Current crawler-based search engines usually return a long list of search results containing a lot of noise documents. By indexing collected documents on a topic path in taxonomy, taxonomy-based search engines can improve the search result quality. However the searches are limited to the locally compiled databases. We propose an adaptive Web search method to improve the search result quality enabling the users to search many databases existing in the Web space. The method has a characteristic that combines the taxonomy-based search engines and a machine learning technique. More specifically, we construct a rule-based classifier using pre-classified documents provided by a taxonomy-based search engine based on a selected context category on its taxonomy, and then use it to modify the user query. The resulting modified query will be sent to the crawler-based search engines and the returned results will be presented to the user. We evaluate the effectiveness of our method by showing that the returned results from the modified query almost contain documents that will be categorized into the selected context category.

KBS Adaptive Hyperbook is a framework designed for modeling, organizing, and maintaining distributed hypermedia resources on the Web with the purpose of supporting Web-based distance education. Since the Hyperbook system is implemented based on a sophisticated meta modeling language (O-Telos), its authoring depends to a great extent on the Hyperbook developers instead of lecturers who have rich teaching experience but generally no knowledge of O-Telos and meta modeling. This has become a notable obstacle to enrich the content of existing Hyperbooks and further construct new Hyperbooks which are applicable to different specialties. In this paper we present a novel approach which can achieve schema-level transformation between O-Telos schema and W3C standard XML schema. By transforming Hyperbook data models, which are originally represented in O-Telos, into XML schemas, we can provide a standalone Hyperbook authoring environment which is able to directly utilize XML-schema-aware XML visual editors as a front-end GUI and enable lecturers to easily accomplish Hyperbook authoring.

The emergence of the World Wide Web has led to an increased interest in methods for searching for information. A key characteristic of many online document collections is that the documents have pre-defined category information, such as the variety of scientific articles accessible via digital libraries (e.g. ACM, IEEE, etc.), medical articles, news-wires and various directories (e.g. Yahoo, OpenDirectory Project, etc.). However, most previous information retrieval systems have not taken the pre-existing category information into account. In this paper, we present weight adjustment schemes based upon the category information in the vector-space model, which are able to select the most content-specific and discriminating features. Our experimental results on TREC data sets show that the pre-existing category information does provide additional beneficial information to improve retrieval. The proposed weight adjustment schemes perform better than the vector-space model with the inverse document frequency (IDF) weighting scheme when queries are less specific. The proposed weighting schemes can also benefit retrieval when clusters are used as an approximations to categories.

The need for copyright protection has become a detachable requirement for online media e-business as online multimedia businesses and enabling technologies become viable in recent years. Watermarking enables copyright protection in e-business but it also slows down the packaging process for delivery. The requirement of instant delivery is a prime requirement for online business. In the literature, extensive research on watermarking performance has been emphasized on imperceptibility and robustness but not the efficiency factor for online e-business, for example processing time and storage requirement that are crucial to the success of online e-business. We investigate four watermarking schemes derived from one-bit watermarking, multiple-bit watermarking and their combinations in order to identify a viable watermarking scheme that can meet the requirements of online e-business. The performance of these schemes in terms of preparation time, delivery time and storage requirement are measured and reported. Our analysis proves that the watermarking schemes with multiple-bit watermarking can ensure instant delivery with a penalty of some extra storage requirements.

We have applied the effective index method to reduce the two-dimensional refractive index profile into the one-dimensional refractive index structure and modified the wave equations to obtain paraxial wave equations. TE and TM polarized fields in the curved single-mode planar waveguides are analyzed using the scalar beam-propagation method employing the finite-difference method with a slab structure. The bending loss in bent waveguides is analyzed for optical fields obtained from the beam-propagation method and comparisons are made between the loss for the waveguides with various radii of curvature and refractive index differences. The outward shift of the optical field, which is generated at the connection between a straight and bent waveguide, is obtained from calculations of the location of maximum optical intensity. The transition loss can be reduced by introducing an optimized inward offset at a straight-to-bend junction. The wavelength shift due to birefringence of TE and TM polarized fields in bent waveguides is also calculated.

