This paper focuses on novel image reconstruction method based on modified exemplar-based technique. The basic idea is to find an example (patch) from an image using local binary patterns, and replacing non-existed (`lost') data with it. We propose to use multiple criteria for a patch similarity search since often in practice existed exemplar-based methods produce unsatisfactory results. The criteria for searching the best matching uses several terms, including Euclidean metric for pixel brightness and Chi-squared histogram matching distance for local binary patterns. A combined use of textural geometric characteristics together with color information allows to get more informative description of the patches. Texture synthesis method proposed by Efros and Freeman for patch restoration is utilized in the proposed method. It allows optimizing an overlap region between patches using minimum error boundary cut. Several examples considered in this paper show the effectiveness of the proposed approach for large objects removal as well as recovery of small regions on several test images.

Context. The planetary system discovered around the young A-type HR8799 provides a unique laboratory to: a) test planet formation theories;b) probe the diversity of system architectures at these separations, and c) perform comparative (exo)planetology. Aims. We present and exploit new near-infrared images and integral-field spectra of the four gas giants surrounding HR8799 obtained with SPHERE, the new planet finder instrument at the very Large Telescope, during the commissioning and science verification phase of the instrument (July-December 2014). With these new data, we contribute to completing the spectral energy distribution (SED) of these bodies in the 1.0-2.5 mu m range. We also provide new astrometric data, in particular for planet e, to further constrain the orbits. Methods. We used the infrared dual-band imager and spectrograph (IRDIS) subsystem to obtain pupil-stabilized, dual-band H2H3 (1.593 mu m, 1.667 mu m), K1K2 (2.110 mu m, 2.251 mu m), and broadband J (1.245 mu m) images of the four planets. IRDIS was operated in parallel with the integral field spectrograph (IFS) of SPHERE to collect low-resolution (R similar to 30), near-infrared (0.94-1.64 mu m) spectra of the two innermost planets HR8799 d and e. The data were reduced with dedicated algorithms, such as the Karhunen-Loeve image projection (KLIP), to reveal the planets. We used the so-called negative planets injection technique to extract their photometry, spectra, and measure their positions. We illustrate the astrometric performance of SPHERE through sample orbital fits compatible with SPHERE and literature data. Results. We demonstrated the ability of SPHERE to detect and characterize planets in this kind of systems, providing spectra and photometry of its components. The spectra improve upon the signal-to-noise ratio of previously obtained data and increase the spectral coverage down to the Y band. The paper provides an overview of the terrain survey realized on the base of the Russian small space vehicle (Sv) "Canopus-v". The on-ground information technology for the Sv's data processing is considered. The suggested technology includes the primary processing of the telemetric stream data, cataloguing of survey routs and forming output information products on different standard levels. The paper does briefly describe the algorithms of cloud object detection and navigation measurement processing. Besides, the paper describes the types of output information products distributed to consumers.

Major issues faced by camera captured document analysis is to deal with the page curl and perspective distortions. Perspective distortion occurs when the world plane is not parallel to the imaging plane. This causes parallel lines to become non-parallel and the objects which are far away from the camera to seem smaller. Rectification is an unavoidable process on images with perspective distortion for precise representation. No standard measures for the performance evaluation of rectification algorithms exists with most of the evaluation done to concentrate in visual pleasing impressions. OCR based evaluation methods perform well for evaluation of rectification in text regions, but they fail to measure the performance of rectification algorithm on the non-text regions like mathematical equations, graphics, or tables. Feature based methods, on the other hand require manual assistance. An image based performance evaluation of rectification algorithms using SIFT(Scale Invariant Feature Transform) features was reported earlier. In this paper, a new method for performance evaluation using SURF(Speeded-Up Robust Features) features is proposed, which is more efficient and 12.07 times faster than SIFT based method according to the obtained results.

Many problems in signal processing and statistical inference are based on finding a sparse solution to an undetermined linear system. The reference approach to this problem of finding sparse signal representations, on overcomplete dictionaries leads to convex unconstrained optimization problems, with a quadratic term l(2), for the adjustment to the observed signal and a coefficient vector l(1)-norm. This work focus algorithms development and experimental analysis for the solution of l(q) - l(p) optimization problems, where p, q is an element of [0, 2], of which l(2) - l(1) is an instance. The l(q)-norm, with q < 2, in the data term, gives statistical robustness to the approximation criterion. The developed algorithms belongs to the majorization-minimization class, where the solution of the problem is given by the minimization of a progression of majorizers of the original function. Each iteration corresponds to the solution of an l(2) - l(1) problem. These are reformulated as quadratic programming problems and solved by the projected gradient algorithm. When tested on synthetic data and image reconstruction problems, the results of implemented algorithms shows a good performance both in compressed sensing and signal restoration scenarios.

