Since the statistical nature of radar imagery differs from that of photographic imagery, one finds that the required digital imageprocessingalgorithms (e. g. , for improved viewing and feature extraction) differ from those currently existing. This paper addresses these problems and discusses work at the Remote Sensing Laboratory in image simulation and processing, especially for systems comparable to the formerly operational SEASAT synthetic aperture radar.

Different remote sensing systems are considered for earth resource evaluation. Digital processing techniques, which can be applied to remote sen sing data to extract useful final results, are presented: digital filtering, enhancement, restoration, data compression, pattern recognition. Special algorithms of two-dimensional digital filtering are in more details described for image enhancement, noise reduction. A new digital technique to compare and correlate earth maps obtained from remote sensing detectors at different heights, as aboard aircrafts and satellites, is also presented. The application of the above digital processing techniques, in particular of digital filters and local space operators, to remote sensing data related to Tuscany in Italy is described. By processing aircraft photos, land classification for agriculture is shown with evaluation of oil and wine resources. By processing LANDSAT maps, water resource evaluations are finally shown.

Walsh-Hadamard matrices are rearranged such that the first half of the rows represents cal functions in increasing order of sequency whereas the second half represents sal functions in decreasing order of sequency. The transform based on this rearrangement is called the Cal-Sal Walsh-Hadamard transform or (WHT) cs . General expressions for developing the elements of these matrices are developed. These matrices are decomposed into sparse matrix factors which lead directly to the fast algorithms similar to those for other forms of the WHT. The (WHT) cs is useful in mapping an even or odd sequence since, in this case, at least one-half of the transform components will be zero.

The II international workshop on "Data Analysis in Astronomy" was intended to provide an overview on the state of the art and the trend in data analy sis and imageprocessing in the context of their applications in Astronomy. The need for the organization of a second workshop in this subject derived from the steady. growing and development in the field and from the increasing cross-interaction between methods, technology and applications in Astronomy. The book is organized in four main sections: - Data Analysis Methodologies - Data Handling and systems dedicated to Large Experiments - Parallel processing - New Developments The topics which have been selected cover some of the main fields in data analysis in Astronomy. Methods that provide a major contribution to the physical interpretation of the data have been considered. Attention has been devoted to the description of the data analysis and handling organization in very large experiments. A review of the current major satellite and ground based experiments has been included. At the end of the book the following 'Panel Discussions' are included: - Data Analysis Trend in Optical and Radio Astronomy - Data Analysis Trend in X and Gamma Astronomy - Problems and Solutions in the Design of very Large Experiments - Trend on Parallel processingalgorithms These contributions in a sense summarize the 'live' reaction of the audience to the various topics.

Recently, much attention has been paid to imageprocessing with multiresolution and hierarchical structures such as pyramids and trees. This volume deals with recursive pyramids, which combine the advantages of available multiresolution structures and which are convenient both for global and local imageprocessing. Recursive pyramids are based on regular hierarchical (recursive) structures containing data on image fragments of different sizes. Such an image representation technique enables the effective manipulation of pictorial information as well as the development of special hardware or data structures. The major aspects of this book are two original mathematical models of greyscale and binary images represented by recursive structures. image compression, transmission and processing are discussed using these models. A number of applications are presented, including optical character recognition, expert systems and special computer architecture for pictorial data processing. The majority of results are presented as algorithms applicable to discrete information fields of arbitrary dimensions (e.g. 2-D or 3-D images).;The book is divided into six chapters: Chapter 1 provides a brief introduction. Chapter 2 then deals with recursive structures and their properties. Chapter 3 introduces pyramidal image models. image coding and the progressive transmission of images with gradual refinement are discussed in Chapter 4. Chapters 5 and 6 are devoted to imageprocessing with pyramidal-recursive structures and applications. The volume concludes with a comprehensive bibliography.;For applied mathematicians and computer scientists whose work involves computer vision, information theory and other aspects of image representation techniques.

This book presents refereed and revised papers presented at GREC 2001, the 4th IAPR International Workshop on Graphics Recognition, which took place in Kingston, Ontario, Canada in September 2001. Graphics recognition is a branch of document image analysis that focuses on the recognition of two-dimensional notations such as engineering drawings, maps, mathematical notation, music notation, tables, and chemical structure diagrams. Due to the growing demand for both o?-line and on-line document recognition systems, the ?eld of graphics recognition has an excitingand promisingfuture. The GREC workshops provide an opportunity for researchers at all levels of experience to share insights into graphics recognition methods. The workshops enjoy strongparticipation from researchers in both industry and academia. They are sponsored by IAPR TC-10, the Technical Committee on Graphics Recog- tion within the International Association for Pattern Recognition. Edited v- umes from the previous three workshops in this series are available as Lecture Notes in Computer Science, vols. 1072, 1389, and 1941. After the GREC 2001 workshop, authors were invited to submit enhanced versions of their papers for review. Every paper was evaluated by three reviewers. We are grateful to both authors and reviewers for their careful work during this review process. Many of the papers that appear in this volume were thoroughly revised and improved, in response to reviewers’ suggestions.
