We present a general algorithm to design fast parallel multipliers in any basis over GF(2/sup m/), avoiding any basis-dependent procedure or "ad hoc" optimization, as usually proposed in literature. Although the total number of gates is not guaranteed to be the absolute minimum, the algorithm is aimed at minimizing the number of XOR gates, reaching the minimum for the AND gate number. For the sake of comparison, lower and upper bounds to space and time complexities have been explicitly evaluated. As a significant example, for several in of practical interest, the algorithm has been applied to Gaussian normal basis parallel multipliers.

We develop a financial knowledge management system, known as FAM, which is able to digest online news and conduct financial activity mining. Financial online news articles are automatically fetched from the Web. By analyzing the text content, metadata capturing major attributes such as company names and people names are automatically extracted. The metadata together with content terms are processed to mine financial activities via an unsupervised learning algorithm. FAM is capable of dealing with multilingual news including English and Chinese.

The mobile enterprise faces unique legal, security, ethical and technical risks as well as concerns that also apply to traditional businesses. This paper reviews the impact of warchalking and wardriving in a legal and security context with a view to formulating technical and legal policy suggestions for technologists, scientists, managers and government policy makers. To assist in addressing these problems, the researchers have developed a preliminary mobile enterprise security and legal (MELS) framework. It is adapted from the network security wheel and the confidentiality, integrity and availability (CIA) security model. This paper outlines the types of threats that impact on the mobile enterprise and illustrates the reactions from international and national legal communities.

The significant computational overhead associated with the iterative reconstruction process of biomedical optical imaging is one of the major factors that hinder its application in clinical diagnosis, especially for large tissue volumes. Based on previous studies, the paper presents a general purpose biomedical optical image reconstruction model along with components and data flow diagram, and proposes a modified model taking into account the information feedback during the iterative image reconstruction process to control the image resolution in the subdomain of interest, and hence to detect interior targets, such as tumors, from the discrete measurements collected on the surface of clinically relevant tissue. The modified image reconstruction model (MIRM) may provide a means to detect small targets and improve the image quality at relatively low computational cost.

This work discusses a conceptual model for automatic acquisition and processing of knowledge about users and devices in computer networks. It employs autonomous agents for distributed knowledge management and integrates them into an autonomic middleware component. Agents grouped into distributed communities act as mediators between users, devices, and network resources. Communicating between each other they make decisions on whether a certain user or device can be given access to a requested resource. In other words, agents in our system perform user/device authentication, authorisation, and maintenance of user credentials.

We introduce a hierarchical tree representation to represent the logical structure of a form document. Different forms might have the same logical structure, so the representation will be ambiguous. We propose an improvement to solve the ambiguity problem by using the physical information of the blocks. A pixel tracing approach is used to extract form layout structures from form documents. Compared with Hough transform, it requires less computation. This algorithm has been tested on 50 different table forms. The algorithm applies to table form documents.

Knowledge personalization is currently the most investigated issue in the context of service-oriented systems. Knowledge representation and management are the subtended critical issues for knowledge personalization, and currently they are largely studied, principally thanks to the explosion of data modelling technologies such as XML and XMLSchema. Despite to some progress, currently, a widely approved standard for delivering knowledge is still missing. In this paper, we propose the definition of distributed knowledge networks (DKN), an open framework for delivering personalized knowledge. We also provide a reference architecture for DKN networks.

In this paper, joint conditional probability is localized to better capture the local properties of a neighborhood for image segmentation. A new local spatial likelihood is defined for a neighborhood, which gives rise to local spatial posterior associated with the defined local prior. The proposed method associates a novel nonparametric approach for estimating the underlying distributions and is compared with a parametric approach. Both approaches segment images by maximizing the local spatial posterior function. The results indicate that the spatially localized posterior function overcomes the inherent errors of general posterior function and gives remarkable robustness against heavy noises.

This study analyzes the effects of attitudes and experience on the search process. Ninety-seven participants sought answers to six information requests by conducting searches in a controlled Web environment. Our findings show that computer anxiety had a negative effect on the participants' search performance, their confidence in the correctness of their answers, and their satisfaction with the search process, and a positive effect on the amount of time spent on the search tasks. The participants' perceptions of their ability to perform search tasks and their prior search experience were both highly correlated with confidence, but ultimately were irrelevant to their actual performance. These findings, coupled with results from earlier studies, highlight the need for search interfaces that reduce anxiety by supporting users throughout the search process.

We present a study of existing peer-to-peer systems and suggest a preliminary solution for implementing a file-sharing application for use by small trusted groups of users, for example 50-200 nodes. We review existing literature on peer-to-peer systems, and application examples of peer-to-peer architectures. We describe two models. One estimates the expected number of query results in a hybrid data-sharing peer-to-peer system, the other determines file replication needs for ensuring file availability for small numbers of users. We use information obtained from these models to design a file sharing system for small numbers of users.