Solving real world problems with embedded neural networks requires both training algorithms that achieve high performance and compatible hardware that runs in real time while remaining energy efficient. For the former, deep learning using backpropagation has recently achieved a string of successes across many domains and datasets. For the latter, neuromorphic chips that run spiking neural networks have recently achieved unprecedented energy efficiency. To bring these two advances together, we must first resolve the incompatibility between backpropagation, which uses continuous-output neurons and synaptic weights, and neuromorphic designs, which employ spiking neurons and discrete synapses. Our approach is to treat spikes and discrete synapses as continuous probabilities, which allows training the network using standard backpropagation. The trained network naturally maps to neuromorphic hardware by sampling the probabilities to create one or more networks, which are merged using ensemble averaging. To demonstrate, we trained a sparsely connected network that runs on the TrueNorth chip using the MNIST dataset. With a high performance network (ensemble of 64), we achieve 99.42% accuracy at 108 μJ per image, and with a high efficiency network (ensemble of 1) we achieve 92.7% accuracy at 0.268 μJ per image.

Edge-preserving Intra mode for efficient depth map coding based on H.264/AvC

Depth-image-based-rendering (DIBR) algorithms for 3D video communication systems based on the "multi-view video plus depth" format are very sensitive to the accuracy of depth information. Specifically, edge regions in the depth data should be preserved in the coding/decoding process to ensure good view synthesis performance, which directly affects the overall system performance. This paper proposes a novel scheme for edge-aware Intra depth compression based on the H.264/AvC framework enabled on both Intra (I) and Inter (P) slices. The proposed scheme includes a new Intra mode specifically targeted to depth macroblocks with arbitrarily shaped edges, which are typically not predicted well by the standard Intra modes of H.264/AvC and result in high rate-distortion costs. The proposed algorithm segments edge macroblocks into two regions each approximated by a flat surface. A binary mask identifying the two regions is defined and encoded by means of context-coding with adaptive template selection. As a novel contribution, the proposed mode allows exploiting the correlation with causal neighboring edge macroblocks to improve the performance of context-coding of binary masks and allow significant bit rate savings. The proposed method has been exhaustively compared with different state-of-the-art algorithms for edge-aware depth coding and the results highlight significant improvements in most of the cases, both in terms of reconstructed depth quality, view synthesis performance, and overall texture plus depth rate-distortion performance. Due to independence of weather condition and sun illumination, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has been widely used in airborne remote sensing and satellite ocean observation fields. With the increase in swath and higher resolution requirements, SAR imaging algorithms require further study. However, as a research support, echo data has massive increase. So the high efficient echo simulation is required emergently. SAR echo simulation is optimized to accelerate, based on AvX/SSE of vector instruction set and OpenMP. Experiments demonstrate that in the case of using OpenMP and AvX/SSE combined, CPU simulation efficiency is improved by about 23 times, compared to the traditional one.

In this era of Internet of Things, wherein every `thing' is integrated within the existing internet architecture, it becomes quite necessary that embedded computing systems process quickly, occupy less area and consume low power. This would enable them to work quickly with real time data and have a large shelf life. As such there is a need for development of optimized algorithms and their efficient implementation in hardware. This paper presents a novel architecture for obtaining DCTQ coefficients suitable for FPGA Implementation. The design is highly parallel and pipelined so as to exploit the massive parallelism of FPGAs and occupies considerably less area (4,244/9,312) with a very high processing speed (148.192 MHz).

Tuberculosis is a disease with one of the most leading causes of deaths in the world, however, its fatality index could be reduced if it is diagnosed and treated on time. The Ziehl-Neelsen stained sputum smear method is the most used for bacilli detection and for developing a proper diagnosis by the specialist. Nevertheless, these stained images do not always present an adequate contrast, then, the elaboration of a reliable diagnosis is a complex, time consuming and a difficult process. This research proposes an alternative method to perform automatic bacilli segmentation in Ziehl-Neelsen images using Adaptive Signal processing techniques, like the Least Mean Squares and Reduced Rank with Eigendecomposition algorithms. The quantitative results achieved, in correlation and true positives detection, are encouraging and suggest the use of this approach as a feasible alternative, when compared with the classical segmentation techniques, for automatic bacilli segmentation in the Ziehl-Neelsen images.
