Remote access to distributed hyperlinked information proves to be one of the killer applications for computer networks. More and more content in current inter and intranets is available as hyperdata, a form easing its distribution and semantic organization. In the framework of the Internet's Web-portals and pay-sites, mechanisms for login based on username and password enable the dynamic customization as well as partial protection of the content. In other applications (e.g. commercial intranets) various similar schemes of authentication are deployed. Nevertheless, stolen passwords are an easy avenue to identity theft, in both public and commercial data networks. Once a perpetrator enters a system, assuming an authorized user's identity, the task of actually detecting this intrusion becomes non-trivial and is often ignored completely. Thus, in addition to the initial authentication step we propose a runtime intrusion detection mechanism, required to maintain a virtually continuous user authentication process and detect identity theft and password misuses. The current paper focuses on designing a pervasive intrusion detection method for hyperdata systems, based on training on and analyzing of access patterns to hyperlinked data, aiming at detecting intruders and raising a red flag at the content provider's side. Our solution is based on a new technique, on-the-fly adaptive training for normality on streams of data access patterns. This enables runtime intrusion detection through analysis of correlations between current patterns and the adaptive past-knowledge. Such a method is to be used in conjunction with current username-password protection schemes. We introduce the motivation behind our solution, discuss the novel detection and training metrics and propose a real-life deployment design. We implement the main algorithm and perform experiments for assessing its intrusion detection ability, with very encouraging results. We also discuss the deployment of our method f

Next-generation wireless LAN and mobile communications might be constructed upon IP based radio networks. A deep and fast fading of high-frequency high-speed radio transmission with a longer path will be inevitable and give rise to severe erroneous channels. It causes frame synchronization loss and address misreading of the IP packet. New schemes are requested for the protocol and physical layer of such IEEE 802.11s to improve degradation in reception probability or throughput of the packet. The proposed new schemes are three fold. First is the introduction of an error correcting code (ECC) into the physical layer of the packet header and to the payload frame. A new ECC and new scheme for the robust packet synchronization are proposed. The second proposal is the adoption of GPS data to discriminate mobiles accessible to the access point (AP). The distance is the prime parameter to estimate RF signal quality. Third is enhancement of busy or idle messages by introducing the marked packet upon the handshaking and termination modes to cover the hidden terminal problem. Furthermore, a single-carrier transceiver is discussed as one candidate for future applications, basing on the controlled access distance and fading. The transceiver is promising from the respects of simple circuit configuration and constant envelope modulation with low power consumption. The developed torus knot code (TKC) is robust and high-speed for the decoding, and considered as the outer code for the 8-PSK TCM with inner code of a rate 2/3 convolution code.

Multiple description coding has been studied as an approach for transmission of images over error Prone environments. The multiple description coding method proposed here takes into account the content of the image and provides the least amount of degradation, caused by loss of descriptors, for those areas of the image which are of greater interest. This is achieved by employing a non-linear geometrical transform to odd redundancy mainly to the area of interest followed by a partitioning of the nonlinearly transformed image into sub-images which are coded and transmitted over separate channels, Simulations show that this approach yields exceptional performance even when only one descriptor is received. Moreover, the method proposed here can be implemented through pre- and post-processing of the image data, without modification to the source codecs (e.g., JPEG).

A new technique for optimally encoding a given source, statistical properties of which are described by the first-order model is introduced. The calculation of a minimum length of codewords is based on the consecutive redistribution of the self-information of symbols in accordance with their probabilities at each stage of the encoding. The proposed method performs equally well for an arbitrary order of symbol probabilities. While cod words are generated by a separate combinatorial procedure, the overall computational cost of the proposed method is lower than that for the Huffman code.

Results include: (1) multimedia searches are more complex than general searches in queries per user session and terms per query, and (2) audio queries are the most popular type of multimedia queries (compared to video and image queries) in number of queries submitted and query durations.
