It has long been a dream to realize machines with flexible visual perception capability. Research on digital image processing by computers was initiated about 30 years ago, and since then a wide variety of image processing algorithms have been devised. Using such image processing algorithms and advanced hardware technologies, many practical ma chines with visual recognition capability have been implemented and are used in various fields: optical character readers and design chart readers in offices, position-sensing and inspection systems in factories, computer tomography and medical X-ray and microscope examination systems in hospitals, and so on. Although these machines are useful for specific tasks, their capabilities are limited. That is, they can analyze only simple images which are recorded under very carefully adjusted photographic conditions: objects to be recognized are isolated against a uniform background and under well-controlled artificial lighting. In the late 1970s, many image understanding systems were de veloped to study the automatic interpretation of complex natural scenes. They introduced artificial intelligence techniques to represent the knowl edge about scenes and to realize flexible control structures. The first author developed an automatic aerial photograph interpretation system based on the blackboard model (Naga1980). Although these systems could analyze fairly complex scenes, their capabilities were still limited; the types of recognizable objects were limited and various recognition vii viii Preface errors occurred due to noise and the imperfection of segmentation algorithms.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is uniquely suited to help solve the search and rescue problem since it can be utilized either day or night and through both dense fog or thick cloud cover. This paper describes the search and rescue data processing system (SARDPS) developed at Goddard Space Flight Center. SARDPS was developed for the Search and Rescue Mission Office in order to conduct research, development, and technology demonstration of SAR to quickly locate small aircraft which have crashed in remote areas. In order to effectively apply SAR to the detection of crashed aircraft several technical challenges needed to be overcome. These include full resolution SAR image formation using low frequency radar appropriate for foliage penetration, the application of autofocusing for SAR motion compensation in the processing system, and the development of sophisticated candidate crash site detection algorithms. In addition, the need to dispatch rescue teams to specific locations requires precise SAR image georectification and map registration techniques. The final end-to-end processing system allows for raw SAR phase history data to be quickly converted to georeferenced map/image products with candidate crash site locations identified. ©2004 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

With the increasing popularity of digital camera, organizing and managing the large collection of digital photos effectively are therefore required. In this paper, we study the photo album sorting, clustering and compression techniques in DCT frequency domain without having to decompress JPEG photos into spatial domain firstly. We utilize the first several non-zero DCT coefficients to build our feature set and calculate the energy histograms in frequency domain directly. We then calculate the similarity distance of every two photos, and perform photo album sorting and adaptive clustering algorithms to group the most similar photos together. We further compress those clustered photos by a MPEG-like algorithm with variable IBP frames and adaptive search windows. Our methods provide a compact and reasonable format for people to store and transmit their large number of digital photos. Experiments prove that our algorithm is efficient and effective for digital photo processing.

It is expected that the next generation of full 3D optical scanning systems will be able to measure volumetric objects in motion. Standard data representations like point clouds or sets of triangle meshes, which are used nowadays for static 3D objects, will no longer be an efficient solution in this field. systems of this kind will have to use other data processing and representation methods. We propose our own solution in this paper, using an arbitrary full 3D mesh which is scaled and wrapped around a merged point cloud obtained from the measurements, instead of a standard point cloud representation. This solution was specifically prepared for a prototype of a fall-field 4D scanning system. This system is based on a dynamic laser triangulation. Four scanners capture a surface of a moving object from four different directions simultaneously. They are calibrated in time and space so finally we can obtain a full 3D object surface which changes in time. In this paper we present some details of the scanning system, 4D surface representation, general 4D data processing pipeline, developed algorithms and we finally show some exemplary results of our work in this field.

A preliminary comparison between loss and lossless compression approaches for the remote sensing data processing was made. A three-stage lossless compression algorithm of multispectral remote sensing images based on wavelet transformations and intra-bands correlation is proposed and developed. It allows one to consider peculiarities of remote sensing data and to increase the compression ratio of the algorithm. The paper describes a modification of the compression algorithm aimed at considerable improvement of computational performance and based on bands trimmed enumeration and data selective use. A research of the three-stage algorithm performance was carried out in comparison with the universal compression algorithms such as WinRar, WinZip and JPEG2000 using data from various remote sensing systems showing to some extent a superiority in the compression ratio, as well as some insignificant lag of the computational performance was identified.

