As massive open online courses (MOOCs) and online intelligent tutoring systems(ITS) have become increasingly widespread, the number of learners enrolled in online courses has shown explosive growth. However, these learners are likely to have acquired knowledge from diverse educational and vocational backgrounds. Therefore, it is unwise to apply the same criteria and assessment questions to assess all learners' abilities without differentiation. Therefore, the demand for the adaptive arrangement of questions for online learners is ever critical. Deep learning is a new increasingly popular approach for handling extraordinarily complex problems such as image recognition and natural language processing. In this research, we use neural networks to forecast learners' multi-question performance on new test questions and propose a new concept called predictable property for the first time to explain the reasons why neural networks can be applied to predict learners' multi-question performance based on their previous question responses. This approach means that fewer questions need to be answered by learners although more information can be gathered about them through the use of deep-learning-based techniques. Finally, we use both artificial datasets generated by cognitive models and three real-world datasets to validate the algorithm's performance. Experiments show a promising research result when using deep learning to predict learner performance in multi-question tasks and can ultimately provide more accurate adaptive tests for learners. © 2017 IEEE.

Locality-sensitive hashing for region-based large-scale image indexing

In this study, the authors present an efficient method for approximate large-scale image indexing and retrieval. The proposed method is mainly based on the visual content of the image regions. Indeed, regions are obtained by a fuzzy segmentation and they are described using high-frequency sub-band wavelets. Moreover, because of the difficulty in managing a huge amount of data, which is caused by the exponential growth of the processing time, approximate nearest neighbour algorithms are used to improve the retrieval speed. Therefore they adopted locality-sensitive hashing (LSH) for region-based indexing of images. In particular, since LSH performance depends fundamentally on the hash function partitioning the space, they exposed a new function, inspired from the E-8 lattice, that can efficiently be combined with the multi-probe LSH and the query-adaptive LSH . To justify the adopted theoretical choices and to highlight the efficiency of the proposed method, a set of experiments related to the region-based image retrieval are carried out on the challenging 'Wang' data set.

imagery from unmanned aerial systems (UAS) needs compression prior to transmission to a receiver for further processing. Once received, automated image exploitation algorithms, such as frame-to-frame registration, target tracking, and target identification, are performed to extract actionable information from the data. Unfortunately, in a compress-then-analyze system, exploitation algorithms must contend with artifacts introduced by lossy compression and transmission. Identifying metrics that enable compression engines to predict exploitation degradation could allow encoders the ability of tailoring compression for specific exploitation algorithms. This study investigates the impact of H.264 and JPEG2000 compression on target tracking through the use of a multi-hypothesis blob tracker. Used quality metrics include PSNR, viF, and IW-SSIM.

The Rational Covariance Extension Problem is a problemin applied mathematics where one tries to find a rational spectral density thatmatches a finite covariance sequence. Applications of this can be used in areaslike speech- and image-processing. This problem has been studied intensivelyover the last decades and recently a related problem, the Circulant RationalCovariance Extension Problem, was solved. This version of the problem dealswith periodic stochastic sequences, and was shown to be a natural way toapproximate the solution to the original problem. Here we look at the specialcase when the process in question is skew-periodic, and show that also in thiscase a unique solution to the problem exists. In automation and handling engineering, supplying work pieces between different stages along the production process chain is of special interest. Often the parts are stored unordered in bins or lattice boxes and hence have to be separated and ordered for feeding purposes. An alternative to complex and spacious mechanical systems such as bowl feeders or conveyor belts, which are typically adapted to the parts' geometry, is using a robot to grip the work pieces out of a bin or from a belt. Such applications are in need of reliable and precise computer-aided object detection and localization systems. For a restricted range of parts, there exists a variety of 2D image processing algorithms that solve the recognition problem. However, these methods are often not well suited for the localization of randomly stored parts. In this paper we present a fast and flexible 3D object recognizer that localizes objects by identifying primitive features within the objects. Since technical work pieces typically consist to a substantial degree of geometric primitives such as planes, cylinders and cones, such features usually carry enough information in order to determine the position of the entire object. Our algorithms use 3D best-fitting combined with an intelligent data pre-processing step. The capability and performance of this approach is shown by applying the algorithms to real data sets of different industrial test parts in a prototypical bin picking demonstration system.

