Engaging undergraduate women in computer science is a difficult task. Women often enter computer science programs with less experience and hence less confidence than their male classmates. This disparity often leads the women to leave the field because they think they cannot compete. The result is that the male domination of the field continues. This paper describes a research program that has been designed to develop and enhance the education, abilities and experience of undergraduate women and to encourage them to embrace the field with enthusiasm and confidence. It also describes how research stemming from this program can be incorporated into the classroom.

The inherent problem of a variable-length code is that even a single bit error can cause loss of synchronization and may lead to error propagation. Synchronizing codewords have been extensively studies as a mean to overcome the drawback and efficiently stop error propagation. First we prove the restatement of a result originally given by B. Ruder (1971) in a more straightforward way. Next, we present the necessary conditions for the existence of a binary Huffman equivalent code with shortest synchronizing codeword(s). Finally, with the help of derived conditional equations, a unified approach for constructing a binary Huffman equivalent code with most shortest synchronizing codeword(s) and most other synchronizing codewords is proposed also.

We present an efficient algorithm called the Quadtree Heuristic for identifying a list of similar terms for each unique term in a large document collection. Term similarity is defined using the expected mutual information measure (EMIM). Since our aim for defining the similarity lists is to improve information retrieval (IR), we present the outcome of an experiment comparing the performance of an IR engine designed to use the similarity lists. Two methods were used to generate similarity lists: a brute-force technique and the Quadtree Heuristic. The performance of the list generated by the Quadtree Heuristic was commensurate with the brute force list.

Enterprise software infrastructure traditionally comprises a number of independent systems in order to support customer needs and business processes complicating productivity, performance and maintenance. Instead there are hypermedia facilities based on widespread standards that provide over a user-friendly, well-known framework richer functionality and features. In the paper, we present the design, implementation and evaluation of the combined use of Web services and adaptive Web-based techniques. We describe a large-scale hypermedia framework that improves the efficiency and performance of conventional enterprise activities like customer services (registration, activation, billing, support) and document management. The presented approach aims to cover these fundamental needs for a network of customers, collaborators and intranet employees.

Cluster-weighted modeling (CWM) is emerging as a versatile tool for modeling dynamical systems. It is a mixture density estimator around local models. To be specific, the input regions together with output regions are treated to be Gaussian serving as local models. These models are linked by a linear or non-linear function involving the mixture of densities of local models. The present work shows a connection between the CWM and generalized fuzzy model (GFM) thus paving the way for utilizing the concepts of probability theory in the fuzzy domain that has already emerged as a versatile tool for solving problems in uncertain dynamic systems.

As the number of remote sensing applications grows, more intensive is the demand in computationally effective and accurate procedures for spectral analyses. It is known that the computation cost increases with the number of features used for classification. For the maximum likelihood (ML) classifier, the increase is quadratic. Thus, the dimensionality of the initial data is to be reduced prior to analyzing data. In this paper, we propose a new feature extraction and selection method that combines effectiveness of wavelet multiresolution decomposition and the sequential forward floating feature selection (SFFS) technique. The method is used in a combination with the ML classifier. Experimental results show that the developed framework allows for accurate discriminating among similar land cover classes using only few features selected from the initial set of data.

This paper discusses the architecture and implementation of dynamic Web-based surveys with an emphasis on the recently completed Survey2001 project. Survey2001 was made available at the National Geographic Web site for several months starting October 2001 and could be taken in four different languages: English, German, Spanish and Italian. This paper discusses surveys and the advantages of Web-based surveys, lays the background for Survey2001, describes the details of the database used and the manner in which transitions were conducted in this dynamic Web-based survey. It also lists the results, including other surveys developed using the same database structure, and concludes with a look to the future.

Security is a major concern in mobile commerce where information is sent over the air. Authentication is possibly the most important property since achieving privacy and integrity may have no sense without the guaranty of the receiver identity. We propose a mobile architecture for strong personal authentication using mobile devices (cellular phones or PDAs) and wireless personal area networks (WPAN) like Bluetooth. The mobile device stores private information and performs cryptographic operations while WPAN connects mobile devices with access points. The risk of insecure wireless networks inclusion is studied and solved using suitable authentication protocols.

In this paper, we design a fast finite field cyclic convolution algorithm to improve the speed of wavelet cryptosystems on handheld devices. We propose an efficient polynomial multiplication algorithm of degree 7 to design a bilinear cyclic convolution of length 15 that is used in the wavelet cryptosystem. The number of multiplications of the bilinear cyclic convolution is significantly less than the prime factor and the direct method of convolution. We implemented both the wavelet cryptosystem of key length 256 and DES on a Palm OS platform. Our simulation results indicate that the wavelet cryptosystem is approximately 3.3 and 6.6 times faster than DES for encryption and decryption, respectively.

As mobile devices become more powerful and common there will a greater capacity and need for more complex interactions between mobile device-resident software and other server-based software. This can be termed mobile application integration. Mobile computing introduces new opportunities and challenges for application integration. Some of the challenges include small device size, limited bandwidth, limited processing power and lack of integration protocol support. Ad-hoc networks are those that can be formed temporarily while particular devices are in the vicinity of each other and ad-hoc mobile application integration refers to the temporary integration of software modules across devices while such a network exists. This case poses even greater challenges for integration such as dynamically changing combinations of platforms to be integrated across and a requirement for integration to occur dynamically. This paper proposes a novel Web Services-based system that allows such dynamic and temporary integration to occur in ad-hoc mobile networks.
