A high performance, high sensitivity, CCD line scan camera for use in machine vision systems is presented. The camera incorporates an on-board micro-controller as well as PLD's (programmable logic devices) that allow computer control of image acquisition, image processing, and image analysis. The micro-controller/PLD combination provide embedded image processing/analysis capability whereby data compression can be achieved thus reducing the system hardware requirements. Users have control over algorithm parameters thus allowing for dynamic changes in the inspection target. algorithms and micro-controller firmware are completely in-system programmable via a serial communications link. Static and adaptive gray scale thresholding algorithms are presented as well as a sample application where a maximum of twenty cameras can be networked together to a single host computer. Applications for the camera include web inspection, parts inspection, template matching and gauging.

Continuous wavelet transforms (CWT) and frames have always been useful for noise suppression, edge detection and medical signal processing. However these transforms are generally shied away from since computational complexity prevents their widespread use. However, recently developed processor technology that uses analog rather than digital signal processing hardware may be the ideal means to implement and apply these algorithms. It is then appropriate to consider new types of frames and continuous wavelet systems. We propose two families of tunable continuous wavelet systems with widely varying frame bounds and scaling behavior, and illustrate examples of computations involving these systems.

Video systems have seen a resurgence in military applications since the recent proliferation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Video systems offer light weight, low cost, and proven COTS technology. Video has not proven to be a panacea, however, as generally available storage and transmission systems are limited in bandwidth. Digital video systems collect data at rates of up to 270 Mbs;typical transmission bandwidths range from 9600 baud to 10 Mbs. Either extended transmission times or data compression are needed to handle video bit streams. Video compression algorithms have been developed and evaluated in the commercial broadcast and entertainment industry. The Motion Pictures Expert Group (MPEG) developed MPEG-I to compress videos to CD ROM bandwidths (1.5 Mbs) and MPEG-2 to cover the range of 5-10 Mbs and higher. Commercial technology has not extended to lower bandwidths, nor has the impact of MPEG compression for military applications been demonstrated. Using digitized video collected by UAV systems, the effects of data compression on image interpretability and task satisfaction were investigated. Using both MPEG-2 and frame decimation, video clips were compressed to rates of 6Mbs, 1.5 Mbs, and 0.256 Mbs. Experienced image analysts provided task satisfaction estimates and National image Interpretability Rating Scale (NIIRS) ratings on the compressed and uncompressed video clips. Results were analyzed to define the effects of compression rate and method on interpretability and task satisfaction. Lossless compression was estimated to occur at similar to 10 Mbs and frame decimation was superior to MPEG-2 at low bit rates.

The Crosshead Inspection System, CIS, utilizes machine vision technology for on-line inspection of a diesel engine component - a crosshead. The system includes three functional modules. I) Part handling subsystem - presents parts for inspection and accepts or rejects them based on signals from the image analysis software. 2) image acquisition hardware Optics, light sources and two video cameras collect images of inspected parts. 3) image analysis software - analyzes the images and sends pass/fail decision signals to the handling subsystem. The CIS acquires and inspects two images of each part. The upper camera generates an image of the part's top surface, while the lower camera generates an image of the so-called "pockets" of the lower half. Both images are acquired when a part-in-place signal is received from the handling system. The surface inspection camera and light source are positioned at opposed low angles relative to the surface. Irregularities manifest themselves as shadows on the surface image. These shadows are detected, measured and compared to user specifications. The pocket inspection detects the presence of tumbler stones. The contrast of these stones is enhanced with circularly polarized lighting and imaging. The graphical user interface of the CIS provides easy setup and debugging of the image processing algorithms. A database module collects, archives and presents part inspection statistics to the user. The inspection rate is sixty parts per minute.

