Despite high compression techniques for multimedia data transmission over mobile networks, there is need to have efficient routing to meet QoS requirements. This paper presents experimental study to optimize the routing for mobile users running multimedia applications. This approach is another milestone in providing best connectivity, to mobile users in any locations, whether wired or wireless. The approach is based on IP Mobility Support protocol (C. Perkins, 2002), which supports seamless switching between different networks and communication devices. The approach proposes a routing optimization solution, which ensures minimum possible delays in packet routing. The packet loss rates for switching from the wired to wireless and vice versa are investigated by simulations.

We present findings from a study of users performing multitasking searches on Web search engines. A user's single session with a Web search engine may consist of seeking information on single or multiple topics. Limited research has focused on multitasking search query session. The main objective of the study is to provide a detailed analysis of multitasking sessions. FAST search sessions were used to analyze multitasking Web searches. Findings include: (1) almost one third of FAST users perform multitasking Web searching; (2) multitasking sessions often included more than three topics per session; (3) multitasking sessions are longer in duration than regular searching sessions; and (4) most of the topic in multitasking searches were on general information, computers and entertainment.

Despite intensive research being conducted on the topic of adaptive filter design in general, adaptive filter design in the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) domain with specific constraints is still an active research area. We have developed a method for the design of a 2-channel perfect-reconstruction adaptive wavelet filter which is optimized under minimum energy constraints in specific bands. The optimal 2-channel conjugate quadrature filter (CQF) bank has been designed using sequential quadratic programming techniques for nonlinear, nonconvex functions in general, although finding a global minimum is not guaranteed. However, such a filter can be effectively used with a wavelet based image encoder for high fidelity transmission of large image data sets at low bit rates.

The most fundamental task in video processing is to partition long video sequences into a number of shots and find a key frame of each shot for indexing and browsing. In this paper, we want to extract key object(s) instead of key frame. In order to do that, we extend our previous technique for shot boundary detection (SBD) to select two candidate frames out of each shot, then propose a new framework to segment object(s) from those selected frames using color quantization and background adjustment. We make our scheme cost-effective and automatic by avoiding expensive computations, and removing manual processing. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme is promising.

The document representation is an important aspect of both information retrieval and information extraction. In this paper the bag of words representation of documents is enriched with lexical, conceptual and contextual relationships. In order to effectively represent and inference with this representation, a mathematical model is required. In this work, the enhanced interrelated set of bag of words that is semantically lattice of words is represented using description logic. The conceptual taxonomy extracted using WordNet can be represented naturally using DL. The DL also provides consistency, satisfiability, instance checking, subsumption services to semantically extend the initial enhanced lattice of words. The contextual knowledge can be extracted by syntactic patterns, dependency relations and heuristics. Tourist and sports domains are taken for the implementation of this work. This knowledge extracted and represented can be used in applications like information retrieval and information extraction.

Image compression techniques play a vital role in satellite and multimedia applications. Wavelet transforms have received significant attention recently due to their suitability for a number of signal and image compression applications and they have established their viability for the same. This is mainly due to the lapped nature of this transform and the computational simplicity, which comes in the form of filter bank implementations. In this paper, the performance of zero tree wavelet coders such as the Embedded Zero Tree Wavelet (EZW) coder, Set Partitioning In Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT) coder and Packetizable Zero tree Wavelet (PZW) coder for different levels of decomposition, compression ratios and for different percentage of packet losses are evaluated. PSNR is used as the criteria for the measurement of reconstructed image quality.

TACWeb (TAC images on the Web), is a Web-based Grid portal, developed at the CACT/ISUFI laboratory of the University of Lecce for the management of biomedical images in a distributed environment. TACWeb, building on top of the Globus Toolkit, is an interactive environment that deals with complex user's requests, regarding the acquisition of biomedical data, the "processing" and "delivering" of biomedical images, using the power and security of computational grids. Recently, Grid technologies are being integrated with Web services technologies to provide a framework for interoperable application-to-application interaction. In this paper we present an evolution of the TACWeb architecture that is compliant with the Web services approach and its main functionalities. In such a system, the basic capabilities are encapsulated and exposed as Web services allowing the development of new health applications as a composition of such services.

The MPEG-4 standard offers guidelines to compose video objects to get complete visual scenes. In order to extract video objects from the video content of a scene, image segmentation becomes a necessary first step in the MPEG-4 video coding. The watershed transformation is one of the basic tools in mathematical morphology, which is employed in image segmentation. Direct implementation of a serial watershed algorithm based on ordered queue is very slow and consumes a lot of resources. Faster implementation of the algorithm on a chip is difficult owing to a large amount of memory required. In this paper, we propose a modified algorithm which requires fifty times less memory compared to the original watershed algorithm by ordered queue, and is also suitable for hardware implementation. Simulation results have been furnished to validate the proposed algorithm. An architecture suitable for FPGA/ASIC implementation is also proposed.

The focus of this paper is the searching behavior in peer-to-peer (P2P) communities and in that context, will discuss potential for enhancement of the P2P protocol using searching behavior. Due to excessive network traffic, network scalability is a major P2P problem. The purpose of this paper is to study searching behavior by using log files and subsequently, will propose solutions to reduce the amount of redundant searching activities. In the current research, log data containing over 5 million query messages was collected over seven consecutive days using a Gnutella-based P2P program. The results of this study will be instrumental in providing ways to reduce existing problems with P2P network traffic.

In this paper, we present a performance analysis of WDM-based networks with nodal degrees ranging from 2 to 5. It is shown that the increase of the nodal degree from 2 to 3 leads to higher nodal degree gains, whereas the increase of nodal degree from 4 to 5 leads to small nodal degree gains. These results make degree 3 and degree 4 topologies very attractive for use in optical Internet backbones. It is also shown that there are several degree 4 topologies with smallest diameter (highest performance) and several topologies with a diameter slightly higher than the smallest diameter, which have a similar performance. The existence of these topologies increase the implementation flexibility of degree four topologies in the optical core of IP-over-WDM networks.
