The paper describes the Quantized Color Pack eXtension (QCPX) instruction set that can accelerate color-image processing applications. QCPX employs heterogeneous-subword-parallel instructions, which utilize the microprocessor's 16-bit wide datapaths to process a packed, quantized 16-bit color data type in YCbCr (Y: luminance, Cr and Cb: chrominance) format in parallel. Unlike typical multimedia instruction set extensions (e.g. MMX, SSE, ALTIVEC), QCPX obtains performance and code density improvements through implicit support for color pixel processing rather than depending solely upon generic subword parallelism. Five time-critical color image processing algorithms are coded with and without QCPX to fully measure its impact upon programming techniques. Simulation results indicate that the applications using QCPX achieve significant speedups in execution time over non-QCPX. In addition, QCPX results in higher system utilization (in excess of 94% in all cases) due to significant reduction of conditional instructions.

Hera is a design methodology that supports the development of Web information systems. It is a model-driven method that distinguishes four steps: data retrieval, application model generation, application model instance generation, and presentation data generation. Data retrieval populates the conceptual model with data. In the application model generation the navigational aspects of the application are specified in the application model. Also, the application model needs to be adapted for different user/channel profiles. In the third step of the Hera method, the application model is populated with the retrieved data. The last step considers the physical aspects of the presentation: the retrieved data wrapped in application logic is translated to different implementation platforms (e.g. HTML, WML, SMIL). Having in mind the advantage of Web application interoperability we chose to implement an experimental prototype for the Hera method using RDF(S), the foundation of the semantic Web.

PC clusters are becoming increasingly popular and important in the parallel computing community as a cost-effective alternative to expensive special designed parallel computers. The most popular communication interface used in PC clusters as well as other cluster-type parallel computers is MPI (Message Passing Interface). There are several different open-source MPI implementations freely available and most are based on the popular MPICH. In general, these implementations have similar basic functions and performance, but each package targets different environment with different communication libraries. In this paper we present our implementation and performance measurement of several available open-source MPI packages on a Linux cluster built with the OSCAR software package. We then compare the performance and discuss the factors that affect performance of these MPI implementations. Our target is building a PC-cluster for our research and development in the areas of SAN communication and parallel digital simulations.

In this paper, we discuss the preliminary results observed from a software analysis and design course offered in the following paradigms: traditional classroom, online, and augmented online classroom. Typically, in many universities, a software analysis and design class is a junior/senior level class with a significant technical/development content. In the classes analyzed there was an extensive writing component which involved a team project comprised of 2-3 students. Often such a class requires a student to be: (i) technically proficient in basic computing concepts and theories, (ii) have the ability to abstract and creatively solve problems of increased software complexity, (iii) have the ability to positively interact with other members and be a productive team member, and (iv) assume appropriate responsibility for specific technical development and documentation portions of the class project. In our student exit interviews and subsequent follow-ups with alumni, many students have indicated that these classes help them develop the necessary technical and social interaction skills that are crucial for real-world jobs. Understanding the factors that impact learning might assist in determination of the "effectiveness" of the different teaching paradigms.

To permanently keep and efficiently use data implied in curves on well-logging parameter graphs is becoming very important in the petroleum industry. In this paper, we contribute a system based on multi-agent technology to digitize well-logging curves and store the data into the Oracle database by means of an agent-based database broker. We employed some ideas of Gaia and Open Agent Architecture (OAA) to analyze and design the system. We applied the line adjacency graph (LAG) data structure to develop the image-compressing agent, which compresses image files with great efficiency. According to the characteristics of the well-logging parameter graph, the digitizing algorithms based on a centimeter grid of coordinates, which perfectly rectify the distortion of the parameter graph, are proposed for implementing the digitizing agent. We applied middleware agents to operate databases in the uniform Database-based Agent Communication Language (DBACL). The experimental results show that all agents in the system can work cooperatively.

This paper presents an alternative to current authoring methods for use in distance education. Several commercially available distance-education authoring tools are briefly discussed and an alternative, SAIDE (Simplified Authoring for Instructors using Distance Education), is presented. The discussion focuses on how SAIDE's easy-to-use feature set is useful to authors/trainers in a non-traditional learning/training environment. The technical aspects discussed include details about the user interface and the ways that key features are linked from the interface to the server. The design includes feature interaction, clickable textures, buttons, and boxes, and the user interface paradigm shift from the current authoring methods to a simpler and more intuitive structure. The thrust is to focus on a fully developed and interactive distance education experience via a tool that is simple enough for a novice at using software applications and still powerful enough for a skillful practitioner in distance education.

We present an architecture for digit-serial multiplication in finite fields GF(2/sup m/) with applications to cryptography. The proposed design uses polynomial basis representation and interleaves multiplication steps with degree reduction steps. An M-bit multiplier works with arbitrary irreducible polynomials and can be used for any binary field of order 2/sup m//spl les/2/sup M/. We introduce a new method for degree reduction which is significantly faster than previously reported iterative techniques. A representative example for a digit-size of d=4, illustrating the reduction circuit, is given. Experimental results show that the proposed method shortens the critical path of the reduction circuit by a factor of between 1.36 and 3.0 for digit-sizes ranging from d=4 to 16.

This paper introduces the electronic commerce payment system-telephone number (ECPS-TN) with a deferred payment method that bills the price of merchandise in electronic commerce shopping mall based on business to customer (B2C) together with a telephone bill, and presents its configurations, functions, and performances. The ECPS-TN consists of a server and gateway system that presents the service of ECPS-TN which can be linked by the present electronic commerce shopping mall of the Web/merchant server, customer management and billing system, and TCP/IP. By introducing a different payment method from the present payment such as credit card, electronic money wallet, and on-line depositing, it not only serves as a variation of payment but also secures service for most users by using the system that bills the price of merchandise in an electronic commerce shopping mall together with the number of the Public Switched Telephone Network/Integrated Service Digital Network (PSTN/ISDN) which belongs to an average Internet user.

A 21-item self-efficacy scale was developed to measure perceptions of capability associated with success in CS0 students. Data from 377 subjects enrolled in CS0 breadth-first courses over three years were used to assess the reliability and construct validity of the instrument. A principal factor analysis, with Varimax rotation, produced a six factor solution that closely aligned with the constructs of Bandura's (1986) self-efficacy model. The self-efficacy group analysis used participant factor scores that were calculated by adding the sum of Likert-type responses to items associated with each of the six derived factors. Subjects received a success, no-success designation based on final course grade. Significant differences were found between the factor scores of: success, no-success groups; males and females; males and females in success group; and males in success, no-success groups.

This paper describes the Bluetooth radio technology as an enabling platform to wirelessly stream audio content from hotspots to small form factor mobile devices over short ranges. The paper has been derived from my Mphil thesis based on streaming voice over Internet protocol over Bluetooth links. One can imagine a scenario of a person with a Bluetooth enabled mobile telephone streaming Moving Picture Expert Group-1 Layer 3 (MP3) music files to their mobile from a nearby access point in a cafe, bus, pub, taxi, train et al. Each file uploaded would be stored in the mobile phone limited by storage. Prior to downloading a MP3 file a micro payment could be made to purchase the track. The individual could also listen to music without making any payment and make voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) voice calls at a fraction of the cost of carrier networks.