This paper has proposed a distributed power control algorithm that uses a stochastic search technique in order to solve linear systems of equations for power update in CDMA cellular radio systems. The proposed algorithm is developed by applying Bremermann's evolutionary computation algorithm to the CDMA power control problem. The major advantage of the applied evolutionary computation algorithm is more rapid optimization on linear systems of equations compared with the simple genetic algorithm (SGA). By employing distributed constrained power control (DCPC) as a reference algorithm, we have designed and implemented computational experiments on the DS-CDMA system. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm significantly enhances the optimization speed of power control. The proposed algorithm is also compared with the bang-bang type algorithm used in the IS-95 and W-CDMA systems. The results show that our proposed algorithm also has the potential to increase the CDMA cellular radio network capacity and decrease the mobile terminal power consumption.

Search services on hyperlinked data are becoming popular among users because of the huge amount of data available and the consequent difficulty of retrieving and filtering relevant documents. Traditional term-based search engines are not very useful for this purpose since the resulting ranking depends on the users's precision in expressing the query. Current research, instead, takes a different approach, called topic distillation, which consists of finding documents related to the query topic, but these do not necessarily contain the query string. Current algorithms for topic distillation first compute a base set containing all the relevant pages and then apply an iterative procedure to obtain the authoritative pages. In this paper we present STED, a system for topic distillation and enumeration (i.e. identification of different communities) of Web documents. The system is based on a technique which computes authoritative pages by analyzing the structure of the base set. More specifically, the system applies a statistical approach to the co-citation matrix associated with the base set, to find the most co-cited pages and analyzes both the link structure and the content of pages. Several experiments have demonstrated the effectiveness and efficiency of the system.

The paper describes experiments that investigated the use of auditory stimuli (speech and non-speech sound) to communicate data in two information systems. These experiments were performed under a multimedia stock control system and a multimedia e-mail tool. Experiments using the multimedia stock control information system investigated rhythms and timbre to communicate windows and their associated functions as well as the simultaneous rise of speech and sound to communicate a large amount of information to users. Experiments using the multimedia e-mail tool investigated the use of tunes and short pitch sequences with visual stimuli to communicate information in browsing e-mail data. The paper also integrates experimental results front both systems and discusses the incorporation of auditory stimuli in interactive audio-visual or multimedia information systems. Auditory stimuli helped to communicate, complement or reinforce information that users received via the visual channel. These auditory technologies could also benefit visually impaired users of such systems. Results also indicated that the simultaneous use of sound and speech can be useful in the design of interactive multimedia information systems. The inclusion of auditory stimuli (including speech) in the design of information systems has the potential to maximise the volume of information communicated to users.

This research paper presents a new two-way double-type smart card terminal and a new system design and development for a prescription order communication system (POCS) between the hospital and pharmacy, based on the Internet, public-key infrastructure (PKI), and concurrently parallel co-operation with both medical professional and patient smart cards in synchronized status, in order to control security and privacy of patients and manage drug histories. A concurrently parallel co-operation method in synchronized status has been proposed in order to merge the digital signature generated by a medical professional with a patient's prescription data. The digital signatures written by the medical professionals (doctors and pharmacists) holding and using their individually master smart cards are applied to all contents of the prescription stored on a patient slave smart card in synchronized status in the two-way double-type terminal. Therefore, digital signatures for all prescriptions stored on the smart card should effectively be used to prevent it being altered, forged, or reused by unauthorized users and being repudiated by medical professionals.

A category map developed based on Kohonen's self-organizing map has been proven to be a promising browsing tool for solving the information overload problem of the World Wide Web. The SOM algorithm automatically compresses and transforms a complex information space into a two-dimensional graphical representation. Such graphical representation provides a user-friendly interface for users to explore the automatically generated mental model. However, as the amount of information increases, the size of the category map is expected to increase accordingly in order to accommodate the important concepts in the information space, which increases the visual load of the category map. In this paper, we propose the fisheye views and fractal views to support the visualization of category map. Fisheye views are developed based on the distortion approach while fractal views are developed based on the information reduction approach. We have developed a prototype system and conducted a user evaluation to investigate the performance of fisheye views and fractal views. The results show that both fisheye views and fractal views significantly increase the effectiveness of visualizing the category map. In addition, fractal views are significantly better than fisheye views.
