An acousto-optic tunable filter imaging spectrometer is introduced. The design criterion meeting system issues such as image quality, spectral response, field of view (FOV), programmability, and system compactness are discussed. Experimental demonstration obtained from using a 1/2 ' × 1/2 ' × 2' AOTF imaging spectrometer breadboard is presented. Identification of Nd+3 contained in a Bastnasite rock using the spectrogram recorded by this imaging spectrometer is also provided.

The University Hospital Utrecht (UHU) has been the site for clinical evaluation of a prototype Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), as a part of the Dutch PACS project run by BAZIS, Philips Medical systems and the UHU in the period 1986-1989. An extensive research program on '3D Computer Vision' has been launched. In the near future the 3D Computer Vision network will be connected with the miniPACS operational at the department of Nuclear Medicine, based on a Macintosh ii network configuration connected to a number of gamma-cameras. In a further project we will assess the technology of cranial 3D imaging in a number of clinical applications by offering routinely 3D reconstructions based on high-resolution and thin-section CT data. The paper gives an account of these projects and how the interconnection by PACS in a later stage may give perspectives for the Medical imaging Department as an advanced Medical Information Department for the whole hospital and beyond.

A system has been implemented for the acquisition, processing and display of one- and two-dimensional signals. The hardware is based on an advanced signal processor with integrated floating point circuitry which has been interfaced to IBM PC/xT, AT and Microchannel as well as VME and Multibus ii buses. The application software has been written in Turbo Pascal under MS-DOS and is also operational on VME and Multibus iisystems. The man/machine interface is menu driven and fast graphics is supported by the signal processor. The system is presently applied for x-ray small angle scattering, tunneling- and atomic force microscopy where the users require fast interactive imageprocessing with high accuracy.
