Image compression techniques are routinely applied to conserve storage space and minimize bandwidth utilization in various video and communication applications. Wavelet transform is an efficient approach to reduce spatial redundancies without the annoying blocking artifacts at low bit rates. The underlying signal processing used in wavelet transform is the convolution between the decimated input signal and the wavelet filters. Since image signals are not continuous at the boundaries, problems of coefficient expansion and boundary distortion are faced in the implementation of the filtering on the finite length signal. Circular convolution instead of linear convolution can eliminate coefficient expansion but introduce boundary artifacts, especially when more levels of decompositions are involved to obtain scalable images. Symmetric-extended wavelet transform (SWT) introduced in this paper can greatly reduce boundary artifacts with improved performances in scalable image compression in comparison with the periodic-extended wavelet transform and the JPEG compression.

Impression-based retrieval of multimedia content is the best way of finding items that suit the preferences, feelings, or mental states of users. This kind of system presents a relatively short set of words that denotes impressions and users estimate one or more words from this with a graphical user interface (GUI) to input into the system. With this approach, an increased number of words presented leads to increased costs for the user, in terms of the time and labor required to enter impressions. Conversely, a set of words that is too limited will often leave users unable to accurately represent their target impressions. We therefore compare the accuracy of retrieval and convenience of using an NLI (natural language interface) and GUI, which we introduced into an impression-based music-retrieval system. The results reveal their respective advantages and disadvantages, and suggest guidelines on the design of a better NLI.

We investigate hypertext repositories with automatically generated hyperlinks among paragraphs. The algorithms that generate the links yield results with significant common characteristics despite large differences among the algorithms. Furthermore, different repositories, generated by the same algorithms show significant common characteristics, although generated from the return lists of different search engines. Finally, repositories generated for different domains also have common characteristics. This suggests that these characteristics are pervasive properties of judiciously retrieved document sets. The common characteristics revolve around a tendency for some documents (the kernel) to be destinations of a disproportionately high fraction of the hyperlinks in the repository. An emergent property of such repositories with practical significance is that browsing activities will have a tendency to trap the user within the kernel, perhaps without their realizing it. To enable users to choose to avoid trapping, we propose a ring structure for hypertext repositories which is exposed to the user by annotations to the hyperlinks.

Advances in wireless network technology and the increasing use of number of handheld mobile devices make many services and applications necessary to be offered to mobile users. An event notification service (ENS) system is an extremely useful communication service for those applications. Therefore, it becomes necessary to extend ENS system to a mobile environment. A distributed ENS system is an asynchronous system consisting of several subsystems, namely, producer clients, consumer clients and servers without common memory and global clock. The subsystems communicate each other by sending messages with unpredictable transmission delays causing unordered propagation of messages. We describe a model of ENS system for mobile environment. Then we present a causal ordering algorithm of ENS systems for mobile environment.

The word positions for any given word in the whole collection are arranged in clusters. If we can use the method that can take advantage of clustering, excellent results can be achieved in compression of inverted file. However, the mechanisms of decoding in all the well-known compression methods that can exploit clustering are more complex, which reduce the ability of searching performance in information retrieval system (IRS) at some degree. We proposed a new method that can facilitate coding and decoding of interpolative code by using the simply applied and high-speed models such as /spl gamma/ code and Golomb code in d-gap technique. This new method can exploit clustering well, and the experimental results confirm that our method can provide fast decoding speed and excellent compression efficiency.

A new approach for non-blind watermarking of still gray level images in the wavelet domain. The method uses the human visual system (HVS) characteristic, and an innovative entropy based approach to create an efficient watermarking scheme is presented in this paper. It decomposes original image in DWT domain in to three hierarchical levels and watermarks it with a logo image, which is scrambled thru a well-known PN-sequence. An entropy-based method is developed for selection of DWT coefficients that provides an adaptive way for determining the number of watermarked coefficients and watermarking factor at each level of DWT decomposition. This approach shows an excellent resistance against almost all the attacks known in the watermarking literature. The detection results of the method reveal better resistance in comparison to the existance methods. With simple modifications, the method can be used for color images and in real time systems.

Multicasting is well known as a bandwidth conserving technology. Applications couldn't exploit broadcast media property or reduce redundant packets' movement over common paths of network as the applications are written in unicast mode. This is due to complex multicast application programming support and the high abstraction TCP/IP provides over the underlying physical media. Researchers turned to alternate multicast mechanisms like application layer multicast-ALM, where in participating hosts are arranged in overlay topologies like tree, mesh etc and hosts route data among themselves in normal unicast mode. We discuss a new application layer overlay&APPCAST and show common application architecture for both unicast and multicast using SOAP with no special effort from programmer for multicast. Architecture also allows exploiting broadcast nature of media.

With the ever increasing amount and variety of data to be stored and transmitted in various mediums, the specification of security which has to be established at various levels of medium access and the accompanying issues of authentication and authorization has become a critical factor. Various steganographic, watermarking and data-embedding algorithms have usually manipulated the actual data in order to either hide any coveted information or to provide some level of access control over the medium. The mediums are usually images, video, audio etc., wherein specific portions or the overall space is usually 'corrupted' with 'significant' data. We attempt to bring out the significance of the steganographic techniques that are employed in information processing algorithms for data security. It deals with the problem of data security, focusing mainly on images, and tries to state the various properties and characteristics that the steganographic algorithms should possess. We also highlight the technique of masking used in the conventional steganographic LSB algorithms and in its variants.

This paper presents an enhanced cell visiting probability (CVP) estimation technique by integrating both mobility parameters such as position, direction, and speed together with exponential call duration probability of mobile units. These improved CVP estimates can be used in both adaptive and nonadaptive mobile networks to enhance QoS parameters. This paper also presents a new shadow-clustering scheme based on these enhanced CVPs, which is then applied to the call admission control scheme similar to the one, called predictive mobility support QoS provisioning scheme, proposed by Aljadhai and Znati (2001). Simulation results confirm that this new shadow-clustering scheme outperforms predictive mobility support QoS provisioning scheme in terms of different QoS parameters under various different traffic conditions.

Data dissemination by broadcast is the most cost-effective and scalable solution for the asymmetric mobile environment. Usually, data objects in periodic broadcast schedule are interleaved with index information to help mobile hosts (MHs) minimize their channel tuning time. On the contrary, presence of index information increases broadcast cycle length and hence the mean response time of MHs. There are many scheduling algorithms in literature which optimize either mean response time or tuning time or both (at least for suboptimal solution). We propose a novel on-demand broadcast algorithm, named NICD (normalized intercluster distance), which eliminates the need for indexing the broadcast schedule by enabling MHs compute the required index information themselves. Rural health care (RHC) system is just one application of the proposed algorithm. Simulation-based experiments are carried out with synthetic data, and it is observed that it effectively eliminates the need for indexing at the computational overhead of O(N/sup 2/), where N is the number of clusters present in the collected information; and this is insignificant when compared against communication overhead due to the presence of index.
