Introduces the notions of mask and multiple format for setting up a progressive access to information in an information system. Masks consist of more or less complete representations of the structure of information while multiple formats correspond to different representations available for multimedia data. We describe how these two notions are integrated into AROM, an object-based knowledge representation system which supports a UML-like formalism, by instantiating a model called PAM (Progressive Access Model). More generally, a progressive and adapted access to information can be given to users of any information system by simply adapting the PAM to the underlying data schema and coupling it with the target data or knowledge base. © 2002 IEEE.

Traditional MPEG-2 video compression uses Test Model 5 (TM5) as the rate-control algorithm, which does not consider the perceptual quality of the compressed sequence. This paper proposes a new rate-control algorithm, which integrates TM5 with the Watson's digital-video-quality (DVQ) metric. As a proponent of the VQEG (Video Quality Expert Group), the Watson's DVQ is a subjective quality metric based on the human visual system (HVS) which estimates the perceptual quality of human viewers. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm outperforms TM5 for low-motion video sequence, and performs about he same as TM5 for highmotion video sequences.

We examine the issues of combining multiple query representations in a single IP engine. Differing query representations are used to retrieve different documents. Thus, when combining their results, improvements are observed in effectiveness. We use multiple TREC query representations (title, description and narrative) as a basis for experimentation. We examine several combination approaches presented in the literature (vector addition, CombSUM and CombMNZ) and present a new combination approach using query vector length normalization. We examine two query representation combination approaches (title + description and title + narrative) for 150 queries from TREC 6, 7 and 8 topics. Our QLN (Query Length Normalization) technique outperformed vector addition and data fusion approaches by a,3 much as 32% and was on average 24% better. Additionally, QLN always outperformed the single best query representation in terms of effectiveness.

Web-based information Systems (W[S) are now widely used for diffusing and processing information over the network. Methodological guidelines which assist WIS developers in their task must take into account the specificities of WIS (a hypermedia structured information, navigation features, etc.). This paper presents KIWIS, a generator of WIS, which addresses the issue of designing and automatically deploying such WIS. Using KIWIS, designers car specify, at a conceptual level, the features of the WIS to be generated. This features are made operational by KIWIS by instantiating different models dedicated to the description of the application domain, the expected functionalities, and some features concerning adaptability. Any WIS described, and generated with KIWIS can be considered adaptable since users can progressively access the content or information while the presentation of information respects the graphical charters selected or defined by users.

In this paper we demonstrate that in an ideal Distributed information Retrieval environment, taking the ability of each collection server to return relevant documents into account when selecting collections can be effective. Based on this assumption, we suggest a new approach to resolve the collection selection problem. In order to predict a collection's ability to return relevant documents, we inspect a limited number n of documents retrieved from each collection and analyze the proximity of search keywords within them. In our experiments, we vary the underlying parameter n of our suggested model to define the most appropriate number of top documents to be inspected. Moreover, we evaluate the retrieval effectiveness of our approach and compare it with both the centralized indexing and the CORI approaches [1], [16]. Preliminary results from these experiments, conducted on WT10g test collection, tend to demonstrate that our suggested method can achieve appreciable retrieval effectiveness.

This paper presents an original information-retrieval engine, called MIRE, for integrating structured data and text. Among other things, MIRE is designed to work in a natural and efficient way with the inherent hierarchies of structured data. While multi-dimensional access methods have originally been developed for spatial applications, they can be successfully used to index hierarchical structured data and add to an existing information-retrieval engine the capabilitv of navigating hierarchical dimensions. To support this capability, MIRE enhances the processing algorithms of an existing multidimensional access method to avoid overflow and support for hierarchical dimensions. Compared to 2 search engine with multiple indexes for a different type of search, the multidimensional approach shows a significant reduction in the number of page accesses over a large document collection.

For pt.I. see itcc, IEEE proceeding, p. 529-36 (April 2001). In this paper, we develop an algorithm for t-error correcting/d-error detecting and all unidirectional error detecting (t-EC/d-ED/AUED) codes in the framework of neural work. As t-EC/d-ED/AUED codewords are formed by concatenation of information bits and one or more groups of check bits depending on how we want to construct code, we demonstrate neural network algorithms for constructing, detecting and correcting codes. As a continuation of the previous paper, we present an algorithm, code construction, detecting and correcting for 2EC/5ED/AUED code II. We also plan to present for other codes with more examples in near future as well. © 2002 IEEE.

Quality is subjective. Quality can be objectified by the industry standards process represented by such consumer items as compact disc ("CD') and digital versatile disc ("DVD'). What is lacking is a means for not only associating the creation of valued intangible assets an extensions of recognition but establishing responsibility for copies that may be digitized or pass through a digital domain. Digital watermarking exists at a convergence point between piracy and privacy. Watermarks serve as a receipt for information commerce. There is not likely to be a single digital watermark encoding scheme that best handles the trade-offs between security, robustness, and quality but several architectures to handle various concerns. The most commercially useful watermarking schemes are key-based, combining cryptographic,features with models Of perception. Most importantly, in audio watermarking there currently exists mature technologies which have been proven to be statistically inaudible.

Content based video indexing and retrieval has its foundations in the analyses of the prime video temporal structures. Consequently, technologies for video segmentation and key-frame extraction have become crucial for the development of advanced digital video systems. Conventional algorithms for video partitioning and key-frame extraction are mainly implemented autonomously. By focusing he analysis on the compressed video features, this paper introduces a real-time algorithm for scene change detection and key-frame extraction that generates the frame difference metrics by analysing statistics of the macro-block features extracted from the MPEG compressed stream. The key-frame extraction method is implemented using difference metrics curve simplification by discrete contour evolution algorithm. This approach resulted in a fast and robust algorithm. Results of computer simulations are reported.

The effectiveness of restoration techniques mainly depends on the accuracy of the image modeling. One of the most popular degradation models is based on the assumption that the image blur can be modeled as a superposition with an impulse response H that may be space variant and its output is subject to an additive noise. Our research aimed the use of statistical concepts and tools for developing a new class of image restoration algorithms. Several variants of a heuristic scatter matrices based algorithm (HSBA), the algorithm HBA that uses the Bhattacharyya coefficient for image restoration, the heuristic regression based algorithm for image restoration and a new approaches of image restoration based on the innovations algorithm are reported. The LMS type algorithm AMVR is presented in the final section of the paper. A comparative study is performed and reported on the quality and efficiency of the presented noise removal algorithms.