State of the art dimension reduction and classification schemes in multi- and hyper-spectral imaging rely primarily on the information contained in the spectral component. To better capture the joint spatial and spectral data distribution we combine the Wavelet Packet Transform with the linear dimension reduction method of Principal Component Analysis. Each spectral band is decomposed by means of the Wavelet Packet Transform and we consider a joint entropy across all the spectral bands as a tool to exploit the spatial information. Dimension reduction is then applied to the Wavelet Packets coefficients. We present examples of this technique for hyper-spectral satellite imaging. We also investigate the role of various shrinkage techniques to model non-linearity in our approach.

Hardware for performing matrix operations at high speeds is in great demand in signal and image processing and in many real-time and scientific applications. A low-cost checksum scheme had been proposed to obtain fault-tolerant matrix operations on multiple processor systems. In order to solve problems with the checksum scheme, a very general matrix encoding scheme is proposed in this paper to achieve fault-tolerant matrix operations with multiple processor systems. Since many signal and image processing algorithms involving a multiply-and-accumulate type of expression can be transformed into matrix-vector multiplication operations and executed in a linear array, this scheme is extremely useful for cost-effective and fault-tolerant signal and image processing.

The Poisson and Normal probability distributions poorly match the dark current histogram of a typical image sensor. The histogram has only positive values, and is positively skewed (with a long tail). The Normal distribution is symmetric (and possesses negative values), while the Poisson distribution is discrete. image sensor characterization and simulation would benefit from a different distribution function, which matches the experimental observations better. Dark current fixed pattern noise is caused by discrete randomly-distributed charge generation centers. If these centers shared a common charge-generation rate, and were distributed uniformly, the Poisson distribution would result. The fact that it does not indicates that the generation rates vary, a spatially non-uniform amplification is applied to the centers, or that the spatial distribution of centers is non-uniform. Monte Carlo simulations have been used to examine these hypotheses. The Log-Normal, Gamma and Inverse Gamma distributions have been evaluated as empirical models for characterization and simulation. These models can accurately match the histograms of specific image sensors. They can also be used to synthesize the dark current images required in the development of image processing algorithms. Simulation methods can be used to create synthetic images with more complicated distributions. © 2006 SPIE-IS&T.

A system architecture is presented for document imaging in an open, distributed environment over networks, where various kinds of imaging devices can be interconnected remotely. The key components are two sets of image processing operations to transform input images to (1) canonical image representations to absorb different visual appearance due to characteristics of imaging devices or image acquisition conditions (normalization), and (2) optimal image representations according to tasks and preferences of individual users (optimization). images captured through a diversity of input devices can be delivered to remote sites through networks, and then will be used for a variety of tasks such as printing on paper sheets, browsing on displays, and editing. These diversities can be resolved systematically by placing the normalizations at an upper end (routing servers) and the optimizations at a lower end (clients) of the data flow over networks. In view of this architecture, we describe some instances of the normalizations and optimizations associated with a particular task of highly legible printing of scanned document images. Three essential algorithms are mentioned for optimizing document images: adaptive tone mapping with background cleaning, text super-resolution, and text color clustering. The optimization process is mentioned for highly legible printing, along with some other potential applications and tasks.

We have developed an eye-position tracking stereoscopic projector which employs image shifting optics. The display allows 3D images to be viewed without special glasses from any position along a lateral axis. Its image shifting device contains a plane parallel glass plate and is installed in a liquid crystal projector. Refraction produced by inclination of the glass plate shifts the optical axis of the projected image. Since the only moving part in the optics is the lightweight glass plate, the response of the image shifting device is both fast and precise enough for interactive 3D-CAD and virtual reality applications. To improve the system's interactive response, we have widened the stereoscopic viewing area by adding a device which causes the image to vibrate laterally. Also we use a new tracking algorithm which reduces the tracking error that would ordinarily be created by delay time. Experimental results confirm the success of these improvements.
