The modern achievements in optical measurement techniques applied in experimental mechanics, the increasing resolving power of data recording systems, combined with digital image processing techniques yield more and better informations on the mechanical reactions of structures and structural elements than at any time before, together with an ever increasing amount of data, provided for further evaluation. No matter which optical method will be used generally the observed and recorded optical phenomena are not identical with the finally wanted informations, mainly informations on the stress-state. Hence it is necessary to calculate the final results, introducing the measured and digital data, obtained from image processing, as input data into proper and advanced mathematical procedures. According to the discrete nature of these data the mathematical algorithms are transformed into discrete numerical procedures, like finite element method and boundary element method. Such a combination of experimental and numerical analysis, named hybrid method, warrants a higher reliability and accuracy of results, which are closer to reality also because experiments represent the reality more easily than theory only. The application of hybrid methods presuppose the availability of complex measuring-, on-line-processing--and sufficient computer capacity. The principle of hybrid methods will be explained and demonstrated by some examples of application.

For vision-based detection of lane boundaries, current computer vision algorithms for lane detection do not work well in regions of deep shadow. A pre-processing algorithm for detection and correction of shadow and low-sun angle artifacts was developed and successfully used to estimate lane boundaries on more than 6000 real highway images.

One of the Department of Energy's (DOE) ongoing tasks is the storage and inspection of a large number of waste barrels containing a variety of hazardous substances. Martin Marietta is currently contracted to develop a robotic system -- the Intelligent Mobile Sensor System (IMSS) -- for the automatic monitoring and inspection of these barrels. The IMSS is a mobile robot with multiple sensors: video cameras, illuminators, laser ranging and barcode reader. We assisted Martin Marietta in this task, specifically in the development of image processing algorithms that recognize and classify the barrel labels. Our subsystem uses video images to detect and locate the barcode, so that the barcode reader can be pointed at the barcode.

This paper describes the Bayesian image reconstruction algorithm with entropy prior with space variant hyperparameter. The spatial variation of the hyperparameter allows different degrees of resolution in areas of high and low signal/noise ratio, thus avoiding the large residuals present in algorithms that use a constant balancing parameter. The space variant hyperparameter determines the relative weight between the prior information and the likelihood defining the degree of smoothness of the solution. To compute the variable hyperparameter we used a segmentation technique based on artificial neural networks of the Self- Organizing Map type. Using this technique we segmented the image in 25 regions and computed a different value of the hyperparameter for each one. We applied the method to the Hubble Space Telescope Cameras and to ground based CCD data.

Model-based scene interpretation systems can use non-monotonic resoning to resolve many of the inherent ambiguites and uncertainties present in real world image data. Model-based systems perform object recognition by efficiently matching features extracted from image data to corresponding features in known object models. This matching process is based on the accuracy of the extracted features. It is typically the case, however, that these features are themselves uncertain. This uncertainty is present because the image processing algorithms used for feature extraction do not consider global context, are noise sensitive, and use scene dependent parameters. Non-monotonic reasoning can resolve these uncertainties by identifying global inconsistencies and providing the means to recover from them. It does this by retracting invalid deductions based on the underlying caused of inconsistencies as they arise during the model matching process. A non-monotonic system can also predict the existence of additional features to complete a partial match.

