In mobile computing environments, many real life applications involve transaction processing with temporal data objects which are updated periodically by external environment. Transaction in temporal database not only has to meet the transaction deadline, but also the data deadline of temporal objects. Traditional concurrency control algorithms used in real-time database are no longer suitable for temporal database. In this paper, a new optimistic concurrency control algorithm, OCC-AVI is devised for processing mobile read-only transactions with the above deadline requirements. Based on the absolute validity interval (AVI) information, read-only transactions at mobile clients can autonomously choose to read a valid value of a temporal object from local cache or pull an updated value from the server. Experimental results show that OCC-AVI can significantly improve the system performance.

Today's workforce is becoming increasingly mobile. Handheld devices have evolved into indispensable enterprise tools, which enhance the mobile knowledge workers' ability to remain connected and productive. A WPAN (wireless personal area network) is intended for mobility and simple, short-range point-to-point communication with personal devices. The usage of Bluetooth wireless network technology is growing as it exploits low-cost, power efficient radio technology to support both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint connections. However, knowledge workers may find out that Bluetooth devices work with some products and not with others. We report on compatibility and interoperability issues experienced during the setting up of a mobile enterprise Bluetooth and WLAN Laboratory at the University of technology in Sydney. It examines whether Bluetooth could be an adequate mobile solution in m-enterprises.

With the explosive increase in Web based information, the need for an intelligent agent for automatic classification has also been increased resulting in many research discoveries in this area. Machine learning (ML) based document classification is now the prevalent approach. However, classification by ML may not keep the same performance because the knowledge generated from the training set may not be appropriate for certain types of Web information. People are often concerned more about the newly uploaded information such as Web based online news than information already available. This explains why it is not widely used in real applications. However, the manual classification method, by the domain users, cannot be a solution either until the knowledge acquisition bottleneck issue is resolved. Multiple classification ripple down rules, an incremental knowledge acquisition method, is suggested to overcome this problem with fast learning and low cost maintenance.

The entropy of normalized partial distortions, referred to as the partial distortion entropy, is a very useful metric for online optimality evaluation of a vector quantization code-book. However, it is computationally expensive to update the partial distortion entropy so that it adapts to the changes in a codebook. Hence, its naive computation results in considerably increasing the cost of vector quantization code-book design, especially in the case of a large codebook. This paper presents a novel scheme of the partial distortion entropy updating. The proposed scheme is devised to update the partial distortion entropy without fully recalculating it. Therefore, the scheme requires much less computation than the recalculation, and its computational cost is constant irrespective of a codebook size. Experimental results clearly show that the proposed scheme is significantly effective for saving the computational cost of vector quantization codebook design with the partial distortion entropy.

The requirement of a Web crawler that downloads most relevant pages is still a major challenge in the field of information retrieval systems. The use of link analysis algorithms like page rank and other importance-metrics have shed a new approach in prioritizing the URL queue for downloading higher relevant pages. The combination of these metrics along with a new metric called association-metric has been proposed. The association-metric estimates the semantic content of the URL based on the domain dependent ontology, which in turn strengthens the metric that is used for prioritizing the URL queue. In addition, after downloading the page, the association metric plays important role in estimating the relevancy of the links in that page. The proposed new metric solves the major problem of finding the relevancy of the pages before the process of crawling, to an optimal level.

As various applications of wireless ad hoc network have been proposed, security has become one of the big research challenges and is receiving increasing attention. In this paper, we propose a distributed key management and authentication approach by deploying the recently developed concepts of identity-based cryptography and threshold secret sharing. Without any assumption of prefixed trust relationship between nodes, the ad hoc network works in a self-organizing way to provide the key generation and key management service, which effectively solves the problem of single point of failure in the traditional public key infrastructure (PKI)-supported system. The identity-based cryptography mechanism is applied here not only to provide end-to-end authenticity and confidentiality, but also to save network bandwidth and computational power of wireless nodes.

Nodes in the grid can be connected through a multigigabit network. However, the network interfaces in the nodes can become a bottleneck for the maximum achievable bandwidth among nodes. We propose an extensible communication architecture to avoid the limitations of the network interfaces by integrating multiple network interfaces in each node. The proposed solution deploys a technique to balance the network traffic load among multiple network interfaces in a single node. While this technique enhances communication bandwidth among the nodes, it is distributed and does not require any coordination or reservation mechanisms. It achieves the maximum possible bandwidth between any pair of grid nodes with multiple network interfaces. The experimental evaluation provided good results and demonstrated the benefits of the proposed architecture.

Association and aggregation are two relationship types in the object-oriented conceptual model (OOCM) that frequently involve collection of elements/attributes. However, very often when the relationships are stored in object relational database (ORDB) the collection is flattened like it is implemented by pure relational model. In this paper we propose the mapping methods to preserve the collection semantics in ORDB using collection data type. In aggregation we propose methods for different constraints types, while in association we propose methods for "many" cardinality (I:N, N:N) relationships. In addition, we also show how queries can be performed in the relationships using collection type.

Vector quantization with an adaptive codebook is attractive for lossy data compression. During the last few decades, architectures have been proposed to accelerate adaptive codebook design that requires a huge amount of computation. However, they are mainly based on Kohonen competitive learning algorithm or LBG algorithms that have an essential problem, the under-utilization problem. This paper presents a systolic memory architecture for highspeed codebook design based on MMPDCL algorithm not suffering from the under-utilization problem. We modify MMPDCL algorithm to exploit parallelism and implement with simple hardware. Simulation results demonstrated that the modified MMPDCL algorithm can give codebooks with comparable MSEs to the original MMPDCL algorithm.

In the original proposal of the NGE (nested generalized exemplar) system, the induction of a concept is based on an initial set of training examples (named seeds) that are randomly chosen. The number of examples in this set is arbitrary, generally determined by the user of the system. It can be seen empirically, that the final results are influenced by the initial choice of the seeds. We propose and investigate other alternative methods for choosing seeds and empirically evaluate their impact on the learning results in seven knowledge domains, as far as accuracy and number of expressions describing the concepts are concerned. In spite of the additional time investment associated with using a clustering method and, assuming that accuracy of the induced concept is of major importance, experiments have shown that choosing the initial set of seeds as the center of clusters can be the best option.
