This paper presents a fast block-based motion estimation algorithm based on a bit plane technique. This algorithm can produce the eligible candidates for finding the enhanced motion vectors. The proposed method translates the expensive 2D block-matching problem to a simpler 1D matching by choosing some blocks as eligible candidates and eliminating the others. The bit-plane idea combined with the enhanced motion vector leads to a novel motion estimation algorithm. This novel algorithm offers computational scalability through two parameters, so the speed/performance trade-off of the proposed method can easily be controlled. Experiments show that the proposed method is several times faster than the full search algorithm and it produces a better prediction performance. There are some cases in which existing motion estimation techniques obtain a false motion vector with a huge prediction error, while the proposed method can find an enhanced motion vector with an excellent accuracy.

Many layered multicast (LM) congestion control schemes have been proposed to serve different users with heterogeneous bandwidth requirements. Most of the LM algorithms suffer from a large Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) leave latency and a sudden rate increase. Layered Increase/Decrease with Dynamic Layering (FLID-DL) was introduced to address these challenges. Nevertheless, FLID-DL can neither provide very good bandwidth fairness with TCP nor work well in the wireless environment with link loss. We propose the Extended FLID-DL (E-FLID-DL), by incorporating explicit congestion notification (ECN) into FLID-DL, to address these issues. E-FLID-DL not only improves bandwidth fairness with TCP, but also provides high throughput in a lossy network environment.

Communication application programming interfaces (API) constitute an important component of many network-based applications. They play a central role in the end-to-end performance ultimately delivered by networked applications. Most network architectures exploit the underlying networking API in their designs. In this paper, we conduct an empirical performance evaluation on the PC platform of some of the most popular networking API which include: Winsock/BSD, Java, and RMI. To explore the impact of the underlying operating system and Java virtual machine (JVM) architecture, we conducted performance tests on two operating systems namely, Windows NT 4.0 and Solaris 8. We found that on both operating system platforms, Winsock and BSD sockets yield about 1.8 times better throughput than Java sockets, and Java sockets in turn yield twice the throughput of that obtained using remote method invocation (RMI). We also obtained about 1.3 times higher latency overheads with Java compared to either Winsock or BSD as well as with RMI when compared to Java sockets on both Windows NT and Solaris operating systems. We hope that our results will be useful to application designers and developers in better optimizing end-to-end application performance.

Internet growth and activity has been increasing almost exponentially over the last decade. Today, millions of people all over the world use the Internet for a variety of activities, such as email and instant messaging, shopping, trading stocks, research, and many others. Of these, one of the fastest growing is online surveys. Because of its global reach, the Internet is the perfect medium for conducting surveys. In recent decades surveys have become a widely used tool to measure individuals' opinions, preferences and behavior. A Web-based survey is a very effective way to reach large numbers of people from all over the world compared to paper, in-person, or telephone surveys. A survey authoring tool called OnQ makes the creation and deployment of Web surveys intuitive and efficient, providing tools and features that commercially available survey authoring tools do not. This paper gives an overview of OnQ, provides details about each of its four main components, and describes currently active surveys produced by OnQ. The paper concludes with a summary and a view of plans for the future.

The gradient descent procedure of Wong et al. (1988) for user preference retrieval is based on linear additions of documents judged by the user. In contrast we design in this paper a multiplicative gradient descent search algorithm MG that uses a multiplicative query expansion strategy to adaptively improve the query vector. Our work generalizes the work of Wong et al. in the following two aspects: various updating functions may be used in our algorithm; and multiplicative updating for a weight is dependent on the value of the corresponding index term, which is more realistic and applicable to real-valued vector space. The algorithm MG boosts the usefulness of an index term exponentially, while the algorithm of Wong et al. does so linearly. We report a working prototype of the Web search project MAGRADS (Multiplicative Adaptive Gradient Descent Search) which is built upon algorithm MG, and its search performance analysis.