Recognition of images moving with respect to a constant background (possibly contaminated by noise) may be considerably improved if a Neuronlike Network (NN) with specific dynamic properties is applied for preliminary data processing. Optimal design of a dynamic network containing thousands of interconnected, nonlinear elements requires developement of special tools and algorithms. In our system, the optimization of the NN parameters for preliminary processing of moving images is performed using a model of the dynamic processes in the retina called ARTINA. A compromise between satisfactory contrasting and noise elimination defines a 'quasi-optimal' structure of local connections in the NN. In this paper we present an experimental procedure (using ARTINA) for partical optimization of a NN performing contrasting and local features detection for images moving with velocities within a given range of values. A performance index for contrasting and edge enhancement is first selected. It is then shown that through appropriate selection of dynamic properties of the NN elements, it is possible to achieve a considerable (up to 10 times) improvement of the performance index. Proper selection of time constants, delays, and connection ranges results in a 'cumulation' process. This process enhances contours of moving objects and improves detection of local features. A special optimization algorithm, using a selected performance index, permits the optimization both of the neuron time constants and of the structure of local connections defining the central and peripheral receptive fields. Relations between object speed, time constants describing the dynamic of the neuron, and dimensions of receptive fields are investigated. Results of the optimization and a discussion of possible methods for improving the preliminary dynamic image processing is presented.

A cross-correlation algorithm for determining image correspondence is described. As is typical for such algorithms, correct determination of correspondence at a fairly high level of accuracy is relatively easy to achieve. The problem addressed in the algorithm is the development of consistency checking mechanisms that enable the detection and correction of the remaining relatively small number of incorrect match and non-match determinations. The image matching algorithm and its proposed consistency checking mechanism differ from more traditional relaxation-based methods in two ways: 1. the algorithm takes a more 'committed' approach in terms of actively making discrete inferences about match and non-match hypotheses based on relatively local support, even at the earliest stages of the algorithm, and 2. the consistency checking mechanisms permit the detection and isolation of sets of match and non-match hypotheses that are inconsistent with neighboring hypotheses. Within the context of graph matching - with nodes being detected image features and edges the spatial relationship between features - the algorithm 'commits' itself by crating 'virtual' nodes, which function as hypotheses about where missing features should appear. The criterion for consistency embodies the notion that the result of the comparison process should consist of match information which represents the construction of the union out of the initial two graphs being compared - in contrast to the continuity criterion embodied in relaxation methods. The comparison algorithm should be of interest in areas of application where image differences are reconcilable, e.g., when missing features on one image may not have been detected correctly initially, but might be found via more focused processing. Model-based matching may be a candidate application. As the computer graphics world has become 'rasterized', it has become increasingly similar in fundamental algorithms and concepts to image processing. This closure is evident in the definition of underlying data structures and hardware design. Unfortunately, the two fields remain rather disjoint in communication. This paper deals with the interface between image processing and graphics systems. SDC has incorporated key aspects of a graphics architecture as a natural extension to its image processing package. A system architecture is described with examples of how graphics capabilities enhance image processing system functionality for specific applications.

IWPTS'95 (International Workshop on Protocol Test systems) is being held this year at !NT (Institut National des Telecommunications), Evry, France, from 4 to 6 September, 1995. IWPTS'95 is the eighth of a series of annual meetings sponsored by the IFIP Working Group WG6.1 dedicated to "Architecture and Protocols for Computer Networks". The seven previous workshops were held in Vancouver (Canada, 1988), Berlin (Germany, 1989), Mclean (USA, 1990), Leidschendam (The Netherlands, 1991), Montreal (Canada, 1992), Pau (France, 1993) and Tokyo (Japan, 1994). The workshop is a meeting place where both research and industry, theory and practice come together. By bringing both researchers and practitioners together, IWPTS opens up the communication between these groups. This helps keep the research vital and improves the state of the practitioner's art. Forty-eight papers have been submitted to IWPTS'95 and all of them have been reviewed by the members of the Program Committee and additional reviewers. The completed reviewers list is included in this Proceedings. Based on these reviews, the Program Committee selected 26 for oral presentation and 4 to be presented as posters. Two specially invited papers complete the Workshop Program, which is composed of ten sessions: Testing Methods (Session 1), Test Environments (Session 2), Theoretical Framework (Session 3), algorithms and Languages (Session 4), Test Generation 1 (Session 5), Testability (Session 6), Test Generation 2 (Session 7), Industrial Applications (Session 8), Distributed Testing and performance (Session 9) and Test Management (Session 10).
