Summary form only given. This series of special sessions examine multimedia security from both theoretical and applications-oriented perspectives. Our aim is to help advance security technology, assess its appropriateness for certain problems, and broaden its usefulness to intellectual property management. Based on the success of last year’s sessions, we hope to continue the tradition of providing an open and objective forum for multimedia security issues. This year, we will have 17 papers in these special sessions. Three of them are watermarking techniques in the printed format. Five papers cover novel imagehide0 watermarking techniques. Three theoretical analysis papers will be shown in these sessions. There will be two papers covering the attacks and benchmarking of watermarking methods. In addition to the image videos watermarking methods, there will be two novel audio watermarking, techniques and one graphic watermarking technique in these special sessions. We will also have one paper in the database system. The papers are briefly summarized.

We develop an algorithm for t-error correcting/d-error detecting and all unidirectional error detecting (t-EC/d-ED/AUED) codes in the framework of a neural network. As t-EC/d-ED/AUED codewords are formed by concatenation of information bits and one or more groups of check bits, depending on how we want to construct code, we demonstrate neural network algorithms for constructing, detecting and correcting codes. We present an example for 2EC/5ED/AUED code I only due to the limitation of length of the paper.

Presents a QoS (quality of service) scheduler that assigns bandwidth over a wireless channel such that the amount of energy spent by a mobile device is minimized, while maintaining the QoS of the connections. Energy efficiency is an important issue for mobile computers, since they must rely on their batteries. We have designed and implemented an energy-efficient architecture and MAC protocol for wireless multimedia traffic. The scheduling is based on two mechanisms: (1) short-term transmission frame scheduling that concatenates the uplink and downlink traffic of a mobile device, and (2) long-term scheduling that tries to collect traffic as much as possible within the QoS requirements of the connections. The result is that the transceiver can be in a low-power operating mode for an extended period of time and that the number of operating mode transitions is reduced.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the USA. A large, shared skin cancer image database on the Internet would be quite valuable to both medical professionals and consumers. In this paper, such a database is created using a three-tier system: a client application implemented in Java applets, a Web server and a back-end database server. JDBC-ODBC is used for the Web server to communicate with the database server. Various browsing and content-based retrieval methods are supported for the skin cancer image database through Web-based graphical user interfaces. A data mining algorithm for finding association rules between different features of the skin cancer images is also implemented.

The MPEG-4 visual standard supports the trend in video object segmentation for the spatial segmentation process in only one way. Therefore, this paper presents the spatial segmentation process according to MPEG-4. The spatial segmentation includes the image simplification, gradient operation and watershed algorithm. This paper presents the morphological tools to use in the segmentation process. Firstly, the morphological filters are used to simplify the image by the open-close operation by partial reconstruction while preserving the boundary information. Secondly, the multiscale gradient operator is used to reduce the oversegmentation and also preserve the homogeneous region boundary. This simplification and labeling of the region method give the homogeneous region and the small number of regions. Finally, the uncertain pixels are reduced for use with the watershed algorithm.

We present two new invertible watermarking methods for authentication of digital images in the JPEG format. While virtually all previous authentication watermarking schemes introduced some small amount of non-invertible distortion in the image, the new methods are invertible in the sense that, if the image is deemed authentic, the distortion due to authentication can be completely removed to obtain the original image data. The first technique is based on lossless compression of biased bit-streams derived from the quantized JPEG coefficients. The second technique modifies the quantization matrix to enable lossless embedding of one bit per DCT coefficient. Both techniques are fast and can be used for general distortion-free (invertible) data embedding. The new methods provide new information assurance tools for integrity protection of sensitive imagery, such as medical images or high-importance military images viewed under non-standard conditions when usual criteria for visibility do not apply.

The authors propose a scalable video coding algorithm for low bit rate failure-free video transmission. In the failure-free video transmission, two channels are utilized to transmit the same video source. In the receiver, the video can be reconstructed by any single encoded bitstream. While receiving two encoded bitstreams, the image quality can be improved by combining two bitstreams. We develop a motion vector refinement technique to improve the image quality. In the encoder, the positions of the macroblocks for channel two are shifted by eight pixels from channel one. In the receiver, the motion vectors transmitted in each channel can be refined to more accurate motion vectors with smaller block size when two channels are received. The final decoded image is merged from the two reconstructed images by the two channels. Experimental results show our proposed method has high efficiency and high reliability.

Discusses current work using an adaptive learning algorithm to dynamically create the content of an e-commerce search engine so that the implicit knowledge extracted by the Web text mining module can be provided in the B2B (business-to-business) portal. In this paper, we develop an algorithmic approach for automatically discovering implicit customer knowledge from the Internet by means of a Web mining method. Using a variation of the automatic thesaurus generation techniques, namely the self-organizing map (SOM) neural net, we have conducted several experiments in a specific domain in which we created a functional thesaurus of numerous supplier- and product-specific terms. Further, we applied such a thesaurus in a topic hierarchy-based text database, as an organized text source of a search engine for a novel B2B e-commerce portal.

This paper proposes a modification of the flexible multi-pulse based code excited linear predictive (MP-CELP) coder with bit rate scalabilities for tonal language speech in multimedia applications. The coder consists of a core coder and bit rate scalable tools. The high pitch delay resolutions are applied to the adaptive codebook of the core coder for tonal language speech quality improvement. The bit rate scalable tool employs multi-stage excitation coding based on an embedded-coding approach. The multi-pulse excitation codebook at each stage is adaptively produced depending on the selected excitation signal ut the previous stage. The experimental results show that the speech quality of the proposed coder is improved compared to that of the conventional coder without pitch-resolution adaptation.

To reduce the amount of computation of the full search (FS) algorithm for fast motion estimation, we propose a new and fast matching algorithm without degradation of predicted images as in conventional FS. The computational reduction without any degradation in the predicted image comes from fast removal of impossible motion vectors. We obtain faster removal of inappropriate motion vectors using efficient matching units from the localization of complex area in image data. In this paper, we show three properties in block matching of motion estimation. Experimentally, we reduce unnecessary computations by about 30% with our algorithm compared with the conventional fast matching scan algorithm.