We discuss a new geometric hashing method for searching large databases of 2D images (or 3D objects) to match a query built from geometric information presented by a single 3D object (or single 2D image). The goal is to rapidly determine a small subset of the images that potentially contain a view of the given object (or a small set of objects that potentially match the item in the image). Since this must be accomplished independent of the pose of the object, the objects and images, which are characterized by configurations of geometric features such as points, lines and/or conics, must-be treated using a viewpoint invariant formulation. We are therefore forced to characterize these configurations in terms of their 3D and 2D geometric invariants. The crucial relationship between the 3D geometry and its "residual" in 2D is expressible as a correspondence (in the sense of algebraic geometry). Computing a set of generating equations for the ideal of this correspondence gives a complete characterization of the view independent relationships between an object and all of its possible images. Once a set of generators is in hand, it can be used to devise efficient recognition algorithms and to give an efficient geometric hashing scheme. This requires exploiting the form and symmetry of the equations. The result is a multidimensional access scheme whose efficiency we examine. Several potential directions for improving this scheme are also discussed. Finally, in a brief appendix, we discuss an alternative approach to invariants for generalized perspective that replaces the standard invariants by a subvariety of a Grassmannian. The advantage of this is that one can circumvent many annoying general position assumptions and arrive at invariant equations (in the Plucker coordinates) that are more numerically robust in applications.

For the numerical solution of large linear systems, the preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithm can be very effective if one has a good preconditioner. Two distinctly different approaches to preconditioning are discussed for solving systems derived from continuous linear operators of the form (K) over tilde + alpha L, where (K) over tilde is a convolution operator, L is a regularization operator, and alpha is a smalt positive parameter. The first approach is circulant preconditioning. The second, less standard, approach is based on a two-level decomposition of the solution space. A comparison of the two approaches is given for a model problem arising in atmospheric image deblurring.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is uniquely suited to help solve the Search and Rescue problem since it can be utilized either day or night and through both dense fog or thick cloud cover. Other gapers in this session, and in this session in 1997, describe the various SAR image processing algorithms that are being developed and evaluated within the Search and Rescue Program. All of these approaches to using SAR data require substantial amounts of digital signal processing: for the SAR image formation, and possibly for the subsequent image processing. In recognition of the demanding processing that will required for an operational Search and Rescue Data processing System (SARDPS), NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center and NASA/Stennis Space Center are conducting a technology demonstration utilizing SHARC multi-chip modules from Boeing to perform SAR image formation processing.

In certain applications, the discretization of two-dimensional integral equations can lead to systems involving matrices with block Toeplitz-Toeplitz block structure. Iterative Krylov subspace methods are sometimes employed to find regularized solutions to the related 2D discrete ill-posed problems;however, preconditioners which filter noise are needed to speed convergence to regularized solutions. We describe a preconditioning technique based on the Toeplitz-type structure of the matrix which generalizes the approaches in [1] and [2] to take advantage of symmetry and real arithmetic operations. We use fast sine transforms to transform the original system to a system whose matrix has partially reconstructible Cauchy-like blocks. The preconditioner is a block diagonal, rank m approximation to this matrix, with Cauchy-like blocks each augmented by an identity of appropriate dimension. We note that the initialization cost is in general less than that for the similar 2D preconditioner in [2] which does not take advantage of symmetry. Several examples are given which illustrate the success of our preconditioned methods.

We propose two new approaches which consider the specific sonar image segmentation problem in a statistical regularization framework, based on hierarchical Markov Random Field (MRF) modeling. Within this framework, data-driven parameters estimation is performed using a mixture distributions and the contextual parameters are estimated by using the ''qualitative box'' method. Then we developp two unsupervised segmentations algorithms. The first one, based on a multigrid approach, requires pyramidal structure of the label field, associated to a single observation level: the MRF energy function is re-written at each scale as a coarser MRF model (derived from the one defined at full resolution). The second algorithm we proposed is based on a multiresolution approach: an observation pyramid is obtained by image projection on biorthogonal wavelets. The Signal to Noise Ratio is thus increased and allows to give a good initialization for the regularization algorithm at each level. We also compare the robustness of these unsupervised multigrid and multiresolution approaches. Some convincing results are presented and validate these new approaches for synthetic and real sonar picture segmentation.

Correlation filters designed for automatic target recognition can be used for assisting trackers. We show that a tracker may use the filters for independent verification of the target as necessary. In particular, a form of the filters known as unconstrained correlation filters is shown to be optimal from a detection standpoint. An example is given to illustrate the concept of target reacquisition when the tracker's lock is broken.
