The extraction and classification of significant points along a contour is fundamental to many imageprocessing tasks. In this paper, we present a simple process for extracting such points with several appealing properties: the operation is developed in terms of contours which are represented discretely;it is completely local and hence suitable for real time operation vector or parallel processors;and it is tunable to extract significant points at different resolutions of orientation change along a contour. We also describe its use in linear feature extraction and processing restricted cases of environmental motion where the interest operator associates parameterized attributes with extracted image points. Matching features using these attributes allows for significant computational reductions over schemes based upon correlation matching without any loss of robustness, especially for such cases of restricted motion.

The development of a CCD-based parallel analog processor is described. The single-instruction, multiple-data (SIMD) architecture allows substantial throughput improvements when compared to conventional serial imageprocessing hardware. The heart of the concept is a single-chip array of analog processing elements interconnected with a two-dimensional CCD shift register network. The same analog operation is performed on all cells simultaneously. The device shows great promise in medium resolution (100 multiplied by 100) applications (such as guided weapons and robotics) where it can be directly interfaced with a staring focal plane through bump interconnections.

The Dirichlet tessellation (DT) and the Voronoi diagram (VD) on a digitized picture plane, and their applications to imageprocessing are presented. The modified digital Dirichlet tessellation (MDDT) and the modified digital Voronoi diagram (MDVD) are introduced anew as the counterparts of the DT and the VD defined for a finite set of connected components in a digitized binary picture. Two algorithms (a sequential type and a parallel type) are given to obtain the MDDT and MDVD. Characteristics of the MDDT, the MDVD, and the algorithms to determine them are discussed. Experimental results are shown for applications of the MDDT and the MDVD to imageprocessing, which include texture analysis of microscopic images of pathological samples and region division of chest x-ray images.