A growing interest in terahertz technology finds support in a large number of applications. One of the most interesting applications of terahertz waves is imaging. The terahertz range of electromagnetic radiation has large potential in the field of hidden objects detection because it is not harmful to humans [1, 2]. However, the main difficulty in the THz imaging systems is low image quality due to low sensitivity and a small number of pixels in detecting modules of cameras Considering the fact that even THz images with low pixel resolution still provide valuable information, it is justified to combine them with the high-resolution images from a visible camera. image fusion can be used in a wide range of security applications for example detection and identification of hidden objects. Our goal is to build a system harmless to humans for screening and detection of hidden objects using a THz camera. A very important aspect of applying various processing techniques to images is proper assessment of image quality. We propose a combination of two image quality assessment methods (IQA) as a methodology of assessing quality of the fused images and a method to compare image fusion algorithms.

Although high speed camera technologies boost the image acquisition speed by orders, the image processing speed stagnates. The emerging discipline of neuromorphic engineering aiming to integrate the behaviours of living neural systems into large scale computer hardware or software breaks the bottleneck. The dynamic vision sensor (DVS) is a neuromorphic silicon retina prototype that records only scene contrast changes in the form of stream of events, thus naturally excluding the redundant background absolute gray levels. In this context, numerous high speed asynchronous event based vision algorithms have been developed and their advantages over frame based processing methods have been compared. Real-world robotic applications are real-time and usually require fast sensory feedback. In haptic feedback teleoperated micromanipulation, vision is a sound candidate for force estimation if the position-force model is well established. The sampling frequency, however, needs to attain 1 kHz to allow a transparent and reliable tactile sensation and to ensure system stability, which is beyond the speed of the conventional frame based processing. The event based vision has thus been applied to provide the needed force feedback for two micromanipulation applications: Haptic feedback teleoperation of optical tweezers; Haptic virtual assistance in microgripper based micromanipulation. The results show that the haptic frequency requirement of 1 kHz has successfully been achieved. For the first application, high speed particle position detection al- gorithms have been developed and validated. A three-dimensional haptic feedback system capable of manipulating multiple-trap optical tweezers has been realized. Extensive experiments have been conducted, of which a high quality shape sensa- tion of a complex three-dimensional micro-object has been performed thanks to the high speed haptic feedback. Electromagnetic systems for imaging concealed objects at checkpoints typically employ radiation at millimetre and terahertz frequencies. These systems have been shown to be effective and provide a sufficiently high resolution image. However there are difficulties and current electromagnetic systems have limitations particularly in accurately differentiating between threat and innocuous objects based on shape, surface emissivity or reflectivity, which are indicative parameters. In addition, water has a high absorption coefficient at millimetre wavelength and terahertz frequencies, which makes it more difficult for these frequencies to image through thick damp clothing. This paper considers the potential of using ultra wideband (UWB) in the low gigahertz range. The application of this frequency band to security screening appears to be a relatively new field. The business case for implementing the UWB system has been made financially viable by the recent availability of low-cost integrated circuits operating at these frequencies. Although designed for the communication sector, these devices can perform the required UWB radar measurements as well. This paper reports the implementation of a 2 to 5 GHz bandwidth linear array scanner. The paper describes the design and fabrication of transmitter and receiver antenna arrays whose individual elements are a type of antipodal vivaldi antenna. The antenna's frequency and angular response were simulated in CST Microwave Studio and compared with laboratory measurements. The data pre-processing methods of background subtraction and deconvolution are implemented to improve the image quality. The background subtraction method uses a reference dataset to remove antenna crosstalk and room reflections from the dataset. The deconvolution method uses a Wiener filter to "sharpen" the returned echoes which improves the resolution of the reconstructed image. Nowadays mobile phones are the most widely used portable devices which evolve very fast adding new features and improving user experiences. The latest generation of hand-held devices called smartphones is equipped with superior memory, cameras and rich multimedia features, empowering people to use their mobile phones not only as a communication tool but also for entertainment purposes. With many young students showing interest in learning mobile application development one should introduce novel learning methods which may adapt to fast technology changes and introduce students to application development. Mobile phones become a common device, and engineering community incorporates phones in various solutions. Overcoming the limitations of conventional undergraduate electrical engineering (EE) education this paper explores the concept of template-based based education in mobile phone programming. The concept is based on developing small exercise templates which students can manipulate and revise for quick hands-on introduction to the application development and integration. Android platform is used as a popular open source environment for application development. The exercises relate to image processing topics typically studied by many students. The goal is to enable conventional course enhancements by incorporating in them short hands-on learning modules.
