Sensor fusion can be performed either on the raw sensor output or after a segmentation step has been done. Our previous work has concentrated on neural network models for sensor fusion after segmentation. Although this method has been shown to be fast and reliable, there is still the overhead entailed from using entire images. The wavelet transform is a multiresolution method that is used to decompose images into detail and average channels. These channels maintain all of the image information and sensor fusion logic operations can be done within the wavelet coefficient space. In addition, image compression can be done within this same space for possible remote transmission. This paper examines sensor fusion within the wavelet coefficient space. The results of some experimental studies performed on the 1024 node NCUBE/10 at the University of South Carolina are also included.

We present the results from a working system designed to reconstruct a complete 3D surface description from the extremal boundary of an object. Earlier work has shown that complete surface information (second order differential surface properties) can be recovered at edges generated by the extremal boundary of a 3D surface. In this paper we present new results in applying this theoretical framework to many views of real objects in order to show that many frames can be integrated into a common coordinate system to form a complete 3D model of an object. Our experiments place these multiple frames in a common coordinate system using known motion, if available, or by otherwise employing an algorithm for automatically computing object motion based on our classification of edges in the reconstruction process. We present experimental results on both real and synthetic data. Our experimental results on real objects show that with a calibrated trinocular camera system we can accurately reconstruct a complete surface description of 3D objects.

Current segmentation and classification algorithms are not sufficiently robust to provide reliable real-time sensor-based vehicle guidance for Intelligent Vehicle Highway systems. An alternative technique based on neural networks was developed for scene classification as these algorithms can handle missing and fuzzy data. The back-propagation algorithm was successfully used in conjunction with new activation functions for classification of roads, lane markers, shadows, grass, and edge transitions in real-highway scenes. Extracted from 15 training images were 131 subregions of size 3 X 3 with known classes such as roads, lane markers, shadows, grass, and low and high-edge transitions. Two different neural network architectures based on image and edge data were defined. The neural network was then trained for learning the characteristics of desired classes. After convergence of the training phase was completed, the test images were correctly classified into the desired classes. The training time of 2.14 hours was significantly lower than that of days to a week, as reported by other researchers for similar applications. The processing speed and classification accuracy based on visual criteria were excellent for the test images.

This paper describes how fusion between thermal and range imaging allows us to discriminate different types of materials in outdoor scenes. First, we analyze how pure viSiOfl segmentation algorithms applied to thermal images allow discriminating materials such as rock and sand. Second, we show how combining thermal and range information allows us to better discriminate rocks from sand. Third, as an application, we examine how an autonomous legged robot can use these techniques to explore other planets.

The problem of determining the position and orientation of a mobile robot has been addressed by several researchers using sensors of different modalities, including video cameras. Invariably, all the vision-based approaches for robot localization consider that the camera is mounted on the robot and that the robot working environment is assumed to contain prominent landmarks at known locations. In this paper we propose a robot localization scheme where the robot itself serves as the landmark for cameras that are positioned in the environment to cover the entire work area of the robot. Although the proposed approach is applicable for the robots of any regular shape, we develop the solution to the localization problem by assuming a cylindrical shape for the robot. A compete mathematical analysis of the localization problem is given by extending the three-dimensional structure-from-rotational motion approach to the present task. We also examine the implementation issue of the proposed approach and present experimental results to show its effectiveness.

We discuss the applicability of multi-layer Neural Networks (NN) to automatic target classification in the challenging environment of Acquisition-Tracking-Pointing (ATP) systems. The merits of NN are discussed in the context of a limited training data base, which is characteristic of practical ATP situations. A computational method is reviewed which allows the quantification of large-scale NN performance for the important small-sample case. In addition, Perceptron learning for the classification of target stochastic images governed by the Poisson distribution is examined with the aid of computer simulations.

We have integrated several classes of intelligent software modules into our existing PACS. The first class can be categorized as general decision-making routines and include study routing, comparison image retrieval, study migration, storage management, and fault tolerance algorithms. These algorithms are rule based. The second class include user interface routines that allow radiologist to operate a PACS workstation within their own knowledge domain. Thus, window and level operations are translated into options to improve visualization of soft tissue or bone. The third class of intelligent modules are performance optimization algorithms and include optimizing file retrieval speed from a distributed PACS, optimizing T1-T2 contrast for various brain lesions in MR images, and automatic contrast and brightness adjustment of images displayed on PACS workstations. The effects of these intelligent algorithms on our PACS operation has been improved system reliability and study availability, and has made workstations easy to use. Currently, we are developing a general framework for the development of a knowledge-based multi-media distributed database management system for PACS which will support abstract and approximate query processing.

We describe the interfacing methods between our departments RIS (Radiological Information System) and PACS database. Sharing information has become an increasingly important issue for both systems. RIS study information should be available at the PACS workstation to complete the image description. Patient scheduling, admission and discharge information are critical to PACS for improving image routing and storage management algorithms. The design of the interface between the RIS and the PACS database involves the development of some standardization methods. These include the network communication protocol between the two database servers, the language mapping operations, the database result format and the error handling. The implementation of the interface is in two steps. In the first one, a subset of RIS data is automatically transmitted to the PACS database when some relevant events occur in the RIS. In a second phase, the user at the PACS workstation can directly initiate queries to the RIS. The PACS SQL server (UNIX based) sends SQL network requests as ASCII text to the RIS MUMPS database server (VAX based). The RIS server translates the SQL requests to MUMPS, executes the statements and returns ASCII results to the SQL server. We have been able to exchange information between the RIS and the PACS display programs. RIS text reports can be displayed on PACS workstations. RIS information can be used into pre-fetch algorithms.

The application of computer vision to mobile robots has generally been hampered by insufficient on-board computing power. The advent of VLSI-based general purpose concurrent multiprocessor systems promises to give mobile robots an increasing amount of on-board computing capability, and to allow computation intensive data analysis to be performed without high-bandwidth communication with a remote system.
