We propose a new image enhancement algorithm INDANE (integrated neighborhood dependent approach for nonlinear enhancement of color images), which is applied to improve the visibility of the dark regions in digital images. INDANE is a combination of two independent processes: luminance enhancement and contrast enhancement. The luminance enhancement, also regarded as a process of dynamic range compression, is essentially an intensity transformation based on a specifically designed nonlinear transfer function. The contrast enhancement transforms the pixel's intensity based on the relationship between the center pixel and its surrounding pixels. For color images, they are firstly converted to intensity (grayscale) images, and then are treated by the proposed image enhancement process.

Web portals offer many services and wealth of content to Web users. However, most users do not find interest in all the content present in these sites. Most of them visit some specific sites and browse in specific thematic areas of them. In this paper, a software technique is presented that allows the viewers of Web sites to build their own personalized portals, using specific thematic areas of their preferred sites. This transcoding technique is based on an algorithm, which fragments a Web page in discrete fragments using the page's internal structure. A training and update procedure is used for identifying the different instances of thematic areas in different time points.

With the increasing popularity of JPEG images, a need arises to devise effective watermarking techniques which consider JPEG compression as an acceptable manipulation. In this paper, we present a semi-fragile watermarking scheme which embeds a watermark in the quantized DCT domain. It is tolerant to JPEG compression to a pre-determined lowest quality factor, but is sensitive to all other malicious attacks, either in spatial or transform domains. Feature codes are extracted based on the relative sign and magnitudes of coefficients, and these are invariant due to an important property of JPEG compression. The employment of a nine-neighborhood mechanism ensures that non-deterministic block-wise dependence is achieved. Analysis and experimental results are provided to support the effectiveness of the scheme.

Peer-to-peer grids is a new trend in scientific computing and collaboration. It is based on the peer-to-peer and grids technologies and leverages the advantages of both. We develop our collaborative PowerPoint and IE (Internet Explorer) applications with a common peer-to-peer grid architecture. We make NaradaBrokering as our dynamic messaging environment and systematic use of Web Services as one type of our building blocks. Making PowerPoint and Internet Explorer applications collaborative using their event meta data and instant message as Web services is useful in situations such as long distance education [Geoffrey Fox] and Web conferencing. This is also a good demonstration of harnessing and leveraging of the power and richness of Web services and peer-to-peer grids computing.

The current state of the art in the existing middleware technologies does not support the development of distributed applications that need processes to complete a task collaboratively. What is needed in the next generation of middleware is a synergy of heterogeneity, distribution, communication, and coordination. We are proposing to augment the existing middleware technologies to provide collaboration support through a multiparty interaction (MI) protocol rather than design a new programming language for distributed coordinated programming. A 4-layered interaction model will be presented to decouple the applications and their underlying middleware implementations including coordination protocols by providing a set of generic interfaces to the applications. The decoupling of applications and middleware technologies by isolating computation, communication, and coordination promotes reuse, improves comprehension, and eases maintenance due to software evolution.

In this paper, a Generic Automated Marking Environment (GAME) is proposed for assessing student programming projects and exercises with an aim to facilitate student-centred learning. GAME has been designed to automatically assess programming assignments written in a variety of languages. The system has been implemented in Java and contains marker modules that are tailored to each specific language. A framework has been set in place to enable easy addition of new marker modules to extend the system's functionality. Currently, the system is able to mark programs written in Java and the C language. To use the system, instructors are required to provide a simple "marking schema" for any given assessment item, which includes pertinent information such as the location of files and the model solution. GAME has been tested on a number of student programming exercises and assignments providing encouraging results.

The goal of steganography is to avoid drawing suspicion to the transmission of a hidden message in multi-medium. This creates a potential problem when this technology is misused for planning criminal activities. In this paper, a new steganalysis technique is proposed on the basis of histogram analysis on the wavelet coefficients for the detection the very existence of wavelet domain information hiding techniques. And our approach lays particular stress on methods in which secret message was embedded via quantizating wavelet coefficients. Different statistical discrepancies are obtained by histogram analysis of sub-band wavelet coefficients from stego-images and innocent images. And FFT of these discrepancies are used to form a quantitative criterion to determine whether an image has been embedded secret message or not. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is comparable to previously existing techniques.

The upcoming H.264/MPEG-4 advanced video coding (AVC) video compression standard promises a significant improvement over all previous video compression standards. We study the impact of low delay constraint on the rate control algorithm proposed for AVC, and show that the performance of AVC rate control is degraded under such low delay constraint. This results in PSNR degradation and many skipped frames. We then propose an improved rate control scheme to effectively allocate the number of bits and monitor the buffer fullness. Simulation results show that our proposed rate control scheme encodes the video sequences with less frame skipping and with higher PSNR compared to rate control for AVC.

A huge quantity of Earth observation and geospatial data is produced daily by numerous satellites launched by several worldwide space agencies. The processing of remote sensing data requires several steps, some of which are computationally intensive. The extraction of prominent information from remote sensing data requires a coordinated use of many applications and algorithms. Sharing computational resources among different scientists represents the sole way to approach the problem in order to achieve good performance. We describe a problem solving environment for remote sensing data processing layered on grid technologies. The proposed architecture allows sharing resources among different organizations taking into account each access policy defined by the owner of the resource.

This paper presents a micropayment-based architecture for P2P content distribution networks using the lightweight currency protocol. Under this architecture, autonomous peers form a dynamic overlay network that evolves as peers buy and sell documents with the lightweight currency protocol (LCP). By adopting a payment-based system, member peers are forced to contribute resources in order to obtain benefits, thus eliminating the free-rider problem. We present a document search mechanism that is based on bidding, with the use of micropayments.
