The texture segmentation techniques are diversified by the existence of several approaches. In this paper, we propose fuzzy features for the segmentation of texture image. For this purpose, a membership function is constructed to represent the effect of the neighboring pixels on the current pixel in a window. Using these membership function values, we find a feature by weighted average method for the current pixel. This is repeated for all pixels in the window treating each time one pixel as the current pixel. Using these fuzzy based features, we derive three descriptors such as maximum, entropy, and energy for each window. To segment the texture image, the modified mountain clustering that is unsupervised and fuzzy c-means clustering have been used. The performance of the proposed features is compared with that of fractal features.

An OGSA-based system, OGSA-WebDB, is proposed, which enables local database applications to query Web databases using a standard database query language (SQL). OGSA-WebDB consists of two main components: proxy databases and a mediator. Proxy databases represent the desired Web databases while the mediator acts as an interface between the proxy databases and the Web databases. The mediator accepts an SQL query from local applications and transforms the query into one or more Boolean conditions that are then sent to the target Web databases. The mediator processes the SQL query in parallel, taking into account the characteristics of the Web databases. Experimental results revealed that the query processing time is so small that it can be ignored for timing considerations. The system has been fully implemented on top of Globus Toolkit and OGSA-DAI software components.

In this paper, we present a novel encryption-less algorithm to enhance security in transmission of data in networks. The algorithm uses an intuitively simple idea of a "jigsaw puzzle" to break the transformed data into multiple parts where these parts form the pieces of the puzzle. Then these parts are packaged into packets and sent to the receiver. A secure and efficient mechanism is provided to convey the information that is necessary for obtaining the original data at the receiver-end from its parts in the packets, that is, for solving the "jigsaw puzzle". The algorithm is designed to provide information-theoretic (that is, unconditional) security by the use of a one-time pad like scheme so that no intermediate or unintended node can obtain the entire data. An authentication code is also used to ensure authenticity of every packet.

We present several ways to initialize and train hidden Markov models (HMMs) for gesture recognition. These include using a single initial model for training (re-estimation), multiple random initial models, and initial models directly computed from physical considerations. Each of the initial models is trained on multiple observation sequences using both Baum-Welch and the Viterbi path counting algorithm on three different model structures: fully connected (or ergodic), left-right, and left-right banded. After performing many recognition trials on our video database of 780 letter gestures, results show that a) the simpler the structure is, the less the effect of the initial model, b) the direct computation method for designing the initial model is effective and provides insight into HMM learning, and c) Viterbi path counting performs best overall and depends much less on the initial model than does Baum-Welch training.

Hyperlinks inside HTML pages contain a wealth of information about the relationships among Web pages. Given a set of Web pages, we can explore the hyperlink relationships among these pages. This paper first provides formal definitions of hyperlink relations. We then use the notations to define similarity between two Web pages and between two sets of Web pages. For each one of them, we provide several definitions of similarity using forward and backward links. The similarity measure gives us a number between 0 and 1. We also demonstrate how to use the similarity measure to study clustering within a set of pages and to determine the "diversity" of a set of Web pages.

A luminance dependent nonlinear image enhancement algorithm is proposed in this paper. Luma-dependent nonlinear enhancement (LDNE) is a luminance based multi-scale center/surround retinex algorithm, which achieves simultaneous dynamic range compression, color consistency and lightness rendition. Compared to other image enhancement algorithms, LDNE provides better color fidelity, specifies fewer parameters, enhances less noise, prevents the unwanted luminance drop at the uniform luminance areas, keeps the 'bright' background unaffected, and enhances well the 'dark' objects in 'bright' background. To support real time applications, an FPGA based co-processor is designed to perform some of the most computationally intensive operation in LDNE algorithm. Estimation techniques are introduced in the hardware algorithmic designed to achieve faster, simpler and more efficient architecture which is capable of processing more than 21 frames per second.

Parallel corpus is a very important tool to construct a good machine translation system or make any natural language processing research for cross language information retrieval. Internet archive is a good source of parallel documents in different languages. In order to construct a good parallel corpus from the Internet archive, bilingual dictionary that contains word pairs which may not exist in commercial dictionaries is a must. Extracting a bilingual dictionary from the Internet parallel documents is important to add words that are absent from the traditional dictionaries. This paper describes two algorithms to automatically extract an English/Arabic bilingual dictionary from parallel texts that exist in the Internet archive. The system should preferably be useful for many different language pairs. Like most of the systems done, the accuracy of our system is directly proportional to the amount of sentence pairs used. By controlling the system parameters, we could achieve 100% precision for the output bilingual dictionary, but the size of the dictionary is smaller.

In order to enhance the functions of IMCPs (the Product of Interactive Multimedia Creator) over Internet through streaming multimedia technology., in the paper, some methods are proposed to combine IMCPs with MPEG4 technology by which IMCPs could be translated to streaming multimedia and transferred over Internet, these methods include converting the file format of IMCPs' into MP4 format, revealing chinese characters, improving QoS, extending MPEG4's support streamType and so on. These technologies have been realized by presenting a process of both converting the products of Founder Author Tool into a kind of MPEG4 file format and building a corresponding streaming media player, which further enhances the content of Founder Author Tool's products by streaming multimedia technology. On the other hand, IMC (Interactive Multimedia Creator) software can painlessly produce MPEG4 contents without learning any new content development tools, and benefit from the international standard and its interoperability.

In a world made of interconnected systems that manage huge amount of confidential and shared data, security plays a significant role. Policies are the means by which security rules are defined and enforced. The ability of evaluating policies is becoming more and more relevant, especially when referred to cooperation of services belonging to untrusted domains. Here we have focused our attention on public key infrastructures (PKIs); at the state of the art security policies evaluation is expressed by means of security levels. However, policy evaluation must face uncertainty deriving from different perspectives, verbal judgments and lack of information. Fuzzy techniques and uncertainty reasoning can provide a meaningful way of dealing with these issues. We illustrate a fuzzy technique to evaluate the security level for a given policy against a set of reference policy levels.

Message passing interface (MPI) is an effective programming technique for implementing parallel programs for distributed computation. As these applications run, a number of different types of irregularities can occur including those that result from intrusions, user misbehavior, corrupted data, deadlocks or failure of cluster components. We perform a comparison of different artificial intelligence (AI) techniques that can be used to implement a lightweight monitoring and detection system for parallel applications on a cluster of Linux workstations. We study the accuracy and performance of deterministic and stochastic algorithms when we observe the flow of function library and OS system calls of parallel programs written with MPI. We demonstrate that monitoring of MPI programs can be achieved with high accuracy and in some cases with a 0% false positive rate in real-time, and we show that the added computational load on each node is small. Finally we demonstrate that simple deterministic methods perform poorly when the program flow grows in size and variety, and that more complex methods are required.
