We present a partitioning method able to manage Web log sessions. Sessions are assimilable to transactions, i.e., tuples of variable size of categorical data. We adapt the standard definition of mathematical distance used in the K-Means algorithm to represent transactions dissimilarity, and redefine the notion of cluster centroid. The cluster centroid is used as the representative of the common properties of cluster elements. We show that using our concept of cluster centroid together with Jaccard distance we obtain results that are comparable with standard approaches, but substantially improve their efficiency.

This paper presents an original information-retrieval engine, called MIRE, for integrating structured data and text. Among other things, MIRE is designed to work in a natural and efficient way with the inherent hierarchies of structured data. While multidimensional access methods have originally been developed for spatial applications, they can be successfully used to index hierarchical structured data and add to an existing information retrieval engine the capability of navigating hierarchical dimensions. To support this capability, MIRE enhances the processing algorithms of an existing multidimensional access method to avoid overflow and support for hierarchical dimensions. Compared to a search engine with multiple indexes for a different type of search, the multidimensional approach shows a significant reduction in the number of page accesses over a large document collection.

This research investigates the synergies of applying a rapid application development (RAD) process model to support e-business project management. The paper reports on the results of 11 unstructured interviews with practicing e-business project managers. The interviews were undertaken: (1) to document the current development approaches being used by e-business project managers, and (2) to identify the risks and issues with which they are dealing. The research outcome supports a RAD approach for e-business development and develops a framework of strategies and tactics which e-business project managers could use to defend themselves against the threat of failure in a difficult and rapidly changing environment.

In this paper, we present the development of a multimedia system for the real-time delivery of online courses. The system provides the instructor with a real-life environment to teach in a manner similar to a classroom. The instructor's video, audio, hand-writing, drawing and slide presentations are synchronized and streamed, and at the same time the students can view the lectures online in a simulated classroom environment. One of the main strengths of this system is that the instructor's lectures can be archived for future usage by the students. The students can interrupt the teacher and are also given the opportunity to ask questions.

A large amount of online information resides on the "invisible Web" - Web pages that are generated dynamically from databases and other data sources hidden from the user. They are not indexed by a static URL but are generated when queries are made via a search interface (a specialized search engine). In this paper, we propose a system that is capable of automatically making use of these specialized engines to find information on the invisible Web. We describe our overall architecture and process: from obtaining the search engines to picking the right engines to query. Experiments show that we can find information that is not found by traditional search engines.

To guarantee quality of service (QoS), the requirements for video transmission such as delay and cell loss rate (CLR) are very stringent. These constraints are difficult to meet if high network utilization is desired. Dynamic bandwidth allocation is thus needed. Video traffic prediction can play an important role in dynamic bandwidth allocation and traffic management in high speed networks. We propose a fast convergent algorithm to predict the variation of I frames, based on which the bandwidth is assigned. The new algorithm can achieve fast convergence and small prediction error.

The need for managing similar documents in different languages is increasing with the growing amount of electronic information that is available in documents of the same type (e.g. news streams). This paper proposes a viable approach to information access, emphasising the hypertextual paradigm in a multilingual framework. This task of processing/structuring text so that cross-lingual hypertext links are generated is called multilingual authoring (MA). Methods from natural language processing, especially information extraction, to both monolingual authoring and MA are described, and a general architecture for MA is defined. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is discussed using the description of the NAMIC (News Agencies Multilingual information Categorisation) prototype system.

We present a Smooth Pursuit Eye Movement (SPEM) coding scheme to control the encoder generated variable bit rate (VBR) data over a constant bit rate (CBR) channel for real-time streaming video applications. This proposed rate control integrates both frame and block layer rate control to regulate the bit rate using the combination of feedforward control, feedbackward control, and model-based approaches together with characteristics of human visual perception. As a result, our proposed SPEM rate control method encodes the video sequence with less frame skipping and with higher encoded video quality compared to TMN8, which is currently implemented in the UBC H263+ codec.

Several medium-to-large companies are currently in the process of using external hosting to deploy their Internet applications. External hosting by such application service providers (ASPs) as IBM provides a low-cost, secure and reliable way for companies to deploy e-commerce enterprise applications without the need to purchase costly infrastructure. However, while designing software for applications that run on the servers of external hosts, performance may suffer if the data and the application reside at two different locations. In this paper, we provide a technique for improving the performance in such applications. This technique is implemented in large industrial software systems. We provide the software architecture and preliminary performance results.

During their navigation, Web users leave many records of their activity. This huge amount of data can be a useful source of knowledge. Sophisticated data mining processes are needed for this knowledge to be extracted, understood and used. In this paper, we propose a Web usage mining (WUM) system, called SUGGEST, which dynamically generates suggested links to Web pages of potential interest for a user. SUGGEST is designed to efficiently integrate the WUM process with the ordinary Web server functionalities. It can provide useful information to make the user's Web navigation easier and to optimize the Web server's performance. Two quantities are introduced in order to give a measure of the quality of our WUM system.
