Radar-based sensing emerges as a promising alternative to cameras and wearable devices for indoor human activity recognition. Unlike wearables, radar sensors offer non-contact and unobtrusive monitoring, while being insensitive to lighting conditions and preserving privacy as compared to cameras. This paper addresses the task of continuous and sequential classification of daily life activities, unlike the problem to isolate distinct motions in isolation. Upon acquiring raw radar data containing sequences of motions, an event detection algorithm, the Short-Time-Average/Long-Time-Average (STA/LTA) algorithm, is utilized to detect individual motion segments. By recognizing breaks between transitions from one motion type to another, the STA/LTA detector isolates individual activity segments. To ensure consistent input shapes for activities of varying durations, image resizing and cropping techniques are employed. Furthermore, data augmentation techniques are applied to modify micro-Doppler signatures, enhancing the classification system's robustness and providing additional data for training.

This research reviews the current state of vision-based assistive solutions for the visually impaired (vi). The paper focuses primarily on camera-based assistive system solutions. We focused the review on vision-based assistive solutions proposed for vi people. The sensors, image processing algorithms, and wireless communication protocols employed in the survey have been summarised. Acoustic output devices were used in addition to cameras, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), and Global Positioning System (GPS). vision-based assistive solutions have evolved from traditional image processing techniques to machine learning to deep learning for assistance for vi users. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices are the most common wireless technologies used by vision-based assistive systems. The literature does not adequately leverage the optimization of deep learning models for edge devices.

Object tracking is a widely used algorithm in image processing. When tracking objects on thermal images, however, issues, such as changes in size, temporary occlusion, lack of prominent features, and active thermal noise, are frequently encountered. This article proposes using Multi-Processor System on Chip (MPSoC) technology to implement new tracking algorithms on programmable hardware platforms to increase the computational speed. This real-time algorithm will combine the superiority of existing object tracking algorithms, such as Camshift, Kalman, and Optical Flow, to overcome the difficulties mentioned above. © 2022 Institute of Electronics and Information Engineers. Identifying and mapping corrosion represents a significant challenge in maintaining oil production systems. Mechanical and chemical phenomena, such as abrasion and hydrogen attack, cause corrosion on the internal surface of pipes. Knowing the dimensions of corrosion enables technicians to make decisions about the structural stability of pipelines under operating conditions. Using ultrasound imaging is a non-destructive approach to assessing the state of internal surfaces. We present a web application for processing ultrasound signals and image reconstruction. However, it can be used in any non-destructive ultrasound inspection application. The software is developed mainly in Python and Typescript, using a different approach than conventional web applications. Instead of using a standard structure, with the front-end running in the browser and the back-end running the data processing on a remote server, our application runs entirely on the browser through Pyodide, a Python distribution for the browser and *** based on WebAssembly whilst the server side only hosts the web application files. The application is divided into modules for (i) graphical interface, (ii) reading inspection files, (iii) signal preprocessing, (iv) estimation of inspection parameters, (v) external surface detection (for inspection by immersion), and (vi) image reconstruction. The web application allows Python script execution and offers a user-friendly interface for running image reconstruction algorithms. This paper describes the development of critical features and indicates the chosen implementation of algorithms. The current state of development is presented, and the next steps toward the ultimate goal of corrosion mapping are defined.

Long range horizontal path imaging through atmospheric turbulence is hampered by spatiotemporally randomly varying shifting and blurring of scene points in recorded imagery. Software mitigation strategies have been developed to produce sharp and stable imagery. However, it remains challenging to correct video disturbed by turbulence in real time. Real time implementation of turbulence mitigation will search for compromises between processing performance and corrected image quality. In this paper we compare the quality of real time turbulence mitigation to the results of non-real-time algorithms that should provide a higher image quality. The paper presents the method for the data collection and the results of the comparison on different scenarios relevant in an operational context. © 2023 SPIE.

