Leveraging grid computing technology, i.e. the visualization of distributed computing and data resources such as processing, network bandwidth and storage capacity to create a single system image, we present a Grid Air Quality Forecast System (G-AQFS). The modeling system consists of meteorological and dispersion models coupled in cascade. The computational workflow of the modeling system is defined by means of DAGs (direct acyclic graph). A simple system is presented to manage and schedule the computational grid resources. As case study the system has been applied over Salento area, in the Apulia region (South-eastern Italy), to simulate ground level ozone concentration. Model predictions have been compared with field measurements, with reasonable results.

A solution to the online power system security analysis is presented. For complex networks this analysis requires large computational efforts whereas computation times should be less than few minutes for the information to be useful. Even though many architectures based on conventional parallel and distributed systems have been proposed in literature, none of them is able to furnish useful results for large electrical networks. To address this problem, a distributed Web-based architecture integrating a hierarchical grid system is proposed to implement a computational engine able to execute the power system state equations for large electrical networks. The grid system adopts a resource broker to satisfy the quality of service constraints specified by the user. The resulting framework, deployed on a network of heterogeneous clusters and PCs, is used to compute the contingencies analysis of a realistic electrical grid. The experimental results demonstrate that online security analysis can be executed in few minutes even for large network complexity.

A user's single session with a Web search engine may consist of seeking information on single or multiple topics. Most Web search sessions consist of two queries of two words. We present findings from a study of two-query search sessions on the Alta Vista Web search engine to examine the degree of multitasking search by typical Web searchers. A sample of two-query length search sessions were filtered from Alta Vista transaction logs from 2003. Findings include: (1) 81% of two-query sessions were multitasking searches; and (2) there are a broad variety of search topics in multitasking search sessions. The implications of our findings for Web design and further research are discussed.

We describe our progress extending the undergraduate computer science (CS) curriculum to include a deep understanding of data mining (DM). Instead of simply using tools involving DM, students build such a tool and learn the relevant algorithms implemented in these tools. Some novel approaches exist in our work. We include a hands-on lab setting where students use the tool they have built to perform experiments that could ultimately extend the field. Hence, undergraduates leave the course with knowledge of performing research in computer science using a scientific method. Additionally, we have a rigorous set of evaluation criteria developed by our colleagues in the psychology department that will assess how well students learn using our novel approach. We first developed and taught this course in the Spring of 2003. The evaluation results demonstrate a statistically significant improvement in the students' knowledge in this area.

The combination of multiple clusterings is a difficult problem in the practice of distributed data mining. Both the cluster generation mechanism and the partition integration process influence the quality of the combinations. We propose a data resampling approach for building cluster ensembles that are both robust and stable. In particular, we investigate the effectiveness of a bootstrapping technique in conjunction with several combination algorithms. The empirical study shows that a meaningful consensus partition for an entire set of objects emerges from multiple clusterings of bootstrap samples, given optimal combination algorithm parameters. Experimental results for ensembles with varying numbers of partitions and clusters are reported for simulated and real data sets. Experimental results show improved stability and accuracy for consensus partitions obtained via a bootstrapping technique.

Relevance feedback (RF) is a powerful technique in content-based image retrieval (CBIR) system and has become a very active research topic in the past few years. At the early stage of CBIR, research primarily focused on exploring various feature representation and ignored the subjectivity of human perception. There exists a gap between high-level concepts and low-level features. As an effective solution, the RF technique has been used on many CBIR systems to improve the retrieval precision. In this paper, a novel relevance feedback method is proposed to improve the retrieval performance of CBIR. By moving the query vector and updating the weighting factors simultaneously, the convergence speed of the relevance feedback retrieval is accelerated. Experimental results show that this method achieves high accuracy and effectiveness in CBIR.

This paper proposes a model for interleaving the execution of multiple queries simultaneously. The queries are rewritten, in the context of each other, in order to induce common subexpressions (CSEs). A CSE will then need to be evaluated once only and its result is used in the evaluation of the queries that contain it, thereby leading to cost saving over the conventional query-at-a-time scenario. Two important aspects characterize the proposed model. First, it rewrites the queries in such a way that the isolated CSEs are, themselves, heuristically efficient to evaluate during query execution. Second, it reduces the optimization overhead (due to query rewriting) by using a divide-and-conquer approach to deduce relationships among inter-query selection conditions on base relations while using only pattern matching to find relationships among higher-order subexpressions (those involving an arbitrary number of joins).

A new method for retrieving video segments from a digital video database is proposed. A unique signature for each video segment is generated from the analysis and tracking of interesting objects between each frame of the video region. The MPEG-7 descriptors based on N. Day and J.M. Martinez (2001) consisting of the edge histogram, homogenous texture, dominant colors and color structure (188 features in all) are extracted from corresponding objects in successive frames for the duration of the considered sequence. The average of the MPEG-7 descriptors is computed for each object across all frames in the region thus resulting in a unique signature for the region. The stored signature which best matches this new signature (based on the earth mover distance of Y. Rubner et al. (1997) between the signatures) is used for retrieving the video segment.

Emerging high bandwidth wireless infrastructure such as WiFi and Bluetooth networks make possible mobile applications that involve automated "conversations" between mobile devices and other land-based systems. By automated is meant that communication does not necessarily require human initiation or intervention. Such applications have been previously economically unviable on GSM/GPRS networks due to the costs per call and/or per data volume and technically challenging as providing for run-time flexibility in such communication poses semantic encoding difficulties. Nevertheless such applications are particularly well suited to mobile device interfaces, which have input and display limitations, as they minimize the required level of human user input. In this paper we propose a two-tier architecture for simple database-centric mobile applications, capable of such automated communication, that uses polymorphism to achieve run-time flexibility.

In recent years, frameworks are very popular as they provide reusable solutions to very difficult problems. However, the number of frameworks for a given domain makes it difficult to select the most appropriate framework. Selecting the wrong framework or selecting a framework that has not yet matured can be disastrous for a project. The choice of an application framework can make or break a project. Unfortunately, the lack of formal criteria and metrics to objectively compare/contrast frameworks, assess the framework's capabilities, and determine the framework's suitability to a particular project, make framework selection extremely difficult. Very little research has been conducted on determining the suitability of a framework. This paper defines criteria that can be used at a high-level to understand a framework's overall usefulness and at a low-level to understand the framework's suitability to a particular domain. The defined criteria of our approach are then used to determine the suitability of using an example framework.
