There is an increasing demand for hypermedia delivery of technical documentation for safety critical systems. In many ways this documentation is as safety critical as the systems it documents, in that errors in the documentation can cause catastrophic maintenance failures. For this reason there need to be standards regulating the production of hypermedia documentation in these areas, but most of the work being done is directed towards data formats for storage and delivery, rather than on quality of content. The paper discusses the types of standard that might be relevant to this activity, along with some examples taken from the author's experience of instances of that type of standard. This discussion is used as a basis for the proposal of a standards framework for hypermedia technical documentation systems and a research agenda, based on some of the author's work, for development of such standards.

We present a novel and simple optical watermarking system aiming at overriding some practical problems when the state-of-the art digital watermarking techniques are applied to authenticate printed documents. We name our technique optical watermarking differing from traditional digital watermarking in the sense that the watermark extraction is done by some optical and visual means like a photocopier, while no digitization is required. The system security is guaranteed by adopting a content-based key share scheme originated from visual cryptography. The non-obtrusiveness effect of the watermarked document is achieved by modulating the watermark into a higher resolution grating level. Experimental results demonstrate the availability and practicality of the proposed approach.

Watermarking with oblivious detection and high robustness capabilities together is still a challenging problem. In addition, the number of secret keys which is required in the detection process should be kept as minimal as possible. Usually, a human visual model-based watermarking method requires recording the hiding places where watermarks are concealed. However, this kind of embedding strategy will cause an extra burden during watermark detection. The objective of this paper is to propose a more general watermarking framework which can satisfy the requirements of robustness and oblivious detection while only requiring one secret key in both the embedding and the detection processes. The paper proposes to employ the side information concept which is commonly used in communication together with a mean filtering process to design a new watermarking technology. Experiments show that the method is robust against common attacks.

Often Web users want to be notified when specific information contained in a Web page has been modified. The problem of detecting Web document changes has been deeply investigated and several systems providing notification of Web page changes are available. These systems do not provide notification of changes on specific information contained in a Web page. In this work we present a system called CDWeb that performs this task. It allows users to monitor a whole document or specific portions of it. Users can also specify what kind of changes they are interested in, such as structural changes, or semantic changes. The system provides a flexible and adaptive view of the Web: it tracks user queries and creates user profiles, in order to associate a personalized view to each user.

Data hiding in multimedia is the process of secretly embedding information into data sources such as image, video, or audio signals without changing the perceptual quality of the data source. We present a novel blind data hiding technique for hiding information in still images. This technique is based on embedding the information in the transform domain, after decorrelating the samples in the spatial domain. This results in a significant increase in the number of transform coefficients that can be used to transmit the hidden information. The technique is suitable for a variety of data hiding applications such as steganography, data authentication and captioning. The technique achieves a higher and more secure data embedding rate than existing data embedding transform domain techniques developed for these particular applications.

We examine the enhancement-layer rate allocation problem in progressive fine granularity scalable (PFGS) video coding. The problem arises from the fact that different frames in the enhancement layer have different rates in PFGS coding. A rate-distortion (R-D) function for a multi-frame group is first established for enhancement-layer PFGS coding, followed by experiments to verify its validity using real test sequences. Optimal rate allocation among frames in the group is then given based on the R-D function, together with a simple implementation that is suitable for applications like streaming video. Experiments show that, compared with uniform bit allocation, optimal bit allocation not only makes the quality variation in decoded video much smoother, but also improves the average PSNR of PFGS coding by 0.3-0.5 dB.

Automatic video segmentation is the first and necessary step that structures a video into several smaller and meaningful units for effective browsing and retrieval for large video databases. The effectiveness of this step is, thus, very crucial to the overall performance of a video database management system. We present a novel concept in scene segmentation called noise-reduction scene segmentation. This approach discards irrelevant areas or noise in a video frame from being used in the segmentation process to increase the accuracy of the segmentation. Unlike existing techniques, video frames are first noise-reduced and only relevant information is left for subsequent steps of the segmentation process. Our experimental results indicate that a seamless integration of our simple noise filter to an existing scene segmentation technique offers a non-negligible improvement in the segmentation accuracy (i.e., as much as 59% less falsely detected scenes).

We present a positioning system implemented in Java that is designed to provide tourist information for car users. Most of this multimedia information is stored in a local database in the car, but it is possible to increase or update it by accessing a remote database by mobile telephone. The system can be controlled like any standard computer by keyboard or by mouse, but also offers hands-free control based on an oral interface module, which is very important for a system designed to be used inside a car.

The paper presents a theoretic analysis of watermark capacity. First, a simplified watermark scheme is postulated. In the scheme, detection yields a multidimensional vector, in which each dimension is assumed to be i.i.d. (independent and identically distributed) and to follow the Gaussian distribution. The major constraint on the capacity is detected reliability, which is one of the most important measures of the utility of watermarks. The problem is to figure out the maximum amount of information payload with the reliability requirement still satisfied. The reliability is represented by three kinds of error rates: false positive error rate, false negative error rate, and bit error rate. These error rates are formulated under certain assumptions, and the theoretical capacity can be determined by setting the bounds on all of the error rates. Further, experiments were performed to verify the theoretic analysis and it was shown that this approach yields a good estimate of the capacity of a watermark.

The core of the project is the design, construction of and results obtained with a wireless measuring system using a passive integrated resonance circuit. The system is intended for measurement of small pressure variations and wireless information transmission. It is based on the principle of variation of the resonance frequency of a single-chip integrated timed circuit with measuring capacitance. The one-chip resonant circuit has been realised as a monolith integrated sensor in CMOS technology. The dimension is approximately 10 mm/sup 2/. The active part has the form of an absorption resonance frequency meter. Measurement, control, approximation, computation and result processing are performed on a PC. The paper deals with the theory of system design, electronic circuit connections, parasitic capacitances effects calculation, fabrication technology of the integrated passive resonant circuit, result evaluation and techniques of the PC-controlled absorption meter.
