With the rapid development of information technology and the Internet, the sharp increase in the amount of information storage and transmission has brought great challenges to the security of secret information. More and more security issues such as channel eavesdropping and information theft force people to actively explore encryption and decryption technologies. Digital image is one of the most important information types. It is regarded as the most significant media in people's everyday network communication, containing the largest amount of information. Due to its amount of data and its data redundancy, digital image must be effectively compressed to achieve high-speed transmission and storage. The traditional digital image transmission schemes are often encryption-after-compression algorithms. As a matter of fact, the combination of the two can not only ensure the unity of the algorithm, but also enhance the security of the algorithm, which brings a good opportunity for the joint compression and encryption of digital image. Based on the existing academic literature, this paper reviews the major state-of-the-art compression-combined digital image encryption techniques. This literature review focuses on explaining how the two are combined, as well as their advantages and limitations evaluated through information entropy, rather than separately introducing the industrial technical details of compression and encryption. Pure compression schemes or pure encryption algorithms will not be discussed. Finally, this paper proposes existing problems based on the advantages and limitations of current compression-combined digital image encryption techniques. Interesting and insightful future research directions are presented as well.

The paper presents a novel approach for enhancing data security and efficiency using a hybrid cryptography model that is Advanced encryption Standard (AES) and Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) with steganography and compression techniques to conceal the encrypted data within image file, also compression technique applied to reduce storage usage. The system employs AES for secure data encryption due to its fast encryption time and reliability, while ECC is utilized for encrypting AES keys, benefiting from ECC’s lower computational demands and smaller key sizes, which offer secure key exchange. Further to mask the encrypted data, steganography is implemented with inverted least significant bit (LSB) technique. Additionally, the model incorporates the WebP compression algorithm to reduce the overall data size, to facilitate data transmission efficiently without losing data integrity or security. Experimental results of research indicate that the system not only secures data effectively but also preserves the visual quality of digital carrier images. The steganalysis shows the performance of the proposed system performed is quantified by a Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) of 68.90 and a Mean Squared Error (MSE) OF 0.0083, reflecting minimal and acceptable degradation in image quality. These metrics show the system’s capability to maintain excellent image fidelity post encryption and embedding, confirming its reliability for secure communication applications where maintaining data integrity and efficiency is crucial. © 2025 IEEE.

The paper presents a reversible data hiding method with image compression consisting of Huffman coding and block encrypted. In the proposed approach, the image is used to compressed for generating the specified space for hiding the secret messages. When the secret message is extracted from the image, the location of the secret message is obtained through the image information hiding structure and Huffman coding table. After message extracting and image decryption, the image could be recovered to the original image. Experimental results show that our proposed method can achieve image recovering and have better hiding payload than that of related works. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Optical digital dual image encryption scheme based on fast Fourier symmetry fusion and bit-level compression

Digital images serve as vital components of contemporary communication systems, yet their prevalence intensifies privacy risks. To ensure secure transmission, image encryption technology has become a crucial solution. This paper thoroughly examines the dual-image encryption problem and introduces an innovative hybrid scheme that integrates optical and digital image encryption. The scheme consists of two main parts. In the first part, the Fast Fourier Symmetry Fusion encryption Method(FFSFEM) is proposed, which involves processing two plaintext images using the Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) and then fusing them. The resulting fused images are then subjected to an inverse Fast Fourier Transform(iFFT) followed by bit-level compression, yielding two images, the real part and the imaginary part. This part can be operated in a 4f optical system. In the second part, the pixels of both the real and imaginary images are diffused and confused, leading to the generation of the encrypted images. The results are: correlation coefficient is almost 0, average information entropy = 7.9993 bits, average NPCR = 99.6127%, average UACI = 33.5510% and it is able to resist selective plaintext attack. The proposed algorithm is verified to have strong security and encryption performance in terms of simulation experiments and security analysis. © 2025 IOP Publishing Ltd. Securing sensitive visual data is essential in the digital age. Our research presents a sophisticated model of image encryption that combines RNA pixel conversion with an autoencoder. A convolutional neural network (CNN) is used for efficient feature extraction. Convolutional encoding and RNA pixel conversion, which map pixels to RNA sequences (Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine, Uracil) enabling stronger encryption, are the model’s primary innovations. By guaranteeing that every encryption instance is distinct, this dynamic technique strengthens security. Our approach ensures security and picture integrity by demonstrating robust encryption capabilities with minimum reconstruction loss (0.0617), as tested on the MNIST dataset. Furthermore, the encryption procedure is optimized by a fractional order optimizer, FGL_Adam, which incorporates weight decay, learning rate modifications, and a security improvement factor. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The exponential growth of communication technologies has broadened the cloud computing ecosystem horizon to meet main communication needs. However, in-parallel upsurge in online attacks has alarmed industries to ensure optimal data security. The combination of steganography and cryptosystems has been recognized as an enhanced security model for data transfer among the main security systems now in use. In this paper, a hybrid approach using cryptography and K- Least Significant Bit Steganography algorithm in Cloud Computing (HYBC-KLSBS-CC) are proposed. Initially, input text data is retrieved from cloud storage and compressed using Huffman compression Coding (HCC) to reduce data size. The compressed data is then encrypted with a Hybrid Cryptography Algorithm (Hyb-MRFC-ALC), combining Modified Random Fibonacci Cryptography and Asymmetric Lightweight Cryptography to ensure robust encryption. Finally, encrypted data is embedded within an image using the K-Least Significant Bit (KLSB) steganography technique, providing additional layer of security. The proposed method enhances data confidentiality, integrity, and storage efficiency in cloud environments. The proposed HYBC-KLSBS-CC approach attains 26.89%, 29.49% and 18.64% lower PSNR and 26.89%, 29.49% and 18.64% lower MSE when analyzed through existing techniques like data security dependent on cryptography steganography related with OTP procedure and Huffman coding in the cloud environment (CS-OTP-CE), a novel hybrid cryptographic framework for secure data storage in cloud computing: Integrating AES-OTP and RSA with adaptive key management and Time-Limited access control (AES-OTP-RSA-CC) and Crypto-Stegno dependent model for securing medical information on IOMT platform (CS-SMI-IOMT).

Survey on JPEG compatible joint image compression and encryption algorithms

In recent years, image encryption has been broadly researched. Since a large proportion of images on Internet are compressed, and JPEG is the most widely adopted standards for image compression, a variety of joint image compression and encryption algorithms have been proposed. JPEG image encryption uses signal processing techniques as well as cryptographic techniques in different stages of the JPEG compression process. Based on the location where the encryption is taken place, these algorithms can be generally classified into three major categories: pre-compression encryption algorithms, in-compression encryption algorithms, and post-compression encryption algorithms, which correspond to conduct encryption operations before, during, and after the compression process. From this perspective of classification, the authors give a comprehensive survey on representative image encryption algorithms of each type, and show their properties and limitations. Some of the most recent encryption schemes that achieve protection at various positions of the compression process are selected for comparison, which are two pre-compression encryption algorithms, four in-compression encryption algorithms, and two post-compression encryption algorithms. Possible future research directions on designing joint JPEG compression and encryption schemes are provided in the end, which may facilitate solving application scenario-oriented JPEG security problems with new technologies.
