Motion is an important cue for many applications. Here we propose a solution for estimating motion from a sequence of images using three algorithms, namely, batch, recursive and bootstrap methods. The motion derived using spherical projection relates the image motion to the object motion. This equation is reformulated into a dynamical space state model, for which a Kalman filter can be easily applied to yield the estimate of depth. We also propose a new approach for establishing correspondences using local planar invariants and hierarchical groupings. The proposed algorithm provides a simple yet robust method having lower time complexity and less ambiguity in matching than its predecessors.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Advanced Technological Education (ATE) project # DUE-9950029 is aimed to help increase the pool of qualified information technology (IT) teachers and workers in the USA. It addresses the severe national and statewide shortage of teachers and instructors in the IT area. While the growth in employment of all occupations in the USA IT industry between 1996-2006 is projected at 88.25%, the growth of college/university IT and computer science (CS) faculty is only projected at 18.3%. These findings motivated faculty of several USA educational institutions such as Bradley University and Midstate College (both, in Peoria, IL), Georgia Tech Regional Engineering Program (GREP) at Georgia Institute of technology (Savannah, GA), College of Applied Science at University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati State Technical and Community College (both, in Cincinnati, OH) to propose the NSF ATE project back in 1998 and complete it by 2003. This paper reviews project goals, project faculty development methods, evaluation of innovative courses and teaching technology and corresponding project team's findings.

In this paper, an advanced call admission control strategy is proposed in which bandwidth is allocated more efficiently and effectively to neighbouring cells by exploiting key mobility parameters to provide consistent Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees for multimedia traffic. Concomitantly, to ensure continuity of on-going calls with better utilization of resources, bandwidth is borrowed from existing adaptive calls without affecting the minimum QoS guarantee. The performance of the scheme is compared with other techniques including the rate-based borrowing scheme and implicit QoS provisioning strategy. Simulation results prove that this new scheme offers significant improvements in the requisite performance metrics of call blocking probability, call dropping probability, and bandwidth utilization, under a variety of differing traffic conditions.

In this paper, we present a dynamic load-balancing scheme in a networked heterogeneous computing environment and apply it to a Web-based scientific visualization system, whose efficiency requires a much stronger support than what is needed for visualizations merely on a single computer. To achieve the overall system resource utilization and to determine the most cost-effective strategy for such computing applications, we adopt a distributed asynchronous pipeline approach and a dynamic load-balancing algorithm at server side to distribute tasks among the whole system. To achieve efficient pipelining, it essentially requires a network with high bandwidth and low latency; an efficient interprocess communication mechanism on the network, and proper adaptation and partitioning of the visualization computations through the pipeline. By taking each client's capability into consideration, this dynamic approach can dispatch some stages of the visualization pipeline to client for executing. Besides, we also present a mechanism for selecting a computing unit that best suits for executing a specific visualization computation in the incoming job. We have demonstrated a number of static and dynamic configurations in task allocation and functional partitioning in order to realize the target application.

This paper presents a new watermarking technique in the spatial domain expressly devised for color images, which is based on transmit diversity techniques. The RGB tones of color images are considered as three independent slowly fading channels. Modulated by different pseudo-random sequences and interleavers, the same watermark in different forms is put into three color channels simultaneously. This scenario makes up the weakness in single color channel schemes that a single color channel is prone to severe fading. HVS characteristics of the three color channels are separately considered. We use two extraction methods: one is by comparing the energy strength of the three channels, the other is by accumulating the energy of three channels. Experimental results demonstrate the unmistakable advantage of our new approach over algorithms operating on single color channels. In contrast to the present spatial watermarking schemes, this algorithm is considerably robust to many intentional and unintentional attacks.

This paper describes efforts underway within Internet2 to create a secure federated IP based videoconferencing model. The objective is to create an environment that is user-friendly, ensures user privacy, and simplifies user management. This model makes use of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) as the underlying session establishment protocol. Since the session can (and most often will) be, between domains, securing the process will involve inter-realm authentication and authorization, which gives rise to a host of issues such as user privacy and authorization granularity. To address this issue, we make use of a federated trust model for sharing resources based on Shibboleth and the Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML), an XML-based security standard that describes the format and exchange of authentication and authorization information, such as identity, attributes, and artifacts.

We examine whether the use of query operators changes the documents retrieved by three popular Web search engines. One hundred queries containing query operators were selected from the transaction log of a major Web search service. The query operators were then removed from these one hundred advanced queries. Both the original and modified queries were submitted to three major Web search engines. A total of 600 queries were submitted, and 5748 of the documents retrieved were examined. Changes in the ranking of the top documents retrieved were examined. The significant results of our research are that the effectiveness of query operators is dependent on the specific search engine utilized, and that generally there is approximately 60% similarity between retrieved results across all search engines. Implications on the effectiveness of current searching techniques, for future search engine design, and of future research are discussed.

The rate at which information is produced in today's world is mind-boggling. The information is changing by every minute and today's corporate mantra is not "knowledge is power" but "timely knowledge is power". Millions of dollars are won or lost due to information or lack of it. Business executives and corporate managers push their technology managers to provide information at the right time in the right form. They want information on the go and want to be connected all the time to the Internet or their corporate network. The rapid advancement of technology in the field of miniaturization and that of communications has introduced a lot of roaming devices for people to connect through to the network like laptop, PDA, mobile telephones and many embedded devices. Programming for these devices was cumbersome and limited since each device supported its own standard I/O ports, screen resolution and had specific configurations. The introduction of Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) has solved this problem to some extent. J2ME is divided into configuration and profiles, which provide specific information to a group of related devices. Mobile telephones can be programmed using J2ME. With the mobility offered by the cellular telephones combined with electrical engineering many new uses can be found out for existing electrical machines. It will also enable remote monitoring of electrical machines and the various parameters involved in electrical engineering.

Object-oriented design and data structures is one of the most important courses in computer science, computer system engineering or computer information systems. Usually this class is taught in the second year of a four-year curriculum. This class should be taught in such a way that students get interested in learning real programming with the object-oriented approach. Students also know the basics of data structures and applications of data structures. If this class is not taught properly, students will drop out. This course is the main foundation for a programmer or computer scientist. This paper describes the experience of the author in designing and teaching an object-oriented design and data structures course at Arizona State University, USA for the last eight semesters. This paper also describes the goal of the course, which is to provide an in-depth understanding of the object oriented design and fundamental data structures and motivate students to become a programmer.

A new approach is proposed to solve the blocking artifact problem that results from block transform-based image compression at very low bit-rates. In our approach, we attempt to recover the quantization noise for the transform coefficients by adding uniform random noise to them. This results in a decompressed image that is corrupted by noise of the AWGN type, rather than a blocky image. This recasting of the blocking artifact problem into the domain of AWGN reduction allows any algorithm that has been developed for image denoising to now be a candidate solution for the blocky image problem. In this paper we present initial experiments for this novel approach, using a recently reported denoising algorithm. Results indicate that the algorithm offers both objective and subjective improvements to the blocky image. Additionally, the approach may be generalized to solve artifact problems in other transform domain-based image compression methods.
