Underwater laser image is seriously contaminated by speckle noise which is due to the coherent nature of the scattering phenomenon. In this paper, the authors propose an adaptive speckle suppression algorithm via the novel nonsubsampled contourlet transform. The statistical model for speckle noise is first analyzed to obtain a simple and tractable solution in a closed analytical form. Gaussian distribution for speckle noise and a general Gaussian distribution are adopted to model the statistics of contourlet coefficients in logarithmically transformed laser images. Then based on the maximizing the a posteriori estimation with the assumption that speckle noise is spatially correlated within a small window, we utilize a locally adaptive Bayesian processor whose parameters are obtained from the neighboring coefficients in highpass subbands. Experimental results show that comparing with classical wavelet method, the proposed algorithm shows a superior performance in suppressing the speckle noise and retaining geometrical structures of the image.

Based on the theory of clonal selection in immunology, by introducing Baldwin effect, an improved clonal selection algorithm, termed as Baldwin clonal selection algorithm (BCSA), is proposed to solve the optimal approximation of linear systems. For engineering computing, the novel algorithm adopts three operations to evolve and improve the population: clonal proliferation operation, Baldwinian learning operation and clonal selection operation. The experimental study on the optimal approximation of a stable linear system and an unstable one show that the approximate models searched by the new algorithm have better performance indices than those obtained by some existing algorithms including the differential evolution algorithm, multi-agent genetic algorithm and artificial immune response algorithm.

The real-time image forming in future, high-end synthetic aperture radar systems is an example of an application that puts new demands on computer architectures. The initial question is whether it is at all possible to meet the demands with state-of-the-art technology or foreseeable new technology. It is therefore crucial to understand the computational flow, with its associated memory, bandwidth and processing demands. In this paper we analyse the application in order to, primarily, understand the algorithms and identify the challenges they present on a basic architectural level. The processing in the radar system is characterized by working on huge data sets, having complex memory access patterns, and doing real-time compensations for flight path errors. We propose algorithm solutions and execution schemes in interplay with a two-level (coarse-grain/fine-grain) system parallelization approach, and we provide approximate models on which the demands are quantified. In particular, we consider the choice of method for the performance-intensive data interpolations. This choice presents a trade-off problem between computational performance and size of working memory. The results of this "upstream" study will serve as a basis for further, more detailed architecture studies. © 2007 IEEE.

Multi-Spectral Camera(MSC) is a main payload on the KOMPSAT-2 satellite to perform the earth remote sensing. The MSC instrument has one(l) channel for panchromatic imaging and four(4) channel for multi-spectral imaging covering the spectral range from 450nm to 900nm using TDI CCD Focal Plane Array (FPA). The instrument images the earth using a push-broom motion with a swath width of 15 km and a ground sample distance (GSD) of 1 in over the entire field of view (FOV) at altitude 685 Km. The instrument is designed to have an on-orbit operation duty cycle of 20% over the mission lifetime of 3 years with the functions of programmable gain/offset and on-board image data compression/storage. The compression method on KOMPSAT-2 MSC was selected and used to match EOS input rate and PDTS output data rate on MSC image data chain. At once the MSC performance was carefully handled to minimize any degradation so that it was analyzed and restored in KGS(KOMPSAT Ground Station) during LEOP and Cal./Val. (Calibration and Validation) phase. In this paper, on-orbit image data chain in MSC and image data processing on KGS including general MSC description is briefly described. The influences on image performance between on-board compression algorithms and between performance restoration methods in ground station are analyzed, and the relation between both methods is to be analyzed and discussed.

Recent FPGA chips, with their large capacity memory and reconfigurability potential, have opened new frontiers for rapid prototyping of embedded systems. With the advent of high density FPGAs it is now feasible to implement a high-performance VLIW processor core in an FPGA. We describe research results of enabling the DSP TMS320 C6201 model for real-time image processing applications, by exploiting FPGA technology. The goals are, firstly, to keep the flexibility of DSP in order to shorten the development cycle, and secondly, to use powerful available resources on FPGA to a maximum in order to increase real-time performance. We present a modular DSP C6201 VHDL model which contains only the bare minimum number of instruction sets, or modules, necessary for each target application. This allows an optimal implementation on the FPGA. Some common algorithms of image processing were created and validated on an FPGA VirtexiI-2000 multimedia board using the proposed application development cycle. Our results demonstrate that an algorithm can easily be, in an optimal manner, specified and then automatically converted to VHDL language and implemented on an FPGA device with system level software.

Positron emission tomography (PET) systems employ mixed-signal front-end to carry out relatively simple, and ad hoc, processing of the charge pulses generated upon event detection. To obtain, and maintain over time, proper calibrations of the mixed-signal circuitry for generating accurate event information is a challenging task due to the simplicity of the event processing, and the huge number of channels and multiplexing of the input signals found in modern PET systems. It is also difficult to modify or extend the event-processing technologies when needs arise because it would involve making changes to the circuitry. These limitations can be circumvented by applying digital signal-processing technologies for analyzing event pulses generated in PET. With digital technologies, optimized event-processing algorithms can be implemented and they can be modified or extended with ease when needed. The resulting PET data-acquisition (DAQ) system is easier to calibrate and maintain, can generate more accurate event information, and has better extendibility. In this paper, we present our work toward developing a scalable all-digital DAQ system for PET, built upon a personal-computer platform for reducing cost. We will present the overall architecture of this digital DAQ system, and describe our implementations of several components of the system.

The watershed transform is a well-established tool for image segmentation. However, watershed segmentation is often not effective for textural images. In this paper, we describe an improved watershed segmentation algorithm combined with texture features. The aim of this study is to improve the generalization of watershed techniques and to construct a well segmentation of textural images. The method includes two stages. The first stage is standard watershed algorithm. The second stage is processed by a clustering algorithm, fuzzy c-means (FCM). Watershed algorithm provides small homogenous patches which are merged by clustering algorithm based on texture features. The experimental results demonstrate that the combined algorithm is effective for textural image segmentation.

We propose a novel directional lifting-based block-set coding algorithm in this paper. Directional lifting wavelet transform based on region partition is firstly used to remove the correlation along the edges and reduce the amount of high-pass subband energy, then a new multi-symbol arithmetic coding based on residual classified context is exploited to code directional information. A context-based block-set partitioning method is proposed to code the directional transformed coefficients. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm for texture-rich images outperforms JPEG2000 by 1.6 dB. Especially, the new algorithm can obtain the PSNR gain which up to 0.4 dB, comparing with JPEG2000 (EBCOT) based on directional lifting transform.

Due to the influence of speckle in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image, statistical dependencies among neighboring pixels should be considered in SAR image segmentation. The spatially adaptive weighted possibilistic c-means (SAW-PCM) clustering algorithm is proposed in which spatial information is introduced into PCM approach to directly adjust the membership. The relationship between the neighboring pixels is described through Markov random fields (MRF). To preserve detail information in SAR images, the directional neighborhood system set is established. The selection of neighborhood systems is based on similarity measurement (SM) between wavelet energies of comprehensive result of steerable wavelet transform. Among the different neighborhood alternatives, the one with the highest SM value is chosen to compute the weight value. The experimental results on real SAR images demonstrate the merit of the proposed method, especially in the preservation of details within a SAR image.
