for editing and modelling grid workflows for semiprofessionals - as part of an approach for solving this problem - and a grid job example are described.

Wireless networks, specifically IEEE 802.11, are inexpensive and easy to deploy, but their signals can be detected by eavesdroppers at great distances. Even with existing and new security measures, wireless networks have a higher risk than wired nets. WIDS, wireless intrusion detection system, provides an additional layer of security by combining intrusion detection with physical location determination, using directional antennas. We briefly describe WIDS and present our initial results of remote station location using inexpensive hardware.

When designing a secure Internet version for keno or bingo for a large group of players, a multicast communication model is likely to be used for source-to-players communication. For a large group of players, this can potentially overwhelm the source, a problem which is known as implosion. We present a scheme for large-scale bingo which avoids implosion in the many-to-one communication between the players and the hall. The resulting scheme aggregates information using a probabilistic public-key additive privacy homomorphism and guarantees the security of communications.

In this paper we present a topology viewer for the NaradaBrokering system. The NaradaBrokering system comprises a distributed network of cooperating broker nodes organized within a logical overlay network. The topology viewer's layout algorithm is implemented such that it augments the structure of the NaradaBrokering network. Furthermore, we believe that this approach could also be applied to similar visualization problems. Our visualization scheme extends recent work in the visualization of large hierarchies with primary focus on algorithmic and visual simplicity. Specifically, we have modified the ringed layout algorithm for placement of various NaradaBrokering components in order to achieve navigational efficiency. We also include performance measurements in this paper.
