The increasing number of requirements for a Web information system asks for an engineered process in designing such a system. In this paper we focus on two of these requirements: presentation adaptation based on user preferences/device capabilities and reusability of the different design artifacts. Hera is a model-based design methodology for Web information systems. Adaptation and reuse can be tackled at different design levels in Hera. We illustrate by means of examples how adaptation and reuse can be achieved in the conceptual model, the application model, and the presentation model. Based on a static user profile, adaptation is realized by attaching appearance conditions to model elements. With respect to reusability we do focus on one mechanism that supports it, namely inheritance.

The Web-based mathematics education framework (WME) aims to create a Web for mathematics education. WME empowers mathematics teachers, learning content developers, as well as dynamic mathematics computation and education service providers, to deliver an unprecedented mathematics learning environment to students and educators. Main WME components include the Mathematics Education Markup Language (MeML), the MeML processor (Woodpecker, browser plug-in), and on-Web Mathematics Education Services. MeML provides effective and expressive markup elements to represent and structure mathematics education pages that may also contain XHTML and MathML elements. Woodpecker enables regular Web browsers to process MeML pages and to interact with a wide variety of mathematics computation and education services deployed on the Web.

An example of an enhanced reality user interface uses aspects of the real world and simulated computer perception to yield a simplified user interface. The common application solitaire is considered as the base application. The augmented input scheme uses hand gestures, in particular those that would be used if playing the game with real cards. An augmented output scheme uses audio, especially voice descriptions of cards and relative hand positions, in three dimensions. The result is a game that is playable by anyone using any flat surface with no actual cards and no need to touch or look at the computer. A large class of interfaces can profit from these ideas, and visually impaired users have expanded access to existing systems.

The advancement in the utilization and technologies of the Internet has led to the rapid growth of grid computing; and the perpetuating demand for grid computing resources calls for an incentive-compatible solution to the imminent QoS problem. This paper examines the optimal service priority selection problem that a grid computing network user confronts. We model grid services for a multisubtask request as a prioritized PERT graph and prove that the localized conditional critical path, which is based on the cost-minimizing priority selection for each node, sets the lower bound for the length of cost-effective critical path that commits the optimal solution. We also propose a heuristic algorithm for relaxing the nodes on the noncritical paths with respect to a given critical path.

Web applications using the XML technologies are increasingly popular. Besides caching, another query performance improvement approach is prefetching. Similar to other database queries, XML queries often have their own query patterns. We present a preprocessing algorithm that extracts abstract queries from similar query constructs but with different constraints values. These abstract queries help to produce useful access patterns by applying association mining on them. Through our preliminary experiments, we found that our prefetching approach improved both the cache hit ratio and precision of the XML cache system.

We concern choices that were made during the analysis phase of the ARts-Netlantic project, specifically the database system analysis where digital files are associated to most of the entries in this database. A digital file can be an image, a video, an audio or a text relating to artists and the works of art. Many approaches have been evaluated on how those digital files ought to be inserted in the database. Moreover all digital resources are described with consistency and accuracy. Our research lead us to describe the works of art using the Dublin Core standard and later to use XML to complement those missing attributes that were necessary to adequately describe new media art. The project is under construction, but the way the search engine and the insertions are going to be implemented is discussed.

The next wave of information systems to be deployed over wide-area networks features data sources residing on handheld devices, laptops, and other types of small-sized devices. Therefore, it is necessary to have middleware systems for data and resource integration that efficiently integrate clients and data sources residing on PDAs, laptops, embedded systems, and enterprise machines that are spread over a WAN. In this paper, we give an overview of the architecture of the NetTraveler system that we are building for just these purposes. We present the algorithms and schemes that we have developed to: 1) help applications self-configure with the parameters needed for their normal operations, 2) automatically register value-added services, and 3) discover connectivity metadata about available services over a cooperative system that spawns a WAN.

information in XML format has obvious redundancy that wastes disk space, bandwidth and disk I/O when querying XML data. For the efficiency of storage and query XML, it is necessary to compress XML data. In this paper, XCpaqs, a compression technology of XML, is presented. XCpaqs separates XML document into structure and context information. At the same time, it keeps homomorphism relation between compressed and original XML document. XCpaqs encodes tag and path respectively. It makes parts of XPath query could be processed in main memory. XCpaqs can recognize data types and uses different encode strategy to compress data with different type. This feature makes the technology support XML documents without schema information. Therefore, XCpaqs is adaptive for XML warehouse, which stores XML documents gathered from internet with various schemas. The technology of query execution on XML data compressed by XCpaqs is also presented.

The MESSENGER trajectory database provides an informative and captivating means of depicting the planned trajectory and mission plan for NASA's MESSENGER Mercury Orbiter Discovery mission scheduled to launch in 2004. The database comprises state of the art in information retrieval techniques to effectively serve the MESSENGER development and operations team, educators, students, broadcast media, and the general public. In addition, database contains features to minimize site maintenance through automation and the creation of standard format files during development and post-launch operation. In this paper we discuss the design and implementation of the MESSENGER trajectory database. In particular, we discuss the architectural design and its integration with NAIF's SPICE toolkit using, XML and J2EE technologies.

We study the problem of how a user at an untrusted terminal can generate digital signatures with the help of a smart card. This problem may arise in many practical applications; an example would be a user generating an electronic check at a merchant's terminal in a shop. The danger is that the terminal can obtain a signature from the card on an arbitrarily chosen document, that is different from the one displayed on the screen and confirmed by the user. We propose a solution to this problem which is based on a new concept called conditional signature. This leads to a new paradigm where digital signatures are not considered as non-repudiable proofs, at least until a short deadline.
