Suggestions from the field of image processing to compensate for turbulence effects and restore degraded images include motion-compensated image integration after which the image can be considered as a non-distorted image that has been blurred with a point spread function (PSF) the same size as the pixel motions due to the turbulence. Since this PSF is unknown, a blind deconvolution is still necessary to restore the image. By utilising different blind deconvolution algorithms along with the motion-compensated image integration, several variants of this turbulence compensation method are created. In this paper we discuss the differences of the various blind deconvolution algorithms employed and give a qualitative analysis of the turbulence compensation variants by comparing their respective restoration results. This is done by visual inspection as well as by means of different image quality metrics that analyse the high frequency components. © 2008 SPIE.

We have developed a novel approach to performing automatic detection of concealed threat objects in passive MMW imagery of people scanned in a portal setting. It is applicable to the significant class of imaging scanners that use the protocol of having the subject rotate in front of the camera in order to image them from several closely spaced directions. Customary methods of dealing with MMW sequences rely on the analysis of the spatial images in a frame-by-frame manner, with information extracted from separate frames combined by some subsequent technique of data association and tracking over time. We contend that the pooling of information over time in traditional methods is not as direct as can be and potentially less efficient in distinguishing threats from clutter. We have formulated a more direct approach to extracting information about the scene as it evolves over time. We propose an atypical spatio-temporal arrangement of the MMW image data - to which we give the descriptive name Row Evolution image (REI) sequence. This representation exploits the singular aspect of having the subject rotate in front of the camera. We point out which features in REIs are most relevant to detecting threats, and describe the algorithms we have developed to extract them. We demonstrate results of successful automatic detection of threats, including ones whose faint image contrast renders their disambiguation from clutter very challenging. We highlight the ease afforded by the REI approach in permitting specialization of the detection algorithms to different parts of the subject body. Finally, we describe the execution efficiency advantages of our approach, given its natural fit to parallel processing.

The exact knowledge of the blood vessel geometry plays an important role, not only in clinical applications (stroke diagnosis, detection of stenosis), but also for detailed analysis of functional data, such as fMRI or optical imaging data. Here we focus on validating not only the geometry of the extracted vascular pattern, but also its function, namely the fluid dynamics. For validating angiographic data, phase contrast angiography (PC-MRA) sequences are used, as these data contain additionally to the morphological data rheological information. This rhe-ological information can be used to validate the reconstructed geometric model of the vascular system, especially for the detection of missing vessels due to velocity changes in front of bifurcations.

The construction of very good hyperspectral sensors operating in the thermal infrared bands from 8 to 12 microns arouses much interest for the development of data exploitation tools. Temperature emissivity separation (TES) algorithms are very important components of a future toolbox, because they make it possible to extract these two fundamental targets' parameters. The emissivity relies on the nature of the target's surface materials, while the temperature gives information related to their use and relationship with the environment. The TES technique presented in this paper is based on iteration on temperature principle, where a total square error criterion is used to estimate the temperature. The complete procedure is described in the paper. Its sensitivity to noise is studied and a mathematical behavior model is provided. The model is validated through a Monte-Carlo simulation of the technique's operation. © 2008 World Scientific Publishing Company.

This paper proposes a novel scene change detection algorithm based on the 3D wavelet transform. In scene change including cut, dissolve and fade, the frames have particular temporal and spatial layouts. The dissolve and the fade have strong temporal and spatial correlation; on the contract the correlation of the cut is weak. The 3D wavelet transform can effectively express the correlation of the several successive frames since the low-frequency and high-frequency component coefficients have the proper statistics regularities which can effectively identify the shot transitions. Three features are computed to describe the correlation of the shot transitions, which are input to support vector machines for scene change detection. Experimental results show that the method is effective for the gradual shot transition detection.

A blind separation algorithm for restoring the original images from the blurred grayscale images is proposed, which utilizes the constrain ability of the nonholonomic natural gradient (NNG) in the independent component analysis(ICA) methods. However, the nonlinear activation function of this algorithm relates to the unavailable probability distribution of the sources closely, though it is robust to nonstationary and strongly undulate sources. To this problem, our method adaptively select the nonlinear function by use of the kurtosis of the output signals, and propose an adaptive NNG (ANNG) blind separation algorithm of blurred image based on ICA, and research the effect of the different mixture matrices to the performance of this algorithm. The simulations show the validity of the proposed method. Compared with the nonholonomic natural gradient algorithm and the classical FastICA algorithm, the performance index of this paper algorithm is also better.

The Advanced Linked Extended Reconnaissance & Targeting (ALERT) Technology Demonstration (TD) project is addressing key operational needs of the future Canadian Army's Surveillance and Reconnaissance forces by fusing multi-sensor and tactical data, developing automated processes, and integrating beyond line-of-sight sensing. We discuss concepts for displaying and fusing multi-sensor and tactical data within an Enhanced Operator Control Station (EOCS). The sensor data can originate from the Coyote's own visible-band and IR cameras, laser rangefmder, and ground-surveillance radar, as well as beyond line-of-sight systems such as a mini-UAV and unattended ground sensors. The authors address technical issues associated with the use of fully digital IR and day video cameras and discuss videorate image processing developed to assist the operator to recognize poorly visible targets. Automatic target detection and recognition algorithms processing both IR and visible-band images have been investigated to draw the operator's attention to possible targets. The machine generated information display requirements are presented with the human factors engineering aspects of the user interface in this complex environment, with a view to establishing user trust in the automation. The paper concludes with a summary of achievements to date and steps to project completion.

Underwater laser image is seriously contaminated by speckle noise which is due to the coherent nature of the scattering phenomenon. In this paper, the authors propose an adaptive speckle suppression algorithm via the novel nonsubsampled contourlet transform. The statistical model for speckle noise is first analyzed to obtain a simple and tractable solution in a closed analytical form. Gaussian distribution for speckle noise and a general Gaussian distribution are adopted to model the statistics of contourlet coefficients in logarithmically transformed laser images. Then based on the maximizing the a posteriori estimation with the assumption that speckle noise is spatially correlated within a small window, we utilize a locally adaptive Bayesian processor whose parameters are obtained from the neighboring coefficients in highpass subbands. Experimental results show that comparing with classical wavelet method, the proposed algorithm shows a superior performance in suppressing the speckle noise and retaining geometrical structures of the image.

Based on the theory of clonal selection in immunology, by introducing Baldwin effect, an improved clonal selection algorithm, termed as Baldwin clonal selection algorithm (BCSA), is proposed to solve the optimal approximation of linear systems. For engineering computing, the novel algorithm adopts three operations to evolve and improve the population: clonal proliferation operation, Baldwinian learning operation and clonal selection operation. The experimental study on the optimal approximation of a stable linear system and an unstable one show that the approximate models searched by the new algorithm have better performance indices than those obtained by some existing algorithms including the differential evolution algorithm, multi-agent genetic algorithm and artificial immune response algorithm.
