While the persistent data of many advanced database applications, such as OLAP and scientific studies, are characterized by very high dimensionality, typical queries posed on these data appeal to a small number of relevant dimensions. Unfortunately, the multidimensional access methods designed for high-dimensional data perform rather poorly for these partially specified queries. A potentially very appealing idea, frequently suggested in the literature, is to adopt a node-splitting policy that takes into account the "importance" of individual dimensions, which could be determined either a priori or through a statistical sampling of actual queries. This paper presents the results of some carefully controlled experiments conducted to observe the effects of query-based splitting on the performance of KDB-trees. The strategy is compared to a splitting policy that selects the split dimensions in a "cyclic" fashion, which has been shown to be very effective, especially in high-dimensional situations. Based on the results, the query-based splitting does not appear to be a very appealing splitting strategy for KDB-trees. © 2002 IEEE.

The paper describes experiments that investigated the use of auditory stimuli (speech and non-speech sound) to communicate data in two information systems. These experiments were performed under a multimedia stock control system and a multimedia e-mail tool. Experiments using the multimedia stock control information system investigated rhythms and timbre to communicate windows and their associated junctions as well as the simultaneous use of speech and sound to communicate a large amount of information to users.. Experiments using the multimedia e-mail tool investigated the use of tunes and short pitch sequences with visual stimuli to communicate information in browsing e-mail data. The paper also integrates experimental results from both systems and discusses the incorporation of auditory stimuli in interactive audio-visual or multimedia information systems. Auditory stimuli helped to communicate, complement or re-enforce information that users received via the visual channel. These auditory technologies could also benefit visually impaired users of such systems. Results also indicated that the simultaneous use of sound and speech can be useful in the design of interactive multimedia information systems. The inclusion of auditory stimuli (including speech) in the design of information systems has the potential to maximise the volume of information communicated to users. A set of empirically derived design guidelines for the auditory design of information systems are described. These guidelines include issues of presentation, classification and structure of auditory messages as part of the interface design in interactive or multimedia information systems.

This research paper presents a new two-way double-type smart card terminal and a new system design and development for a prescription order communication system (POCS) between the hospital and pharmacy, based on the Internet, public-key infrastructure (PKI), and concurrently parallel co-operation with both medical professional and patient smart cards in synchronized status, in order to control security and privacy of patients and manage drug histories. A concurrently parallel co-operation method in synchronized status has been proposed in order to merge the digital signature generated by a medical professional with a patient's prescription data. The digital signatures written by the medical professionals (doctors and pharmacists) holding and using their individually master smart cards are applied to all contents of the prescription stored on a patient slave smart card in synchronized status in the two-way double-type terminal. Therefore, digital signatures for all prescriptions stored on the smart card should effectively be used to prevent it being altered, forged, or reused by unauthorized users and being repudiated by medical professionals. © 2002 IEEE.

Due to its portability and popularity for Internet applications, Java has become one of the major programming languages. The similar syntax inherited from the C language and the pure object oriented features, compared to the non-pure object-oriented C++ language, have caused Java to be a good candidate as a tool in designing object oriented systems, especially in database servers. However the performance of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is the reason that several database designers, such as Oracle, IBM, Sybase and Informix, have not fully transferred their database management system (DBMS) into Java. One of the performance indices is the responsiveness for online transaction processing (OLTP) which may be dominated by the garbage collection system inside the JVM. In this paper eight Java programs, jess, javac, mtrt, compress, db, db4o, smallDB and ozone, are used to study the dynamic memory behavior. The latter four programs are Java object-oriented database management systems and their object behaviors are compared to those of the four regular Java programs. Simulation results such as object size distribution, average object size, object live distribution and total garbage collection cycle are reported. © 2002 IEEE.

An important parameter in evaluating data hiding methods is hiding capacity [3] [11] [12], [16] i.e. the amount of data that a certain algorithm can "hide" until reaching allowable distortion limits. One fundamental difference between watermarking [4] [5] [7] [8] [9] [13] [14] [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] [22] [23] and generic data hiding resides exactly in the main applicability and descriptions of the two domains. Data hiding aims at enabling Alice and Bob to exchange messages [1] [6] [15] in a manner as resilient and stealthy as possible, through a medium controlled by evil Mallory. On the other hand, digital watermarking is deployed by Alice to prove ownership over a piece of data, to Jared the Judge, usually in the case when Tim the Thief(1) benefits from using/selling that very same piece of data (or maliciously modified versions of it). In the digital framework, watermarking algorithms that make use of information hiding techniques have been developed and hiding capacity was naturally use as a metric in evaluating their power to hide information. Whereas the maximal amount of information that a certain algorithm can "hide" (while keeping the data within allowable distortion bounds) is certainly related to the ability to assert ownership in court, it is not directly measuring its "power of persuasion " (i.e. how convinced will Jared the Judge and the Jury be when presenting the algorithm and applying it on an object in dispute), in part also because it doesn't consider directly the existence and power of watermarking attacks. In this paper we show why, due to its particularities, watermarking requires a different metric, more closely related to its ultimate purpose, claiming ownership in a court of law. We define one suitable metric (watermarking power) and show how it relates to derivates of hiding capacity. We prove that there are cases where considering hiding capacity is sub-optimal as a metric in evaluating watermarking methods whereas the metric of watermark

This paper proposes a non-scanning display digital algorithm for still and moving pictures. This innovative method is independent of display device or camera/transmission hardware configuration limited by the number of scanning lines. The concept is the realization of effective image data transmission to display devices in which the image is converted as digital bit data.

In this paper, e-words are used for coding k-ary trees with n internal nodes. The properties of e-words are discussed in depth, such as the necessary and sufficient condition of e-words, and based on the properties, a loopless algorithm is obtained to generate e-words for k-ary trees in lexicographic order, which is more efficient in both space and time than the previous algorithm. In addition, e-words can also be easily generated in lexicographic order by a recursive algorithm, and in the order with the Strong Minimal Change Property (SMCP) by a loopless algorithm.