Power transformers' failures carry great costs to electric companies since they need resources to recover from them and to perform periodical maintenance. To avoid this problem in four working 40 MVA transformers, the authors have implemented the measurement system of a failure prediction tool, that is the basis of a predictive maintenance infrastructure. The prediction models obtain their inputs from sensors, whose values must be previously conditioned, sampled and filtered, since the forecasting algorithms need clean data to work properly. Applying data warehouse (DW) techniques, the models have been provided with an abstraction of sensors the authors have called virtual card (VC). By means of these virtual devices, models have access to clean data, both fresh and historic, from the set of sensors they need. Besides, several characteristics of the data flow coming from the VC, such as the sample rate or the set of sensors itself, can be dynamically reconfigured. A replication scheme was implemented to allow the distribution of demanding processing tasks and the remote management of the prediction applications.

In this research effort, the effect of UVC (260 nm) on the skin of one month old Balb/c mice exposed for a total of 100 hours is studied. The goal is to identify those independent variables in the experimental group that have a significant change in their measurements in compare to the measurements of their counterparts in the control group. To meet the goal, we create signatures for both experimental and control groups using the Kohonen self-organizing map. The comparison of signatures to each other delivers the significant changes in the independent variables between the two groups. The findings are compared with another set of findings obtained from using analysis of variance. The results reveal that using signature approach that is created based on the SOM methodology, is a viable tool for this type of analysis.

Implementation of a video transcoder for error resilient video is described. The video protection is based on two methods using frequency domain partitioning and modified H263++ data partitioning. Moreover, the transcoder uses multiple data packets to communicate a single video frame to the video decoder. The software-based transcoder is implemented on ARM922T RISC processor embedded in Altera Excalibur EPXA10 chip. Neither of the video protection methods requires pixel domain decoding/re-encoding, which substantially reduces complexity of the transcoder. Suitability to embedded systems is demonstrated by evaluating memory consumption and benchmarking the application. The effect of overhead of video protection on rate-distortion performance is analysed. The results show that when modified data partitioning is utilised, a 125 MHz ARM922T is able to process 178 frames/s, if hardware/software co-optimisation and QCIF format are used.

The goal of this paper is to describe a new approach to a content creation and delivery mechanism for a programming course. This approach is based on the concept of creating a large repository of learning objects, each of which consists of the core material, code examples, supplementary notes, and review questions. A learning object will be uniquely described by a XML document and presents an interface for future search, retrieval and updating, as well as for potential connection to external assessment tools. Furthermore, we describe a new teaching, learning and authoring tool (called adaptive book) that allows users to add new learning objects, modify current ones, and discuss concepts using a variety of representation models. With the adaptive book, an instructor will be able to design his or her very own course using a large repository of material, which will target a particular audience or a customized syllabus. In addition, the electronic adaptive book will serve as an interactive, continuously up-to-date learning environment for students. It will allow students to create personal learning profiles that are embedded into the core content of the course. We believe that in the near future, this electronic adaptive book will have the potential to replace or enhance traditional paper textbooks. In all physicality, it is impossible to have a personal instructor for each student, but with the adaptive book, we believe we are one step closer to realizing the dream of individualized instructions for each and every student.

This paper describes eight experiments that investigate the possibility of using compositional sounds, stereophony, structured musical stimuli (earcons), environmental sounds (auditory icons) and speech to communicate e-mail categories and other e-mail related information such as attachment, priority, and subject of e-mail messages. The results of this investigation contribute to reduce visual complexity, which is often encountered during graphical browsing of e-mail data. E-mail categories were communicated using sequences of 10, 4 and 2 seconds of compositional sounds (4 experiments with each duration) and by combining the communication of e-mail category with e-mail status information using left, centre and right stereophonic positions (1 experiment), the presence or absence of an attachment using an environmental sound (1 experiment), priority using tones (1 experiment) and subject using speech (1 experiment). The results of these experiments demonstrate that short sequences (typically 2 to 4 seconds) of compositional sounds were sufficient for users to recognise the category of a particular e-mail. They also demonstrate that status information of an e-mail (unread, read, replied and forwarded), priority (low, medium and high), the presence or absence of an attachment and subject were also communicated successfully using additional auditory stimuli in the same auditory message that communicated the e-mail category. Thus the approach of combining different types of auditory stimuli to communicate larger volumes of data demonstrated that it has the potential to reduce complexity in graphical browsing by communicating some information aurally. Issues of perceptual context and synchronisation of media have also been identified.
