image processing and image analysis tasks have large data processing requirements and inherent parallelism and are well suited to implementation on digital optical processors because of the parallelism and free interconnection capabilities of optical systems. Recently, several techniques for constructing optical cellular logic processors for image processing have been proposed. Through parallel studies of architectures, algorithms, mathematical structures, and optics we have found that: 1) cellular automata are appropriate models for parallel image processing machines;2) an image algebra extending from mathematical morphology can lead to a formal parallel language approach to the design of image processing algorithms;3) the algebraic structure serves as a framework for both algorithms and architectures of parallel image processing;and 4) optical computing techniques are able to implement image algebra based on cellular logic architecture. We discuss image algebra and architectures for its implementation.

Efficient parallel algorithms are presented for image template matching on hypercube SIMD (single instruction, multiple data) machine of sizes N**2, N**2 multiplied by M**2 and N**2 multiplied by K**2 processing elements. For a N multiplied by N image and M multiplied by M window with N**2 PEs, a simple optimal parallel algorithm with O(M**2 plus log N) time is given. The N**2 multiplied by M**2-PEs case is solved in O(log N) time and the N**2 multiplied by K**2-PEs case is solved in O(M**2/K**2 plus log N) time. A parallel algorithm for the N**2-PEs case is designed using constant space/PE that runs in O(M**2* log*** (M) plus log N) time. All the algorithms have superior time performance compared to known results and are shown to be optimal.

An eye-tracking system has been specially designed for recording the eye movements of the visitors to a museum. The purpose is to provide the public with a direct experimental demonstration of how saccades and fixations contribute to the process of vision. Servo systems, image processing algorithms and interactive procedures allow the eye tracker to operate on a naive public without any technical supervision.

During the past several years, the concepts and techniques of two-dimensional grammars1,2 have attracted growing attention as promising avenues of approach to problems in picture generation as well as in picture description3 representation, recognition, transformation and manipulation. Two-dimensional grammar techniques serve the purpose of exploiting the structure or underlying relationships in a picture. This approach attempts to describe a complex picture in terms of their components and their relative positions. This resembles the way a sentence is described in terms of its words and phrases, and the terms structural picture recognition, linguistic picture recognition, or syntactic picture recognition are often used. By using this approach, the problem of picture recognition becomes similar to that of phrase recognition in a language. © 1987 SPIE. All rights reserved.

Many algorithms for the matching of stereo edges between two images have been proposed, each of which uses constraints to help select valid matches. However, each of these constraints fails in some circumstances. To address this problem, the general support algorithm is proposed for integrating multiple constraints in parallel using a connectionist network. The constraints are implemented using only positive connections between matches. The use of multiple constraints allows each to be implemented more conservatively, thus applying them where they provide the most accurate information. The iterations of the network allow the constraints to interact cooperatively to select the valid matches. A simulation of the network has been developed, and preliminary results on synthetic images are presented.

Cellular-logic (or morphological) operations such as erosion, dilation, contour extraction, propagation, skeletonization, local majority voting, and pepper-and-salt noise removal are essential tools in processing and measuring binary images. This paper describes the design and implementation of a Cellular Logic Processor module for use in vME-bus oriented image-processing systems. The Cellular-Logic Operators are implemented in a general way by table look-up, while using specialized hardware for address-generation, neighbourhood updating and bit-plane combination. The on-board memory accomodates four binary images (bitplanes) of 256 × 256 pixels each. The processor works at a 7.2 MHz pixel rate, performing a logical combination of two bitplanes, followed by a cellular-logic operation in a total of 9.2 ms. © 1986 SPIE. All rights reserved.

Enhancements to array processors in the form of broadcast buses have been proposed for improving the speeds of algorithms in linear algebra, image processing and computational geometry. In this paper, we consider certain practical issues in such arrays which include fewer processors connected to the broadcast buses and finite time, namely log N time for broadcasting data to N processors. We propose a modified broadcast bus vLSI architecture which consists of a √N × √N mesh connected structure and a hierarchy of broadcast buses in each row and in each column such that every bus has k PE's. That is, in any row or column, in the first level there are √N/k buses with groups of k PE's connected to each bus. One PE from each of this group is connected to second level of buses in a similar manner. This is recursively done until there are only k PE's left which are connected by a broadcast bus. With this architecture, maximum, minimum, or sum of N values can be found in O(log N), median row of a binary picture in O(log N), shortest distance between two points in O(log N). This architecture is well suited for parallel processing of applications in Linear Algebra, image processing, Computational Geometry and Numerical Computations. These restricted connections to buses reduces the I/O ports significantly, and therefore, is more suitable for vLSI implementation. © 1986, Springer-verlag.

The project described is concerned with interfacing between the computer knowledge based system and the real world in the areas of speech recognition and image recognition and understanding. At the upper level the system will consist of knowledge processing while the lower levels will consist of preprocessing and feature extraction. The paper discusses hardware and algorithmic aspects of the system. The systems need to operate in near real time and so providing processing power is a key feature of the work.
