In a computer network, network security is accomplished using elements like firewalls, hosts, servers, routers, intrusion detection systems, and honey pots. These network elements need to know the nature or anomaly of the worm in priori to detect the attack. Modern day viruses like Code red, Sapphire and Nimda spread very fast. For example, Sapphire can double its size and infect more than 90% of the vulnerable hosts within 10 minutes. Therefore it is impractical if not impossible for human mediated responses to these modern day fast spreading viruses. Several epidemic studies show that automatic tracking of resource usage and control is an effective method in containing the damage. In this paper we propose a state space feedback control model to detect and control the spread of these viruses by measuring the number of connections an infected host makes. The objective of the mechanism is to slow down the spreading velocity of a worm by controlling (delaying) the total number of connections made by an infected host. As expected, the model showed that the sooner the infection is detected the faster the reduction of the spreading velocity. Additionally, the deployment of a controller at different levels (host and firewall) has shown to be very promising.

This paper proposes an efficient face recognition scheme, which incorporates certain methods. In this scheme, edges are obtained from sobelled face images. The major feature areas are segmented and principal curves are obtained by applying thinning algorithm on the features of resulting face image. A modified thinning algorithm based on line sweep procedures is used. A line sweep is a process where the plane is divided into parallel slabs by lines passing through certain "events" and then items are processed according to an order of the slabs [A Line Sweep thinning Algorithm]. A new method for Bezier contour point interpolation is used after locating the two end points of the curve on the prime facial features. The two control points of a Bezier curve are interpolated by this method. The Bezier points i.e. the two end points of a curve and the two control points, form the line segments whose Hausdroff distances are calculated as specified in the algorithm discussed in this paper. The recognition rate is 100% on normal faces and also on faces with some simple expressions.

In this paper we describe the design of the TerraScope Image Navigator (TIN), the graphical user interface module of the TerraScope system. TerraScope is an Earth science data middleware system that was designed to facilitate collaboration among a set of data repositories (peers) who wish to provide their geo-spatial data thru an integrated portal. The base of the system is a distributed database that collects heterogeneous spatial data taken from satellite ground stations. TIN, as a component of TerraScope, retrieves images and related information from the distributed database and deals with the effective presentation of this kind of data to the user. TIN allows recursive navigation of the image space by dynamically embedding retrieved sub images as spatial hyperlinks inside other retrieved images. The TIN prototype was implemented using an interactive movie authoring environment (Flash MX) and XML (eXtensible Markup Language) to communicate queries and retrieve data and metadata from the server. As a result, we expect to port TIN to multiple platforms, including portable devices, with relative ease. Measurements using a small image database suggest result set rendering times in the order of a few seconds and response time 97% dominated by server computation.

Various ad hoc routing algorithms were proposed to increase the performance in ad hoc network. In order to estimate the performance of routing algorithms, they always simulate in ad hoc network environment, and a mobility model is also used for network simulation. There are two types of mobility models: trace and synthetic models. Trace models are more accurate than synthetic ones, and their simulation results are more accurate, too. However, new routing network environments are not easily modeled if traces have not yet been created. That is why most of the simulations are based on synthetic models. We implement, a tool for generating a special trace model, called ant mobility model. We mimic the ants' movements of an ant colony. The movement is similar to the workers in a store. We focus on the integration between the ant mobility model and the network environment. When users setup the parameters for generating an ant mobility model, the generated model can be used directly in the network environment. In order to illustrate the feasibility of ant mobility model, it is compared with the random waypoint mobility model based on the same routing algorithm, AODV, by using NS-2 simulator. Three major performance metrics, throughput, network latency, and control overhead message, are estimated. As we expected, these three metrics of the ant mobility model are better than that of the random waypoint mobility model. We suggest that a trace model, like ant mobility model, should be integrated quickly with the network environment in the same way.

This paper presents a TETRA based mobile telecardiology model. Design considerations to transmitting wavelet based compressed ECG data using TETRA are discussed. The performance of transmitting compressed ECG signals from a patient to a remote place (hospital or medical center) over TETRA network is evaluated in terms of BER and PRD. Frequency selective fading channels are considered during the simulation work. Results reveal the successful transmission of compressed ECG signal with low PRD and BER better than 10(-5).

A new Huffman coding and decoding technique is presented. There is no need to construct a full size Huffman table in this technique;instead, the symbols are encoded directly from the table of code-lengths. For decoding purposes a new Condensed Huffman Table (CHT) is also introduced. It is shown that by employing this technique both encoding and decoding operations become significantly faster, and the memory consumption also becomes much smaller compare to the normal Huffman coding/decoding.

The overabundance of DTV (Digital Television) programs precipitates a need for new tools to help people find programs and personalize TV viewing experience. In this paper(*), we present a multi-agent system that provides personalized and private service in PDRs (Personal Digital Recorders). This paper details the architecture and components of the system. The multi-agent system observes the users' viewing behaviors in the background, updates the users' profiles continuously, and provides different programs for different users according to their respective profile information. It can protect the users' privacy by means of utilizing XML encryption of the reported information and verifying the user's name and password before reporting his/her profile to service provider. This paper also describes the communication mechanism in the multi-agent system.

The current exponential growth of DTV programs precipitates a need for new filtering techniques to provide program personalization for people. Several filtering methods, notably Boolean filtering and Similarity-based filtering, have been proposed in information filtering. This paper first briefly describes architecture of program personalization, XML based metadata representation, and discusses Boolean and Similarity-based filtering, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Then a new hybrid filter is proposed. The hybrid filter consists of VSM based filtering, which is a Similarity-based filtering, and XML query filtering, which is a Boolean filtering. This hybrid filter is effective and efficient for program personalization in future DTV with local storage.