We present a novel waveguide-integrated eye tracking system for smart glasses, offering a compact and aesthetically pleasing solution by embedding the eye tracking camera within the temple of the eyewear. The system features a front-view capturing capability, enabled by the waveguide, which minimize distortion and occlusion while ensuring consistent imaging conditions. Waveguide systems typically face challenges such as low light efficiency, which introduces white noise, degrading image quality and tracking performance. To address this, we employed lightweight image processing algorithms, including a neural network-based pupil segmentation model to extract elliptical parameters, center positions, shape, and orientation, from noisy, low-resolution images, enabling accurate and robust gaze estimation. In controlled benchtop experiments using an eyeball robot, the system demonstrated promising performance, achieving a mean gaze error of approximately 1 degree, validating its capability to maintain precision despite the challenges associated with waveguide optics. Variability in feature extraction was observed near the edge region of the target object space, emphasizing the need for refinements in waveguide design and feature extraction algorithms. Overall, the proposed waveguide-integrated eye tracking system represents a significant advancement by seamlessly incorporating eye tracking technology into everyday eyewear. Its design maintains user comfort and aesthetics while achieving the precision required for AR/VR applications, enabling intuitive and reliable user interaction. © 2025 SPIE.

Player tracking is a useful tool for tactical analysis and performance evaluation in soccer, providing valuable insights into player movements and team dynamics. This project investigates the feasibility of tracking players using UAVcaptured imagery, employing both YOLO and traditional image processing algorithms (TIPA). Initial validation focuses on robot soccer players due to their predictable and controllable movements. The comparative analysis considers processing time, computational cost, adaptability to environmental changes, sensitivity to lighting variations, ability to handle dynamic conditions, tracking accuracy, and real-time performance. Results indicate that, under equivalent hardware and preparation time conditions, YOLO achieves performance comparable to traditional techniques. Nonetheless, the selection of the most suitable approach should be guided by task-specific demands, available computational resources, and the time allocated for system development and deployment.

images captured in surveillance systems suffer from low contrast and faint color. Recently, plenty of dehazing algorithms have been proposed to enhance visibility and restore color. We present a new image enhancement algorithm based on multi-scale block-rooting processing. The basic idea is to apply the frequency domain image enhancement approach for different image block scales. The parameter of transform coefficient enhancement for every block is driven through optimization of measure of enhancement. The main idea is that enhancing the contrast of an image would create more high-frequency content in the enhanced image than the original image. To test the performance of the proposed algorithm, the public database O-HAZE is used.

Safety-critical infrastructures, such as bridges, are periodically inspected to check for existing damage, such as fatigue cracks and corrosion, and to guarantee the safe use of the infrastructure. visual inspection is the most frequent type of general inspection, despite the fact that its detection capability is rather limited, especially for fatigue cracks. Machine learning algorithms can be used for augmenting the capability of classical visual inspection of bridge structures, however, the implementation of such an algorithm requires a massive annotated training dataset, which is time-consuming to produce. This paper proposes a semi-automatic crack segmentation tool that eases the manual segmentation of cracks on images needed to create a training dataset for machine learning algorithm. Also it can be used to measure the geometry of the crack. This tool makes use of an image processing algorithm, which was initially developed for the analysis of vascular systems on retinal images. The algorithm relies on a multi-orientation wavelet transform, which is applied to the image to construct the so-called ‘orientation scores’, i.e. a modified version of the image. Afterwards, the filtered orientation scores are used to formulate an optimal path problem that identifies the crack. The globally optimal path between manually selected crack endpoints is computed, using a state-of-the-art geometric tracking method. The pixel-wise segmentation is done afterwards using the obtained crack path. The proposed method outperforms fully automatic methods and shows potential to be an adequate alternative to the manual data annotation. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Surface quality of optical lenses is an important parameter to achieve optimal imaging quality. Surface imperfections such as scratches, pits, or digs which may be caused during manufacturing or handling induce light scattering and degrade the overall performance of the imaging system. For a lightweight lens, the pockets behind the lens will affect the defect judgment due to excellent optical transmittance. This article discusses the measurement flow of automatic optical inspection for large lenses, defect detection algorithm, and the practicality of application of this technique for inspection of large lenses. Surface defect detection module comprises of high dynamic range camera combined with telecentric imaging lens creating an imaging system with resolution of 2.7 μm. Inspection of the whole surface before and after coating is carried out through concentric scanning and different illustrating angles. The images are captured with a 20% overlap between two consecutive images to ensure complete coverage of the whole surface. image processing algorithms are applied to detect and classify any surface defects on the surface. Detection results consists of exact size, type, and location of the defects are analyzed by the system and summarized into an inspection report. Compared to classical manual inspection this system provides reproducible and objective detection results and allows users to perform revalidation after measurement is finished. © 2025 SPIE.
